1969 was the year my son was born. I knew about the war, but things were relatively quiet in Kansas. Although I was very impressed with events at Kent State and photographs of Monks immolating themselves in front of the Pentagon.

4. My dad wore one of those til he died - had the name of his friend,
Lt Col James Metz, USAF.

Jim Metz was captured by the NVA and held in a prison camp for a time. He was seen there by several Americans. The war ended and decades went by and he never resurfaced. Then just a few years ago I heard on the news about some remains being returned to the US - Col Metz had finally come home to be buried.

They killed him in prison camp. My dad said Jim was the kind of guy who would NEVER cooperate, and NEVER talk, and I'm sure his strong defiance is what got him killed.

Sad, sad. My dad died in 1980 and never knew what became of his friend.

5. I didn't know this guy, but I have always thought about what Viet Nam
meant to many of my peers in the generation of the 60s. I can imagine what Dawson's life would have been.
