Cool digital camera website...
http://megamyth.homestead.com/imageres.html

I've obviously been enlightened on some things, particularly the PPI issue (some pros say 300ppi but 200ppi, after checking, is the valid figure) And shocked at just how well a 1.5MP camera can do... that 7mp camera people drool over now seems to be a ripoff, unless they're keen to crop, but 7mp has other advantages too...

1. Well, whether 7 megapixel (or higher) is a rip off depends entirely

on what you want to do with your images.

If you are using your images strictly for web display or small prints, you might be able to get by with 3 megapixel or less. If you plan on making large prints you should plan on a higher resolution camera as well.

Note that the article was written in March 2000. A lot has changed in the ensuing time period.

Also, his premise is wrong in many cases. For instance, my 6 megapixel Nikon produces images that are 3008 x 2000 pixels. That is a total of 6016000 which is to say, over 6 million pixels (i.e. 6 megapixels). Each of these pixels is comprised of red, green and blue elements (much as they are on a typical computer screen), combined in various degrees to represent the color actually being photographed.
