Carnivale is back, and soon Deadwood will be!
Carnivale returns Sunday, January 9th, to HBO. The DVDs for the first season are out, I've got them on the way from Netflix to catch up on this wonderful series.

Season 2 of Deadwood starts March 6th. They're currently rerunning Season 1.

That's another great, great series. And yes, folks back then really did talk like that.

Notice how everyone has a different way of speaking. How Swearingen (possibly the coolest villain ever) has a different way of speaking to different people. It's all beautifully done, but some people have trouble with the language.

It's just words, folks. Can't hurt ya.

1. I just discovered Carnivale
midway through, so I am having a little trouble figuring things out.

I LOVE Deadwood. I grew on me. At first I didn't like the violence, but after prodding from hubby, I made it a point to watch.

2. Rent the DVDs
Or, alternatively, you could read the episode recaps at HBO.com or Television Without Pity.

4. I taped all of the first episodes.

I was going to buy the DVD...still might, although it would be a needless expense. I have On-Demand and made the tapes a few days ago. I also now have the DVR, and saved the Episode 13.

Obviously, I lived for the Second Season......

Last night was great, a good warm-up for what I hear is going to be a vicious race between Justin and Ben.

Who here thinks Iris is way too kinky??????

Here is Season 2 Trailor:

5. I scheduled all my meetings for Monday morning
So I'd have an excuse to be in a hotel Sunday night for Carnivale. Also Deadwood. Made being out of town less painful (don't have cable, much less HBO, at home)

I have to watch each episode of carnivale several times to connect the dots...and then I'm still pondering!

7. We've ordered the DVDs from Netflix
And are watching them all again, before we watch this season. So I'm taping this season off as it runs (our DVR is screwing up AGAIN, so it may be replaced again).

8. Here is a bit of what I've pieced together......
Just one of the interesting spokes on the Carnivale Ferris Wheel:

Justin and Iris's mother is the sister of Management. Management is the Russian solidier......last name Belyakov.

<snip>

http://www.hbo.com/carnivale/episode/season2/episode13.shtml

Back in the trailer Management explains the vision. "A weapon," he says. "A false sun wrought by the hands of men." To stop it, Ben must destroy the preacher he sees in his dreams, find Scudder and bring him to Management. "What is he to you?" Ben asks. "He is to me what the preacher is to you," the voice replies. Management then explains that his own name is Lucius Belyakov, and that he is the Russian soldier Ben has seen mauled in his foxhole dream.

The information is too much for Ben and he takes off. "You can't run from this--millions will die!" Belyakov calls out, in futility. "Run you coward, run as your father did!"

<snip>
Iris Crowe - Brother Justin's older sister, she cared for him after the death of their mother, Plemina Belyakov, in a train crash in the California Sierras. Though her brother had long since forgotten about his strange powers, she alone kept his secret, fervently praying for the day when the Lord would make His wishes known. With the onset of Justin's visions, she takes action, ruthlessly pursuing what she sees as her brother's divine destiny. Intensely loyal, fiercely protective, she sees her station in life as one of service and devotion to Justin.

Scudder and Lodz met in the war in Russia.....that was Lodz dancing bear that got shot. They toured together then came to America.

Management was hunting Scudder in the war.

<snip>

Professor Ernst Lodz - While searching for his dancing bear, Bruno, Lodz discovered an American expatriate, Henry Scudder, wandering in a Lemberg battlefield. Tragically, the bear was shot by a Russian officer. However, saving Scudder turned out to be fortuitous for Lodz when he became aware of the American's uncanny powers. Besides incipient psychokinesis, Scudder could read minds, divine the past and future from touching objects. The two traveled together, performing for the wealthy in European salons from Belgrade to Paris.

Aware that the Russian was still pursuing him, Scudder decided to leave the act. Lodz tried to stop him, coveting a fraction of his partner's power. Scudder fulfilled Lodz's wish, gifting him with psychic power while exacting a terrible price: Lodz's sight. Bitter, Lodz has pursued Scudder ever since-at first alone, then in league with Management, a pursuit he will continue even beyond death itself...

13. Not their uncle - their father.
Edited on Sat Jan-15-05 10:13 PM by robbedvoter
I also think Sophie is Ben's sister. It was when realizing the consequences of her being Scudder's daughter that Apolonia decided to kill her (by setting the fire). So, we have 2 sets of brothers and sisters - the Carnivale one - unaware of it all.

15. I've heard others think that the Russian is the father.
The more I ponder, the more it seems likely for the exception that Management does not know the name minister/preacher.....yet....they changed their name when they were cared for by Norman.

I think Sophie is Ben's half sister too. Things run in pairs.....it makes sense.....

9. Deadwood is fascinating
I'll have to NetFlix Carnivale because I fell out early on...even though it was good. Just can't fit everything in. But Deadwood...enthralling.
The problem is, I start talking like Swearingen.

10. Deadwood is my second choice.
Maybe even equal but different. I'm coping the episodes as well. These are re-runs that always bare fruit....always something one missed or brings clarity on the story....especially with Carnivale.

17. Jonesy and Sophie have a long history
he helped raise her, then fell in love with her. She was confused, pushed him away, he ended up sleeping with Rita Sue, Sophie found out.

For revenge, Sophie set him up to "catch" her and Libby making out, telling him that's how it feels to be betrayed.

The first season is out on DVD, I highly recommend renting it to catch up on all this.

18. Sophie was also hurt by Libby.
Libby knew about the affair and didn't tell Sophie. A true friend would of found a way regardless if it was her mother involved with Jonesy.

20. Libby was not exactly aiming for friendship. And now she's putting
the moves on Jonesy. The way she was raised, she can only express herself in one language.

I find Stumpy the most hard to understand character on the show. I know that's the way these things were done, but I can't conceive of acting as a pimp for my daughters and wife.

19. Did anyone read the Episode 14 synopsis?
At the end.....

Brother Justin is finishing a long night of his own in Chinatown. As a woman crawls off of his back, he walks, gingerly, to the mirror. The woman helps him slide out of his robe to see his reflection, and her handiwork. Covering his body is a massive tattoo. The gnarled and bare limbs of a tree. Brother Justin is the tattooed man.

22. Really - I liked it
The story is moving along. This series is not meant to last 5 years. Daniel Knauf indicated the series is beign written to wrap it up this season if HBO does not order it again by mid-season, or to wrap it up next season. It is not getting great ratings, so HBO may pull the plug this year, so Knauf is directign the story in such a way as to end it if he needs to.

I can't wait to see how Ben reacts to his family members. The Crone scares the hell out of me.
