What do you think of consensual arranged marriage ...

in America, where the people who do the arranging weren't born in America, and where both of the two people who are to be married legally consent to the marriage (but they may be young enough that there is some financial pressure; for example, perhaps neither has yet completed a post-secondary academic credential), and exactly one of the two people who are to be married is an American citizen?

Suppose that the two adults who consent to the arrangement won't meet each other until their wedding. Sorry if that seems redundant to you; I'm not sure exactly what is implied by the term "arranged marriage", so I decided to be very specific.

Would you say that such an arrangement always reduces the freedom of the people who are getting married, or might there be cases when the existence of that kind of cultural tradition gives something like a privilege to the people who are to marry? After all, if two adults improvise their own arranged marriage in the absence of such a cultural motive, and one isn't an American citizen, then they might have no defense against an allegation that the marriage is an attempt to fraudulently circumvent immigration regulations.

The following might be in some respects analogous. Unless I am mistaken, there have been cases where the death of a young adult allowed the parent to sue in North America for a considerable sum of money on the grounds that for cultural reasons there was a settled expectation that the young adult would provide the parent with financial security in old age. For those who cannot claim membership in a cultural tradition with that kind of well-known rule, and in the absence of an actual life insurance policy for the young adult, courts might not order any money to be paid to the parent.
