Excuse me?
I am so sick of the pandering to the freaking christians in this country. The so called "debate" last night, wasn't just a joke, but it made me sick to my stomach.

Even at freaking DU, they pander to the religiously deluded.

Here's something I posted in another thread, and no, I won't say which one because I don't want to be accused of "calling someone out."

Please, educate me - exactly what part of this made it deletion worthy - yes, this post was alerted on and deleted.

Aren't I allowed my opinion? I do not understand why this was deleted. Please, someone tell me which DU rule I broke.

This is what I said

"Even here on DU, the christians think their religion matters more than anyone else's and it's OK to shove their values in everyone else's face.

They'll never get why it's so damned offensive to the rest of us.

Hell, they can't even wrap their heads around the idea that there are people who truly don't believe in their sky fairy. They think that people who aren't religionistas are "mad" at their sky fairy, therefore rejecting him.

Yeah, right.

I'm pretty resigned to the fact that they run this country, I just don't want their fantasies rubbed in my face or their belief that all discussion should be on their terms dominating this freaking election just like it has the rest.

And for those that say that it's just too bad, that's the way it is, get over it; the US is a country of christians --- yeah that's the same thing they said to Copernicus and Galileo as they killed them for daring to refute their dogma with fact and science. Maybe in another 2000 or 500 years they'll actually realize how silly their beliefs are.

I won't be holding my breath for it to happen."

1. The "sky fairy" did it
because while it's tolerated here where we're all nicely bitter and cynical about religion, it's considered flame bait on a mixed board of believers and unbelievers.

Had you used the small "g" god, the post would have stayed.

2. Probably the way you phrased your opinion.
It is hostile and aggressive. Not saying there isn't good reason, so don't go there, please - I'm just trying to see how it might be perceived by others.

"sky fairy" is a slur for a believer, and I imagine some of them put it in the same category as using a racial slur.

"religionista" is offensive to them as well - hell, "fundy" gets their knickers in a twist.

What probably pushed your post over the edge was getting your history wrong - neither Copernicus or Galileo were killed by the church. Galileo was forced to recant and was placed under house arrest for the remainder of his life (sucks, but he died a natural death at 72 - nine years later). Copernicus was never tried at all and died, seeing his life's work in published form. There was a Copernican scientist who was convicted of heresy and burned at the stake - Bruno - but not these guys.

Nobody likes it when their group is accused of killing people, and accusing them of something that didn't happen really pisses them off.

What I'm trying to say is that your post came across as angry and rude, which no doubt caused some others to tell the mods you were being abusive. I know it's frustrating, but in an environment like DU, you do yourself no favours using language designed to provoke and flinging accusations around that have no basis in fact.

You may not want to "catch more flies with honey" but it was the "vinegar" of your post that got it deleted - in my humble opinion. :)

3. Here's your problem, right here....
Edited on Sun Aug-17-08 06:16 PM by JNelson6563
You stated painful truths to the (varying degrees of) zealots among us. While I know a lot of believers don't care one wit what others believe many do and take offense at the slightest inference that what they believe is untrue. Going beyond simply "untrue" into "fantasy", "sky fairy" and "silly" territory is worthy of anything from shunning, alerting or, with an especially excitable bunch, stoning.

:toast: Keep the faith, as it were. heh

5. As are most of us.
Ironically, I think if HRC had won the nomination, religion wouldn't have been such a big issue. It certainly would have come up but not to the extent it seems to for Obama. A lot of believers want Obama has to somehow prove his faith and that he's not an Atheist or Muslim or a radical Black Xian. Unfortunately, it doesn't work out all that well.

I think we all expected this to happen to some extent. And I expect religion will rear it's ugly head again in the debates as well.

6. As am I...
my father was visiting last month, and I took him out to dinner. He is a smart man like me, but a lot wiser due to experience and even-temper. Plus, I felt he might give me a more unbiased answer than the one i had formed- he is more of a spiritual guy as opposed to my strong atheist belief. I asked him "Does it seem to you that religion is really 'up in your face' compared to 20 years ago?" I mean, I remember when people, when pressed, might tell you what church they went to, but that was about it. He concurred with that.

When I saw this forum between the candidates announced, I had a sinking feeling in my gut. Why does this subject have to keep coming up? We are (at least were) a secular country- Obama should not have gone to it. One day someone will have to stand up and say "My religion (or lack thereof) is no ones business but mine. Judge me on my past actions, not what I claim to be"

7. I couldn't and wouldn't watch it.
It would be like watching a room full of
people seriously discussing the existence
of Santa Claus.

Except there is more evidence of St. Nickolaus's
existence.

It's all palaver to me.

Go ahead and talk about morality, but
PLEASE, morality is NOT exclusive to religion.
