Seven Deadly Sins/Blessed Virtues
Edited on Mon Feb-13-06 10:55 PM by YOY
You know, part of the fun thing about being Catholic (other than being REALLY FREAKED OUT more-so than other folks when watching The Exorcist and having your mere existance piss off fundie born-agains) is our large amount of downright medieval beliefs and the ultra-intricate set of beliefs that the church has accumulated over 2 thousand years.

So I was taking a look at the Seven deadly sins and their more happy-go-lucky counterparts. You know some of these really aren't sins and some of the virtues are...well completely forgotten by so many 'good Christians' of all denominations. I would like to ask other DUers their thoughts on the two sets of seven and their perceived relevance in today's world.

Sin: Covetousness: yes greedy people do stink. I must concur.
Virtue: Liberality : QUICK SHOW BILL O'REILEY! WE'RE VIRTUOUS! HOLY SHEEP ON A CRUMB CRACKER!

Sin:Lust: Well, what is lust? Unnecessary carnal attention? A little lust can add some spark in your life! Acting on it to the detriment of one's personal relations with loved ones and physical/mental health dangers are also there.
Virtue:Chastity: Yes, but all chastity and no more human race. Only works good in small doses. So what did the Catholic Church ever have against sex in the first place? Anyone know?

Sin:Anger: Mean people do suck I must concur. I loved Dante's punishment for them...fiction can be entertaining at times.
Virtue:Meekness: Yes, but meekness can also be indecisive IMHO. Decisiveness is necessary in a world that leave the indecisive behind.

Sin:Gluttony: Yes, but some people have type 1 Diabetes and glandular problems. Yes, we know that society can be downright cruel to the overweight.
Virtue:Temperance: Yes, Temperance is a good thing most of the time for me.

Sin:Envy: The real root of all evil and the worst one in my opinion.
Virtue:Brotherly love: The one true way and the best counter to evil!

Sin:Sloth: Yes, but this could be a bought of depression or a chemical imbalance. Some people are also just lazy too.
Virtue:Diligence: Yes, but nobody likes a "busy body"

Sin:Pride Yeah, but too little and you've got low self esteem.
Virtue:Humility : Yeah, but too much and your voice is never heard.

So fellow Catholic and Orthodox DUers. What are your thoughts on the two sets of seven?
