McCain was a hit at Falwell's Liberty U
Hotline reports-

...He spoke of how people need to be "respectful of the goodness in each other." McCain: "I have not always heeded this injunction myself, and I regret it very much."

I don't disagree. He definitely has not heeded that injunction. The instance he cited involved his feelings about a friend who protested the Vietnam War (and how his friend had an "epiphany" which allowed McCain to magnanamously forgive him), but it's another time he fell short that I always remember.

Earlier this month, at a Republican Senate fund-raiser, McCain told a downright nasty joke.....When McCain subsequently apologized to President Clinton (*after the checks were cashed, one supposes -RS), the Washington Post, in its personality section, noted the apology but said the joke "was too vicious to print.".....
Salon feels its readers deserve the unadulterated truth. Though no tape of McCain's quip has yet emerged, this is what he reportedly said:

"Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?
Because her father is Janet Reno."

http://www.salon.com/news/1998/06/25newsb.html

The boundaries of what we find humorous aren't rigid -each of us has told a joke which, upon reflection, we may have left lay. But how many have told the joke in front of a room full of people, while seeking a position of leadership, at the expense of an adolescent girl?

It isn't news to DU, but there are usually a few who haven't heard this story. It always struck me, as the Limbaugh jokes about Chelsea did, as all I ever needed to know about this person.

More from Hotline-

He received a standing ovation from the 2,458 graduates in the standing-room only auditorium -- both after his speech and when he was introduced. And Falwell was gracious, saying of McCain: "We today pay tribute to a great American."

2. A 'friend' who protested the war?
Hmmm, I wonder if that one-time friend served on the Joint Committee on POWs and MIAs from Vietnam. If so, then yeah, someone just had an epiphany, don't trust McCain -- ever.

8. McCain spent seven years in a North Vietnamese prison being tortured.
He came home a hero, only to turn into just another Republican hack.

How could McCain ever back Bush's world-wide torture chambers? How could he back his phony war? How could he justify the dead and maimed returning from Iraq every single hour of every single day?

The answer is simple. He wants to be president so badly, he'd eat his own children and then eat yours. The man has turned into a living, walking, lying sack of Republican sewerage. Any conscience and decency he once had has somehow shriveled up and died. He's now nothing more than an empty shell who has been inflated with presidential ambitions.

And if he'd sell himself out this way, what would he do to the rest of us?

10. The man has no integrity, as far as I am concerned.
He allowed the Rove machine to savage his wife and child and didn't even whisper a protest in defense of them. He's already cannibalized his family. I'll be damned if he's going cannibalize mine.
