ref: point of info? As I understand it, Libby had clearance to know Valerie Plame's identity--right?--but of course revealing her name to those who didn't have clearance, especially with malicious intent, is a felony, and arguably treason. Someone at DK did say something substantive, which I read and then couldn't find my way back to, about the remark that Wilson's wife "was fair game", which Rove said (?). And how was Lynn Cheney involved in that remark? The "fair game" remark would indicate malicious intent. That might satisfy the federal statute against revealing a CIA agent's identity, which requires proof of intent.
And then there's conspiracy.
Do you think it's possible that the charges against Rove will go to the main crime--beyond perjury and obstruction--and what may be occurring, and what is taking so much time, is--possibly--new charges against Libby on the main crime? And/or, MORE people indicted (or named as unindicted co-conspirators)? Maybe I'm wishfully thinking here, but, given Fitzgerald's going to a second grand jury, the hours of additional testimony, and the time that this has taken, and is taking now--could we be looking, next week, at major revelations--and not just a second perjurer/obstructer of justice (Rove)?
OR--less hopefully--Rove is ratting on Libby, the designated fall guy, to protect Bush and Cheney. A more likely possibility, I think. And thus they will try to salvage some of the Bush junta "agenda" (kill some people in Iran; but maybe not a full scale bombing; preserve the fattest tax cuts for the rich--which they just did more of, this week--keep their secret prisoners, whoever they are, wherever they are, to cover up other crimes; keep their NSA database on everybody and his brother, for blackmail purposes; and, via Diebold/ES&S, install some war Democrats in Congress, and possibly in the WH in '08, to keep a lid on things...).
There is quite a lot at stake--to put it mildly--and we should never forget that, in trying to evaluate this case. Although the Judith Miller jailing likely made jail seem more real in connection with this case, I think it probable that both Libby and Rove think that jail is a very remote possibility for THEM--that they will get out of it somehow. They were among the most powerful men in the world a short time ago. They may still think that their mighty bosses and puppetmasters will get them out of it--or reward them so richly that a few years in jail would be endurable. And--who knows?--Hillary may have already agreed to go along with pardons in her deal with Dark Powers. (I'm more and more convinced that she's made one.) So a deal for Libby to take the fall may have been made (at the WH); or, if necessary, both Libby and Rove (--although, of the two, I would think Libby could weather jail better than Rove), with actual jail time unlikely, due to pardon deals.
Another thought: IF Libby and/or Rove are the fall guys, then I think there is quite a lot more at risk here than meets the eye. Not just the Plame/Brewster Jennings outing crime. And not just the loss of power. And not just the other crimes we know about (the mass murder of war, massive thievery, rigged elections...). If you try to put yourself inside the government right now, looking out--and review the whole landscape, it appears that powerful counter-forces to the Bush junta are at work to bring them down. What could be occurring that requires that such powerful heads roll?
I mean, just look at these war profiteering corporate news monopoly opinion polls on Bush. Since when would they give us honest polls--a 29% Bush approval rating? (--probably his real approval rating all along). And think about the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Never in its history has anybody done what Stephen Colbert did--coldcock the President and the entire press corp at that cozy Beltway laugh fest.
The Calif Assembly Rules Committee just reported out a bill of impeachment against Bush and Cheney! If it passes the Calif legislature (which has a 2 to 1 Dem majority), it's one of those bills under the Jefferson's Manual rules (also submitted in Illinois and Vermont) which can be submitted by an individual state directly to the US House of Reps as a privileged bill for which all House business must stop until it is considered. It does not need a House member to sponsor it. And, if it is submitted to the House, it will be a huge, huge embarrassment to Bush and Bushites--an unprecedented state rebellion, a "shot heard round the world," the sort of thing that could cause the whole nation to stand up and cheer.
Now, I've been watching the Calif situation closely since the "swift-boating" of Kevin Shelley (because of his actions against Diebold), and the Calif Assembly Democrats' action on this bill of impeachment surprised the hell out of me. I didn't think they would have the integrity and courage to report this bill out. I thought it would be buried in committee and never heard from again. San Francisco Congresswoman and House minority leader Pelosi just issued a statement that "impeachment is off the table." And the previously cowardly, collusive Calif legislative leadership lets a bill of impeachment get out of committee the same day??
Then there's the NYT article today on some new massive security "back door" problem with Diebold voting machines. The NYT! Major colluders in the stolen election!
So, what I'm thinking is that there is something **REALLY** bad hanging over the Bush junta WH--that a lot of insiders may know about, but that benevolent but paternalistic powers have decided is too much for the American people. Maybe the stolen election. Maybe 9/11. Maybe something we don't even know about. And all this OTHER rather astonishing convergence of bad news for the junta--Bush and Cheney's top aides going down, huge whistleblowing leak on the massive NSA spying on Americans, the 12 (?) generals attacking Rumsfeld, and so much else that I can't even keep up with it--is some kind of concerted effort to disempower Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld, to defang the junta, and either get them out of there or cripple their ability to do harm for the remainder of their term.
Well, a nice late night dream, maybe. But there certainly seems to be a rumble in the land. What are your thoughts, UnderstandingLife?
