*sigh* my online chronic illness support group is infested with fundies!
Including the science knowledgable owner! I knew there were a lot of bible thumpers but a discussion of stem cell research really pissed me off...the owner claimed that embryonic research CHEAPENS human life! :wtf: Don't tell me that valuing the "life" of cells in a dish over the suffering of adults is NOT cheapening human life! AND then the justifications between pro and con were made by quoting bible verses at each other! WHY THE FUCK does science have to have religion thrust into it? And as for the people who were whining about not wanting their tax dollars involved in "immoral research"...what about us atheists having to put up with our tax dollars supporting faith based initiatives or having to have things banned for "moral reasons" when we don't have the same moral code? GRRR..The whole unethical scientist mantra there really pissed me off..I've had to stop reading just cause its not good for my blood pressure...:banghead:

1. Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and saviour?

I'm sorry to hear that, Sue, I grok.

Boy do I grok.

At lease we have two safe houses at DU.

2. Why are they even there?
If god is so great then why do they have chronic illnesses in the first place?

Unethical scientists my ass. Try unethical religious twits barring you from getting the health care you need and deserve because of what their imaginary friends said. :grr:

9. Well considering someone made the analogy
of embryos to ACORNS as in the potential to grow big and beautiful, that won't work. I so wanted to say "for ffs, lady, you do know that most acorns get consumed by other animals and only a small fraction actally grow up to be trees.."

11. Which bit is the soul?
If a fertilised egg has a soul, what happens when it divides? Do you get two souls, then four, then eight etc? Or is it one soul shared among all the cells? What happens with identical twins? If I lose weight, will I have less soul? When I take a dump, am I flushing soul away, and should there be some kind of religious ceremony for that? I'm probably having a haircut this weekend, and now I'm getting worried about what the barber might do with the hair he cuts off.

12. You've got it backwards.
If you accept the premise that a soul is a supernatural substance imbued into humans in discrete amounts at the moment of conception, then a fertilized egg has one soul.

When it divides in two, each part has half a soul, then quarters, then eighths, and so on.

You should also accept the premise that since when a person dies, their soul is released or judged or some other nonsense. If the soul divides into increasingly small parts as cells divide, so too do those small parts of the soul get released or whatever it is that happens with the soul when its host vessel dies.

The amount of your soul you have at any given moment can be determined by the following equation:
S=(1/c)*x

S represents the percentage of your original soul remaining, c represents the total number of unique cells your body has ever had and x is the number of unique cells that have never died since the moment of conception.

That's why fertilized eggs are more sacred then newborn babies--they have their entire soul and babies have trillions of diluted pieces of it that die daily.

6. I dropped out of those things only partially because of the fundies
trying to push their gods into every sentence. The other part was that too many people I liked were dying. It was bad for my blood pressure and my head.

8. Have you searched around for a reality based group?
And did you see Monday's Daily Show regarding stem cells? All the repukes of course said we're going to have "fetus farms." Stewart said "And those elitist liberals are going to want organic free range fetuses."

14. Stem Cell research is the next step up in fighting dieases...
Those thumpers do not want to see any cures for any illnesses, religion benefits from people who suffer. Without suffering, what use is religion? It is worthless as it is, but when no one is suffering they are not seeking the aide of the invisible man in the sky which a lot of people do when faced with a major illness or tragedy.

And yes, cells in a petri-dish are just cells. Those same people do not say anything about those cells that are tossed out daily from fertility clinics...Those people would be happy living in the dark ages, they are obstructionist upon progress.

16. Sorry to hear that..
You'd think an illness support group would be free of that sort of self-righteousness about the evils of medical research.

Most pre-implantation embryos don't survive to birth, and most medical definitions of conception include implantation as well as fertilization - so it's ambiguous whether these embryos are truly 'conceived' anyway.

...who entered the site and then insulted the newcomers if they didn't accept "the only true savior"
