Please, this is very important - to all of us
Help me keep this kicked over in LBN. It keeps trying to slide off the front page.

So many at DU have said "let them overturn Roe, then the states will decide" as though the states will decide in our favor. And for the people on DU who haven't realized that there are places like Mississippi in which there is limited access to abortion and contraception.

Mississippi's only abortion clinic faces new hurdle

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x2007383

Mississippi's only abortion clinic is waiting to hear whether it will be granted a new state certification to continue performing its full range of procedures.

The requirement to meet higher standards came after an aggressive push by anti-abortion advocates, who are trying to shut down the clinic.

"We believe that if they comply and the clinic is safer for women ... at the very least, Mississippi has made the back-alley abortion clinic — or the front-alley abortion clinic as we call them — safer for women but not for unborn children," said Pro-Life Mississippi President Terri Herring.

The Jackson Women's Health Organization, which treats more than 3,000 women a year statewide, said a setback would not mean defeat and may only put the issue back in front of a judge. The clinic, which is still operating, risks having to scale back the kinds of abortion it can perform.

1. Got it
Tried to stir it up a bit with my post.
What bullshit. I had no idea Mississippi was that bad. ONE facility that provides abortions? It's what I get for not paying closer attention. Lord, those poor women. I'll go to work with a heavy heart now.

I saw this horrible tee shirt (I was looking at a feminist web site and they linked to this tee shirt company with horrible shirts like "it ain't rape if she ain't awake"-- They were pissed)
But this other shirt had a picture of a coat hanger with a drop of blood on it at the end, it read "Mother tried, but I survived"
What are we coming to?

2. I added an inflammatory comment... hopefully it will get people looking.
No one thinks about the economics of forcing more children into the system.... It's disgusting.

3. The answer I get from forced birthers on this
Is usually something to the effect that "God will take care of the babies". :eyes: Seriously. They are blithely unconcerned of the ramifications of bringing more unwanted kids into the world and of their fate. It's all about controlling women and perpetuating this delusion that criminalizing a medical procedure will somehow return America to the idyllic 1950s.

Besides, why should they have to pay more taxes for the babies when Abstinence Based edukayshun will be so effective at preventing unwanted pregnancies :sarcasm:

4. But these are the same people who consider poverty a
punishment from God. Seriously. If the mothers were righteous, they wouldn't be in need. :banghead:

5. Thank you!
I had to go offline not long after I posted this last night.

Thanks for keeping up the good fight. I knew I could count on you.

:yourock:

Now, I'm going to go give it a morning kick.

6. I've been stunned
That no one recommended that thread while it was still within the 24-hour window. You'd think that people would realize the import of it.

Damn!

edit to add: I also was unaware of the 24 hour limit.

That's what I get for reading more than I post.

8. In a related issue
There are also threads on the firebombing of a Shreveport clinic as well as an article on the reproductive health care situation in South Dakota, which is just as dire as that in Mississippi.

10. Thank you! I think I saw them. I added links to the above mentioned
thread about South Dakota and North Dakota which each have only 1 clinic.

9. I'm adding here, a link to a website which has stories
and pictures of what can happen when abortion is illegal.

The site is graphic! Proceed with caution if you go there to read the stories, which are also very graphic, and to view the site.

Is it the intent of anti-abortion extremists to ban all abortions?

Of course.

And does their intent involve another method of banning abortions other than overturning Roe vs. Wade?

Yes.

One strategy is to ban abortion procedures one procedure at a time which would effectively make abortion illegal.
