Rumblings about Nancy Pelosi...
I was phonebanking today with a bunch of Dems. A young male (Catholic college student at a private school) started in on Nancy Pelosi and stated that if the Dems win the House, he will demand that Murtha become Speaker.

He continued by saying that 'after all, she has had plastic surgery.'

This young student now has 2 assholes. Haven't men evolved at all? It is doubly difficult for me since I fought all of these battles back in the '60's and '70's...I don't like deja vu. And the young women in the office seemed to defer to him. WTF?

Anyone else hear rumblings about Nancy? I guess I should wait until after the election before bringing up this topic...but it just infuriated me today.

Shit...gotta fight repugnants and then the insecure little Dem boys who have issues with mommy. Damn. And he was so self-righteous about this....

The more I know about men, the more I love my pets.

1. I know what you mean

It's been diheartening...it's like they can't even fathom the possibility of a woman as Speaker of the House. *sigh* It's fine for her to be minority leader...but as soon as there's even a hint that the Democrats might get some power...we hear the calls to replace her with a man...and a much more conservative man at that. *double sigh*

4. I think I will *triple sigh*....
and then tell him what a very good friend of mine said years ago..."hell, this white guy has to lay down to take a shit." I hope that makes a bit of sense.

Tomorrow is the big day....and Pelosi WILL BE the SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE and that's all that matters. She is respected by her fellow Representatives.

2. What is up with the plastic surgery comment?
I can't even imagine how that comes in to play.

3. I think it is just an easy way to slam an older
and WISER women...like Nancy would be hurt by such a comment.

He was in the office today....and didn't come near me.

As I told him...no matter what a woman does, she is wrong. If she didn't have plastic surgery, you would mock her wrinkles...Women never do anything right in your eyes and we no longer care what you think.

5. Well now she is the First Woman Speaker of the House
That little prick can go worry about the size of his penis or something. Sorry if I'm rude.
Nancy is now in the history books. She is one of the firsts, one of the beginnings. And she's one of us.

We have the First Woman Speaker of the House. Damn.

6. It makes me so happy that she's not just a progressive Dem
but also a Feminist. I'm really psyched about that.

7. It is sickening that all these people who never cared
when we had heavy drinking, heavy smoking, grossly obese white men as speakers are so damned concerned with a woman speaker's appearance.

It's yet one more sign of blatant double standards. x(

8. Exactly...!
But if I might add, I've thought all day about how fantastic Nancy looked this morning making all the news rounds. She wore a smart suit--she had a gorgeous glow about her. You know she was up ALL night, and didn't look tired AT ALL.

Fuck anyone that says otherwise.

9. and if she DID look tired or unattractive
these assholes have no business commenting on that. As Thom said, the double standard (and age-ism, and denial of the reality that everyone who doesn't die earlier will get wrinkly and droopy) is sickeningly alive and well.

Edited on Thu Nov-09-06 07:15 PM by bliss_eternal
I was attempting to agree with that. In my excitement, maybe that wasn't clear, and I probably shouldn't have commented on her appearance either. :eyes:

My comment was meant more as a "Haha--they can't say a damn thing about THAT!!!" I (erroneously) thought attempts to do so would be thwarted by the fact she looked so good.

Which isn't to say there won't be comments despite that, because inevitably there usually are anyway.

;) and I appreciate your making them. It helped me to consider what I said on another level. I sincerely hoped I didn't offend my sisters with what I said. :hi:

...I was also trying to cover any holes lurkers to our board may try to poke in any of our future arguments (on the main boards), and use against us at a later time (if you know what I mean). Seeing as we've had a few "visitors" from the main forum, follow us here....:eyes:

Reading what I wrote prior and the points you made, I felt nauseous realizing how my comments might bite me in the butt later if (or when) I attempt to confront someone on their shallow, sexist comments. :banghead:

16. At least it's not too often!
One of the things I liked about Ms Pelosi was her style and class when meeting with bush. She managed to look more professional--and presidential-- for that matter than he ever has. She has quite the presence. I don't expect her to run, but the comparison between a buffoon and a professional was striking, regardless of gender

As far as looks, bush has played up that macho man crap for so long, (I still cringe when I think of that Time magazine cover with him in a blue shirt with the sleeves partially rolled up...) With his different ridiculous outfits he himself is walking stereotype.

Nancy looks like I would expect in our current climate. Women's appearance in the professional/political world is still dictated by fashion, gender expectations and preference. Not in that order.(I also cringe whenever I see oh, say Condezella Rice in pointy high heels getting off a plan, those sucka's HURT)So it's not like she can throw on a shirt and jeans. So while I know I'll be gritting my teeth when "What Nancy is wearing" is mentioned as I know it will be, along with speculations about her weight, sexual preference, looks, etc.. As they do with all women of power-- I find her ability to maintain a strong competent appearance important.

You said so much of what I was feeling, (at the time I wrote about how she looked)but lacked the words to express.

:yourock:

Also, thank you for sharing concrete examples that we can all relate to. I remember that Time cover. :eyes: Those pointy toed high-heeled shoes DO hurt--and you gotta wonder why Condeleeza was out shopping for MORE during Katrina...

...no doubt about it, Nancy did look powerful! ...maybe because she IS! ;)

18. It's sad that women can't take respect for granted.
Or that young people have a problem with women in power. The battle goes on.

It's good for him to know that you don't appreciated his comments. It's good for the young women, too.

19. I'm so glad Nancy was elected unanimously to the
position of Speaker of the House! Truly historic. She will do well.

A remarkable role model for all of us.

I think I heard that her husband shops for her clothing! What a secure guy!

I'm hoping to run in to my little rich college guy one of these days and ask him what he thinks of this unanimous vote?! lol.

hearing a comment that she got her eye lift surgeon from Tom Delay who had his eyes done. Hmmmm, hers matters but his did not.

Whatever. I am not particularly fond of Nancy but I am damn happy as a woman to have her where she is. I wish her well.

Edit because I CAN'T spell
