I'm outing myself as being Pro-Choice
This does NOT mean I am pro-abortion or even think abortion is the best idea all the time.

It does mean that I don't think the government should be involved in the decision a woman makes about a pregnancy.

It does mean that I respect the rights of others NOT to have an abortion if they are opposed morally to it. I would never want to see a "China policy" of enforced abortions for population control. I consider this inherently wrong and inherently anti-choice.

It does mean that I respect each woman enough to make the choice that is best in her own mind.

It does mean that I back ALL efforts to provide birth control, sex education, and other important contraception tools to women and men. Ultimately, widespread contraception use would certainly reduce some of the abortions performed and that would be fine with me.

It does mean that I support the right of rape victims, incest and molestation victims, and women whose pregnancies risk their lives or health (including mental health) to have an abortion without harassment.

It does mean that I support the right of women not in these dire straights to both consider and have an abortion without undue burden, whether I agree with their reasons or not.

It does mean that I support the rights of ALL women and men to proper healthcare in regard to sexually transmitted diseases, HIV/AIDS and the like.

It does mean that I support ongoing research into safer medical procedures for abortion and, ultimately, into making the procedure more private with medications like RU-486.

I came to these conclusions (or manifesto, maybe) by myself, by thinking it out.

Nikki

2. That's it in a nutshell-- Pin This To The Top Of GD!!
:applause: :yourock: (and the title is funny  )

Then the "safe, legal and rare" crowd can get busy creating better social/economic environments for women! And the folks who want to reach out to "Pro-Life" types can invite THEM to help creating better social/economic environments for women!

I've lived abroad for quite some time and have NEVER, not even once, had a discussion about abortion with ANYONE. No one feels the need to state the obvious sensibilities in your post as it's respected as a PRIVATE MATTER that requires no public discourse whatsoever.

I do so wish such an environment for you, but until then...

Don't you KNOW you're just a receptacle to be used for the ultimate rights of sperm that reached MANIFEST DESTINY???

Don't you KNOW that a fertilized egg is MORE VALUABLE than a living breathing woman?

Don't you KNOW that ONLY SLUTS SULLY THEMSELVES BY ENGAGING IN SEXUAL INTERCOURSE??? (They MUST be punished if they are female. Most'specially if they were smiling the next day!)

Andonandonandonandon.... :SIGH:

OH AND I ALMOST FORGOT!!!

Don't you KNOW you need 10 threads-a-day written by men to instruct us all how IT should work (ecpecially POLITICALLY)???

11. Now THAT'S the thing!
It ISN'T. It's just a PRIVATE MATTER.

Every Xmas I wait for the call to play Gottesdienst at a Catholic Mass. I'm not Christian but am ALWAYS so delighted to partake in their rituals, play some FABULOUS music and just BE THERE with them as they do their thing. Last Xmas I played a mass that had NOT been played since its premier in 16XX. L-O-V-E-D I-T!!! Somebody found the score in an attic or something...

What I really appreciate is the "live and let live" attitude. Whatever choices folks make are THEIR business. Not the business of the church or state. They can show up or not as they see fit.

12. That's really interesting. We're divided along these wacko lines here
There must be a lot of culture shock looking at who we've become over here.

14. Too bad you live abroad
 ....because I wanted to make the "Why do you hate America?" joke to your brilliant post. (Don't want you to think i meant it :hi: )

You mean people in Europe treat each other (including women) like ADULTS? :wow:

Why isn't the OP pinned to the top of GD yet? :bounce: :kick:

5. THe thing is, if the RW actually cared about reducing abortion, they'd
support 90% of what you (we) support. But it's all a sham to pander to the least intelligent, cruelest, and most gullible among us.

6. You are exactly correct, electropop! Unfortunately, their 'mission' is NOT
to prevent abortions by reducing unplanned pregnancies, their 'mission' is to force their beliefs and what THEY and their radical religious leaders believe is the 'correct' behavior. I was caught up in that craziness, fortunately very briefly, before I realized they didn't give a damn about preventing pregnancies!!
Oh, BTW, I, kiteinthewind, am Pro-Choice!!!

13. Pro-Choice here, too
I owe it to my two grand-daughters to not only be pro-choice, but to state it in unequivical terms. I'm tired of all of the mental gymnastics & word-smithing that some play with a woman's right to health care, privacy, and autonomy.

Thank you for this thread. Nikki, :yourock:

158. I believe that every situation is unique to the woman involved,
and that the ethical approach is to let her handle it without intrusion.
