2. Elmer Gantry by Sinclair Lewis
A drunk ne'er-do-well finally finds success as an Everyman Preacher, not affiliated with a mainline religion, but with a religious show with a female leader who is supposed to represent Aimee Semple McPherson, the evangelist in the 20s. Elmer betrays his friends, loves and abandons good decent women, fools megacrowds with how the Bible saved him and they will burn in Hell without taking heed of his words. At the end, his wife and followers are about to tar and feather him. But he does a Jimmy Swaggert, confesses to being a sinner, and all is forgiven.

8. How does she ever find time to read?
Between popping Valiums and smiling vacantly you would think all of her time would be consumed.
