And the outpouring of love and worry from foreigners like Neil Young (Canada) and the Stones (England) and so many other people -- it's also a powerful statement of what America is all about. It's a shame it took "Skidmark" Bush to bring that out, but then again, we've never had anyone like Bush to deal with before.

I never served. I was fortunate in that I didn't have to, by either the draft or volunteering. But my father was a lifer in the Army (he started in the Navy in WW2), and his life was the military -- and his family. He wasn't an ass-kicker around the house, but growing up, I could see what the military was all about, good and bad alike.

He actually did threaten to kick my ass once -- if I decided to go into the military before I finished school. He was a Chief, and he told me he'd be ashamed if I started a military career at a lower rank than his. It's strange how many of my other service-brat friends had similar stories about their military dads (and later on, moms).
