Yay! I have my greenhouse!
You may remember that HullBoss took out my old compost bin and built a new and improved one over by the rhubarb and that he planned to build us a greenhouse where the old bin had been. Well, I'm happy to report that the greenhouse is almost finished. All that's left is to build the planting boxes inside, pave the walkway in between them and put up some shelves. It's small, about 5' x 8', but I think we'll be able to get some good tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and other things that are hard to grow outside here.

This is where one of the beds will be. It will be as deep as the top wood strip.

We'll continue with the brick pavers down the middle. I plan to have two big pots against the back wall in the middle. Also there will be shelves on the back wall, and I will also be able to hang baskets from the rafters. I think we'll be able to make real good use of this space. Now I can't wait for spring. :)

1. just in time for winter
Do you plan to heat it? I admire anybody that can build practical things like this. It looks great. Definitely looks like fall there. I saw an Alaska license plate down here in Redneck Riviera, and thought about you.

2. No, it won't get any use through the winter,

but it will extend our growing season by a month or two, plus the extra warmth in the summer will be good for growing the tomatoes and such. I've had success growing tomatoes and cucumbers under clear plastic tents, but this is SO much better. I'm really excited.

My plan is to start seedlings out there in April or so. Since the frost and snow won't be able to touch them, they should do fine, especially cabbage and the cool weather things. I also want to start some annuals in flats -- we always end up spending so much money on flowers each spring. It'll all be kind of experimental at first, but I'm sure it's going to be wonderful.

My husband is a very handy man. :)

And, yes, it's very fallish here. Our thermometers say it's about 35 this morning. I don't think we've had a good frost yet, but the beans and things are definitely done. I still have the kale and carrots to harvest -- everything else is pretty well finished.

3. THIRTY - FIVE DEGREES ???? My hands shake just
typing it.
That's not any FALL I know, that's WINTER.

Seriously.
I am thrilled about your greenhouse, your very handy husband, your excitement.
I garden just enough to understand what you are planning.
What fun!
Congratulations, and thanks again for the shot of the gorgeous redhead.

4. It's warmed up to 45 now.
You can stop shaking.

This is pretty standard temperture for this time of year here. It's going to get a lot colder before it gets warmer. :)

5. Do you have to worry about air ciculation or ventilation when you use it?
And how do those fiberglass???? panels fare in the winter? No freezing or cracking?

I have had a few greenhouses, which is why I ask.

6. There's a screen on the bottom of the door

so all we'll have to do is raise the glass, or, of course, we can leave the door open, which I'll do once the flowers appear so that the pollinators can come in. Plus there's ventilation out of the top under the little roof cap thingy. This particular fiberglass is supposed to be good to 30 below, so we'll see how it holds up. It doesn't usually get any colder than that here (except for last year), so we should be okay. The angle of the roof should prevent any snow buildup, hopefully.

As I said, it's all experimental, but it sure beats those tents I used to build with the heavy visqueen. We do some desperate things up here for homegrown tomatoes.
