night sweat solution
i have been going crazy with hot flashes and night sweats. i have recently started wearing these high tech microfiber, super wicking t-shirt things at night. they really, really help. the sweats don't make me feel slimy, and i don't end up shivering when the hot flash cools down. i can sleep!

1. Get Estroven or the equivalent
Soy does help reduce the effects of hot flashes and/or night sweats. Believe me, I tried it and it works.

So you're still a hot babe--only now it comes in flashes :D

2. i refuse to feed the "alternative medicine" industry
not that i have faith in big pharma, especially now. and i know that a lot of the people at the grassroots are well meaning, decent people. but i think, on a corporate level, they are just as bad, passing off a lot of hokum, to people who are desperate and afraid, and often too poor to afford good care. i had a relative who died from this con game, so it is a personal vendetta with me. when i listened to the spokesmen for this industry during the ephedra situation, there was steam coming out of my ears. they are every bit as greedy and evil.
not that i don't believe there are herbs and nutritional things that can do a lot of good. there are. but they should have to either prove it, or not sell it. they pass off as much phony research as the big boys.

3. i use motherwort tincture for flashes
have you read susun weed's 'the menopause years'? she explains every phase of menopause and solutions ranging from herbal/natural to allopathic. i experimented with things and found motherwort to be great for me. there was a time winter before last where i did not sleep for at least two weeks, and i'd wake up soaked in sweat. i had to shower before i could even take the kids to the bus in the morning! it was bad. now i find my flashes are directly related to stress.

4. cold sleeping
now i find my flashes are directly related to stress.

Boy, isn't that the truth. All the more reason to live a laid-back lifestyle.

The T-shirts are a great idea and here's another: black cohosh. There are studies that show it circumvents the hot flash. If you're interested, post here or PM me and I'll look the research up. It's helped me enormously.

Oh and can I say a good word for fans!? Fans are great. I have them everywhere in my house. I love to have a fan going on my shoulders and back as I sleep, even in the dead of winter.

There's a pillow called the "Chillow." I had one for awhile (until my cats dug their nails into it). Great thing for sleeping cool.

Yet another thing I found that's helpful is some type of cold pack that you put in the frig and it doesn't "sweat" as it warms up. I like to put this under my pillowcase.

All of these ideas/devices/activities are not just for hot flashes--I just like to be cold. My husband (a Scotsman) likes to be cold, too. We hate the heat.
