Stargate Universe coming this summer.
Edited on Sun Dec-28-08 04:04 AM by Touchdown
Universe will attempt to appeal to a broader audience, drawing new viewers into the Stargate world. The show will be "a little more character-based, a little less rooted in a sci-fi mythology," co-creator Brad Wright told GateWorld. "It really does come down to characters and stories that are engaging, and that people want to see -- that they feel like they haven't seen before."

Stargate Universe is set on board a massive Ancient ship called the Destiny, millions of years older than even the city of Atlantis (story). The Ancients launched the automated ship millions of years ago to seed Stargates throughout many galaxies, with a second ship planned to follow it up and explore those planets. But they got busy with ascension, and never followed through on the plan.

Earth discovers that the Stargate's mysterious ninth chevron can be utilized to gate directly to the Ancient ship, opening up literally the whole universe to explore. But the team will soon discover that they have no way back to Earth, and must ride the ship on its programmed course.

actor Robert Carlyle will star as Dr. David Rush in the next Stargate television series, MGM and the SCI FI Channel announced today.

Stargate Universe is currently in pre-production, created by Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis producers Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper. The show begins filming in February and will premiere with a 2-hour event next summer.

Among Carlyle's most notable films are "Trainspotting," "The Full Monty," "Eragon," and the horror flick "28 Weeks Later." He played Adolf Hitler in the TV biopic "Hitler: The Rise of Evil," and appeared in the Bond film "The World Is Not Enough." Most recently, he starred as Carl Benton opposite Kiefer Sutherland in the TV movie 24: Redemption.

1. I've seen this before. It was called Star Trek: Voyager
Or was it 'Lost In Space?'

2. Well let's hope they don't get bogged down with Species 8472.
Never really was impressed with either show. DS9 and B5 were alike, but both were very good shows. So there's hope.

3. I just hope its watchable.
Some of the stuff Atlantis has been doing in the final season has been boring as hell. I want to see some really origional ideas for alien races. I'm tired of find humans everywhere or humanoid aliens that speak english.

4. The Wraith were never that good. They de-fanged vampires.
They've got razor sharp teeth, and the feed from the palm of their hands?:wtf: There was none of the mystique, sexual intrigue or quiet menace that makes vampires a good villain. They were just an army of feeders. Too bad, because SG was usually good at bad guys.

I never really got into the wraith. The Genii were good though.

The Ori on the other hand. Nothing more evil than unquestioning religious fanaticism. They were the best villain.
The Goa'uld were in a close second. Who doesn't have a goa'uld sitting in the corner office insisting on worship from the cube rats just outside?

Humans everywhere is basically the premise of the show. The ancients were humans. They created the stargate system to colonize the galaxy, and eventually Pegasus Galaxy. So all these worlds they visit with stargates on them would logically have humans who's ancestors colonized the planet thousands of years ago. Also, the go'auld helped a little bit by importing human slaves to their worlds, using stargates they stole from other planets.

English speaking aliens are a staple of Star Trek, despite the simple cop-out plot device of the universal translator. I don't see it going away any time soon. Of course it could be like Star Wars, where english speaking humans understand every grunt and moan of wookies as well as the geezbahs of the jawas, and the dobo dobos of the ewoks, but speak english back.;)

5. I'll watch it as I am a fan of the whole franchise.
I'm also not so critical and likely "easily" entertained, so long as the acting and the script is good. Never could get into Farscape, Firefly or Heroes for those very reasons, and I did try.

As for this being like either Lost in Space or Voyager, one major difference: those shows had ships the humans were familiar with. In this one, they're going to have to find some way of generating food pretty quickly, or it will be a short voyage for them ;)
