The Repubs lost their nerve. What, if I understand correctly, is why that bit was included in the bill in the first place, for the Republicans to show off their new political clout ie "because we can, that's why".

But they couldn't go through with it. Kerry and Boxer et al must be happy as hell!

1. I did not hear, thank you so much
That's terrific. But they are going to use it as a campaign issue next year. Your gas prices are high because we can't drill in Alaska. *sigh*

…removing the Arctic oil drilling provision could incite a backlash from lawmakers who strongly favor it, which is a big majority of Republicans. House and Senate GOP leaders are likely to push hard to get the ANWR proposal back into the bill in negotiations on a final document.

Marnie Funk, a spokeswoman for Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., said that Domenici considers the ANWR provision, which the Senate approved, “one of the most critical components” in the budget package. “He is committed to coming back to the Senate from the conference with ANWR intact,” she said.

5. We have to just keep haunting them without cease.
A lot of Republicans are starting to worry about re-elections. Drilling in ANWR is very unpopular with most Americans.

6. They knew that the Bill would not pass in the house without

that.

This is why they did it, unfortunately. Now we can be sure that the Bill will pass.

And KG is right, this is not the end of it, unfortunately. They will try again (may be in conference, who knows).

7. While not the end of it, it may be getting harder to pass
2006 is on the horizon and Bush is losing popularity by the moment - but they never give up.

8. Stevens wants this real bad. He will move heaven and earth
to get it put back in the bill in conference. The Rethugs in the House will weasel together something Orwellian that makes it look like House Rethugs are voting against it while they actually vote for it.

Even so, this is far from over. Congressional approval of drilling in ANWR is step 1 or 2 in about a 10 step process that would end up with the actual drilling. I hope the House bastards keep it out, but I'm not holding my breath.
