Sad, but it does seem to happen when some retire. Sad if one has one's whole identity and feelings of self worth tied up with what one does for a living. Live should be richer than that.

A good friend died at 62 yo mere months after retiring from a high pressure position at a state university. My father died at 69 yo, just couple of years after working every day since age 14.
Sudden deaths do seem to keep repeating in your mind. The "why" of it is questioned over and over and never gets a clear, understandable or satisfactory answer.
I hope your sister and her husband can find some peace from their grief in time.
