Turkey and Morale Served Up at Benning
Turkey and Morale Served Up at Benning

Columbus Ledger-Enquirer

FORT BENNING, GA. - Thanksgiving came a day early to the Warrior Inn mess hall on Fort Benning, where about 600 Soldiers bellied up to heaping plates of turkey and dressing served with a smile by members of their chain of command.

Sgt. 1st Class Johnny Davis with the 14th Combat Support Hospital wasn't one of Wednesday's eager diners, but that didn't keep him from stopping in on the buzzing buffet.

"Actually I'm not eating because I'm not very hungry, but I wanted to come over and support the Soldiers, the single Soldiers, as they're eating their Thanksgiving dinner because most of them can't get the opportunity to go home."

Maj. Paul Labrador, head nurse for the emergency medical technician division of the 14th CSH, was one of the stranded Soldiers unable to travel home for Thanksgiving. So his unit, along with leadership from the 11th Engineer Battalion, 13th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion and the 92nd Military Police Battalion, served him the meal. And he said he was grateful for the comfort and camaraderie the bounty provided. Labrador said it was nice to enjoy a hearty holiday meal in the presence of his second family.

"I'm single and I couldn't get home this year, so this is Thanksgiving for me," Labrador said, shrugging.
