"Marianna "Tee Design
Edited on Mon Apr-20-09 06:40 PM by AllenVanAllen
Hello Everybody,

I wanted to share a design I entered in a t-shirt design derby with an ocean theme. I don't know if any of you have tried T-shirt design but it's freakin' hard! I was limited to 6 colors and no half-tones or gradients on this design.
This design was inspired by classic 50's pin-up art. I love the ocean and everything about it so It was kinda' hard to come with an idea and then the song "Mermaids" by Flight of the Conchords popped into my head.

Thanks for looking!

1. Well, you've got a friend in me.
:hi: I LOVE mermaids. And yours is quite lovely. I find a lot of mermaid art do not show the slight demarcation in the legs, as yours does. I don't know why that makes a difference in my appreciation of the art. I just like that bit of detail. Definitely retro without being too nostalgic. I could buy that bracelet if it were real. Very nice.
Hey, if you'd like, check out some of my girls (and guys) I posted months ago at http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=282x1888. I'm not a good photographer but they came out as sharp as could get 'em.
I'll post as an OP a mermom I'm working on now.

2. Thank you friend!
I really appreciate the compliments on my T design! I'm very new finishing 2-D art in the computer, but I'm learning!
It's funny you mentioned the bracelet. I have a another design I'm working on that has a figure with the same style bracelets. I just copied the design for this one!

Wow! You've done some really beautiful work! Working in watercolors scares me! Do you have a website?

6. That's cool including an item
from one work to another, so symbolic. Wow! Blows me away your piece is created in 2-D through computer. I couldn't tell because it looks very much like traditional work.

Thanks for the compliment! Actually, only the red mermaid is in watercolor, the others are in pastel. I still have a site that's in desperate need of revamping. Though I know exactly how I want it, I think I'm just gonna break down and have someone do it for me. It's just too hard and time consuming working, finding time to paint and learning web codes. Ugh!

4. I love mermaids, so there's no way I can't like this.
I used to do screenprinting so I've designed quite a few shirts for people. I hardly ever work in color with my own art, so the color limitations never even affected me. Usually it was simple 2 color designs, but we got up to 5 and 6 a few times. I found that the more colors there were the harder the print job was, and as I was the one printing them I didn't want to give myself extra work. And most people didn't want to pay the big bucks for a multi-color design anyways. We charged less to make a design than most screenprinters would, but we still charged good money to create a design for someone from scratch.

The highlight of that job was meeting Joe Kennedy, who is very cool. Bill Cosby came in for a Cape Cod sweatshirt before a show at the Cape Cod Melody tent (which was 2 minutes away), but I had that day off. I would have asked him to do his Chicken Heart routine. :)

I got into tee design for fun and to try and hone my design skills. There's an entire sub-culture of tee consumers and many really talented illustrators. The competition is fierce! It's amazing to see some of the designs that win and wonder, how ever will they pint that on a shirt and make it look right?

Here are three of the outfits I like:

Threadless:

shirt woot:

I've yet to have any of my designs made into shirts but I'm very green. I may do it myself once my skills have progressed.
Thanks for checking it out!

7. These stuck out for me.

And about half a million on that last link were cool, so I won't post them all. :)
