***Submission Guidelines and Instructions for Calendar 2011***
Submissions are now open!

1. The theme for the 2011 calendar is "Architecture". Please submit your most interesting, dynamic, technically wonderful, compelling photographs.

2. Photographs must be horizontal, measuring 7.5"x10", with a dpi of 200-300 or higher (preferably a dpi of 300). If the submission does not meet these requirements, it will not be included in judging.

3. After judging, the 12 highest scored photographs will be included in the calendar. If one photographer happens to have more than one photograph in the top twelve ratings, then the highest rated photograph will be selected, and the next highest rated photograph, by a photographer who is not yet included (ex. if the top photos are rated numbers 1-12, then 13 would take the place of the repeated photographer's photo) will be inserted. In the case of a tie in the ratings, I will send those back to be re-judged, and the highest rated photo will be used.

As always, I will personally chose the cover photo from the submissions.

4. Please think carefully about your title. This, along with your DU screenname, will be published in the calendar.

5. By submitting, a contestant is giving permission for his/her photograph to be published in a calendar as a donation that will be sold as a fundraiser for Democratic Underground and could be used in advertising for the Democratic Underground calendar in the future. All other rights revert to the photographer. All other standard contest rules apply (please see below).

6. To submit for the calendar, please send your print-ready photographs to duphotocalendar@gmail.com. Please include the phrase “DU calendar” along with the title and DU name of the photographer in the subject line of the email. Please put the title of the photo (or a clear shortened version) in the name of the photo file. Contestants may submit up to 4 photographs. Any additional photographs will be discarded unless they are being substituted for a previous submission, in which case, there must be discussion with the contest coordinator (that would be me) in advance of the substitution.

Submissions will be open until Tuesday, July 13, 2010 7:00pm EST.

BASIC CONTEST/CHALLENGE RULES:

CONTEST LICENSE:

An entrant to this contest, by submitting a photograph, is giving permission for that photograph to be copied to Demopedia and/or to a linked Gallery that will display the photographs entered for this contest for the purpose of publicizing future contests and/or commemorating current and past contests. The entrant retains all other rights to the photograph being submitted. Neither Demopedia and/or a linked Gallery may use any photograph submitted for any purpose other than to display the photograph being submitted by the entrant, and neither gains any real or implied ownership rights to the photograph.

An entrant can disclaim this Contest License and retain all rights to the photograph. If an entrant wishes to disclaim the Contest License they must include the following statement in the post containing their photograph; "I disclaim the Contest License, and reserve all rights to my photograph" Any photograph submitted by an entrant with this disclaimer statement will not be copied and displayed in Demopedia and/or any linked Gallery.

If you have any questions, concerns, or if I've left anything out, please do not hesitate to ask them here or PM me.

I can't wait to see what you have come up with!

2. The maximum this year is 4 photos
I know that's a lot fewer than in the past, but it was getting truly unmanageable, and this year I'm in grad school and have tons of friends getting married, so I just can't commit the same time. Sorry.

On the plus side, I have a documentary photography class this fall, so I will hopefully have more photos to share! :-)

3. OK, I'll admit I'm the dummy here
How does 7.5"x10" translate into pixels? That's my only choice on Photobucket.

5. Depends on the DPI
Edited on Tue Jun-22-10 10:02 PM by HappyCynic
Multiply the DPI by the inches.
So, 7.5" x 10" at 300 dpi:
7.5" x 300 dpi = 2250 pixels
10" x 300 dpi = 3000 pixels

7.5" x 240 dpi = 1800 pixels
10" x 240 dpi = 2400 pixels

You can usually change the dpi a photo is saved at by opening up your image program (photoshop, irfanview, etc.) and resizing the image. If the program has an option to change the stored dpi, it'll usually be in the image resize options.

4. I have to say...
Edited on Tue Jun-22-10 08:49 PM by Cassandra
that horizontal is a problem for me with architecture shots. Most of my good shots are vertical (given I'm in NYC). I'll do my best.
Will architectural details be ok?

6. absolutely!
I generally have a very loose interpretation of themes. As long as it can be defended in some way, then I'm good with it.

15. I have a comment about the contest license.
You should probably take the reference to Demopedia out, since there hasn't been a Demopedia since at least 2006, maybe earlier. Newer DUers are probably all "WTF is Demopedia?" when they read these rules. The bit about the linked gallery was from that same era. First we put winning contest photos us on Demopedia and when Demopedia folded, F.Gordon hosted the winning contest photos. Since neither F.Gordon nor Demopedia are with us any longer, and no one is hosting contest photos any longer, you could probably get rid of that whole section.

17. you're probably right
Truthfully, after the long discussion about rules in the past few months, I just didn't want to change anything in case it caused concern.

It gets exhausting having the same discussions year after year with different players. But necessary for the democratic process. So... whenever you get around to it, you know what corner I'm in. :hi:

29. I've been in a holding pattern with DU and with photography for a while.
I salivated at the theme, mostly for the idea of going out and getting something new. Then the G20 and a nice flurry of work intervened, and here we are. Archives forever!

33. Submissions are now closed!
Well, I asked for submissions and you gave me submissions!

I will be going through and sorting them for the polls in the next couple of weeks - if there are any problems with any of the submissions, I will let the photographer know, so hopefully we can fix them. Look for contest polls in the first week or two of August.
