The news so far...

Star Trek XI Casting Updates: Yelchin is Chekov, Quinto is Spock
August 8, 2007
Source: Hollywood Reporter
by Alex Billington

Announced a couple weeks back at the San Diego Comic-Con was the news that "Heroes" star Zach Quinto had been cast as Spock in the upcoming Star Trek XI. The film, to be directed by one of Hollywood's hottest at the moment - J.J. Abrams - is quickly building massive amounts of buzz far out from its December 2008 release. Today's announcement is another important casting one: 18 year old Anton Yelchin will play Russian crew member Pavel Chekov.

Although plot details are still being kept secret, Chekov is the Russian-born navigator of the USS Enterprise. Yelchin himself is Russian born as well, although his performances have always been very American. The story line of Star Trek XI chronicles the early years of the Enterprise crew during their time at Starfleet Academy, hence why the younger actors are being chosen for the roles.

Star Trek Casting: Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and Eric Bana as the Villain
October 10, 2007

Finally some major updates in regards to the casting on J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Trek XI. Eric Bana as the movie's villain named Nero has been confirmed, but the casting on Captain Kirk has not. Reports state that Chris Pine (Just My Luck, Smokin’ Aces) is "in talks" to star as Captain Kirk, but scheduling conflicts mean he's not confirmed. Paramount and Abrams are set on Pine, but he's got to choose between Star Trek or White Jazz. What does the line-up on the bridge of the USS Enterprise look like now?

Out of the primary cast aboard the Enterprise, we're still missing Bones, Scotty, and Sulu. It's starting to come together and damn is it starting to look good. Early on Matt Damon was rumored to be cast as Kirk, but obviously that was just a big rumor. Although Abrams had for a long time expressed interest in casting a major star in the role, it looks like Chris Pine is who he ended up with.

NO WAY! Simon Pegg is Scotty in Star Trek!!
October 11, 2007

I hate to keep bringing up person-by-person casting on J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek XI due out next year, but this time it's a must. Yesterday, Captain Kirk and the film's villain were cast, and today we add another big one. Simon Pegg will star as Montgomery "Scotty" Scott!! I just can't believe it, but Variety has confirmed it! The same Simon Pegg who starred in Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz will now become Scotty on the USS Enterprise.

Today isn't April Fool's Day is it? I'm still blown away, I would have thought out of everyone, Simon Pegg would be the last one to show up in Star Trek. Not that he can't handle the role and do a fantastic job, but his name never ever crossed my mind! I must proclaim that I believe Simon Pegg as Scotty will be one of the greatest additions to the movie.
