Grandma
my grandma June 30th and I these words came to me..

------

Grandma ****** -
wavy hair as white as the snow
for as long as I can remember.
kind, blue eyes..
who was she?

winter time in that big house -
cold inside and out.
not a child's house.

coached by my aunt
to take whatever they offered
as if it were only a matter of time
until we were no longer welcomed.

we visited them as if they were strangers.
arrangements made by grandma Mac******.
polite hellos and goodbyes.
awkward i love you's.

they were rich.
we were poor and forgotten,
except for the birthday cards.
a savings bond for each of us
warm, thoughtful tender.

i have her blue eyes.
someday i'll have her wavy,
snow white hair.
will my grandchildren know who i am?
