Flares found on beaches traced to N.Y. unit

OCEAN CITY, Md. — Air Force officials say they have figured out the source of the five military-grade flares that washed ashore in September in Ocean City and in Bethany Beach, Del.

Air Force Public Affairs Secretary Charles Gulick says the serial numbers on the munitions photographed by police were tracked to an Air National Guard unit based on Long Island, N.Y.

Officials say the munitions are called marine location markers and were used in training missions of the 106th Air Rescue Wing of the New York Air National Guard. The markers are not explosive, but do produce smoke.

Meanwhile, the origin of a phosphorous flare found washed up in Ocean City on Oct. 11 remains a mystery.
