Recommended Reading, Anyone?
Hey DU Fems,

I've seen a few threads here about feminist books, and I am hoping you all might have some recommendations for a young American woman who hasn't been exposed to much literature or nonfiction that would be considered "feminist."

I think the only things I've really read that speak to this (other than individual articles) are Kate Chopin's The Awakening and I just started The Second Stage by Betty Friedan.

So, any recommended reading?

1. Oh shit, where do I begin
I'm a librarian, so stand back:

The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley

Sexism and God-Talk by Rosemary Radford Ruether

When God Was a Woman by Merlin Stone

A Midwife's Tale by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich

Our Bodies, Ourselves by the Boston Women's Health Book Collective

Against Our Will by Susan Brownmiller

Backlash by Susan Faludi

A Vindication on the Rights of Women by Mary Wollstonecraft

The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir

Mismeasure of Woman by Carol Tavris

Women Who Run With the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes

Ain't I a Woman by bell hooks

A Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

The Mommy Myth by Susan Douglas and Meredith Michaels

Cunt: A Declaration of Independence

Reviving Ophelia by Mary Pipher

A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf

Of Woman Born by Adrienne Rich

Witches, Midwives and Nurses by Barbara Ehrenreich

For Her Own Good by Barbara Ehrenreich

I Never Called It Rape by Robin Warshaw

Colonize This! by Daisy Hernandez and Bushra Rehman

Manifesta by Jennifer Baumgardner and Amy Richards

The Woman's Bible by Elizabeth Cady Stanton

The Story of Jane by Laura Kaplan

When Abortion Was a Crime by Leslie Reagan.

You can see that the list reflects some of my specific interests: religion, healthcare, violence against women, women of color, historical feminism. If you're looking for something on a different topic or more specific, let me know and I'll do some searches for you.

2. I LOVE YOU!!!
This is so exactly what I was looking for! Thank you so much!!!

(Ew, I hate exclamation points, lol.)

Seriously though, I really appreciate this. I have a large collection of political science, commentary, and history books, but this section of my personal library is virtually empty.

Knew I'd forget someone important. Also, no Mary Daly, Marge Piercy, Angela Davis.
