Taxis to cap some rates, use dollar-based fares

On-base taxis in Uijeongbu and Dongducheon will begin offering capped rates for certain rides and will begin using dollar-based fares on Dec. 3, according to AAFES officials.

The changes are meant to limit fares for certain rides that can grow expensive because of slow-moving traffic along bus routes, according to Ken Limtiaco, the Army and Air Force Exchange Services’ general manager north of Seoul.

Under the new system, the maximum fare for single-stop rides within camps Hovey and Casey, or between the two camps, will be $5, Limtiaco said. Maximum fares for single-stop rides within Camp Red Cloud or Camp Stanley will be $2.

“We are excited to give this to the customer,” Limtiaco said. “Actually, it’s not a bad deal.”

The on-base taxi company, Worldcup Arirang, agreed to the fare caps on certain routes in exchange for a slightly more expensive starting fee. Currently, the starting fare is 2,000 won, or about $2.15.

As of Dec. 3, the starting fare will be $2.50, except for the $2 rides within Camp Red Cloud and Camp Stanley in Uijeongbu, AAFES officials said. That initial charge will cover 1,700 meters or five minutes, whichever elapses first.
