He's been pretty sick the last few years. He had a liver transplant a few years ago. Then, a couple of years ago, he came to the states to the hospital in Florida where had had the transplant to have a colonoscopy and was in a bad car accident on his way to the drugstore to get the prep stuff for the colonoscopy.

He was in the hospital for a long time before he finally went back to Israel.

So, the last few years haven't been good for him. He had part of his bowel removed last month, and today he went back in to have more surgery done, and he developed a blood clot in his lung, which killed him.

He just turned 54 last month.

We weren't very close -- I feel like I barely knew him. He went away to school from the 9th grade on and has lived in Israel since shortly after he got married, so I didn't see him very often and we didn't have much in common. He was extremely religious and me -- not so much.

Even so, he's still family. And surgery is always risky. My condolences to your family. (will you be going to Israel?)

My parents will be leaving for Israel tomorrow for a couple of weeks. My mother asked me what I was going to do -- I said, what do you mean? She asked me if I'm going to sit shiva. I just don't see doing it here by myself. Just doesn't make sense to me. I've got commitments at work that have to be done. If I get everything done, maybe I'll come home early tomorrow or something, but it's kind of weird.
