KARL ROVE HAS BEEN INDICTED.
For those who have been waiting for this, here it is. For those who still doubt, well, I guess this is the big throwdown. We are reporting this has happened, we have checked and re-checked our sources. Truthout is breaking this first.

Karl Rove Indicted on Charges of Perjury, Lying to Investigators
By Jason Leopold
t r u t h o u t | Report

Saturday 13 May 2006

Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald spent more than half a day Friday at the offices of Patton Boggs, the law firm representing Karl Rove.

During the course of that meeting, Fitzgerald served attorneys for former Deputy White House Chief of Staff Karl Rove with an indictment charging the embattled White House official with perjury and lying to investigators related to his role in the CIA leak case, and instructed one of the attorneys to tell Rove that he has 24 hours to get his affairs in order, high level sources with direct knowledge of the meeting said Saturday morning.

Robert Luskin, Rove's attorney, did not return a call for comment. Sources said Fitzgerald was in Washington, DC, Friday and met with Luskin for about 15 hours to go over the charges against Rove, which include perjury and lying to investigators about how and when Rove discovered that Valerie Plame Wilson was a covert CIA operative and whether he shared that information with reporters, sources with direct knowledge of the meeting said.

It was still unknown Saturday whether Fitzgerald charged Rove with a more serious obstruction of justice charge. Sources close to the case said Friday that it appeared very likely that an obstruction charge against Rove would be included with charges of perjury and lying to investigators.

An announcement by Fitzgerald is expected to come this week, sources close to the case said. However, the day and time is unknown. Randall Samborn, a spokesman for the special prosecutor was unavailable for comment. In the past, Samborn said he could not comment on the case.

The grand jury hearing evidence in the Plame Wilson case met Friday on other matters while Fitzgerald spent the entire day at Luskin's office. The meeting was a closely guarded secret and seems to have taken place without the knowledge of the media.

220. My husband just informed me there IS champagne in the house and
it will soon be put on ice. Just like kkkarl.

I'm a BIG admirer of Jason Leopold's work. He just might be THE best investigative reporter in Washington at the moment. Oh yes, and I will be singing and dancing, too. But I already have my song:

"Na-na-na-na, na-na-na-na, hey-hey-hey, GOO-OOD BYE!"

Hell, I'm already humming that one...

Thanks for posting this, Will! Cheers! And yes, you have to check your source(s) on this one, and I'm glad it's plural. I'm glad it's noted in the story that this is pegged to half a dozen White House people and a couple more besides. Attribution, always! You guys are TRUE pros. You put the "big leaguers" to absolute shame. They should be paying you and Jason and Marc Ash the big bucks that the katie courics and diane sawyers and tim russerts and bob woodwards get. I suspect that while they're all in make-up, or rushing to those high-level cocktail parties to rub elbows with the big shots in DC so they can brag about their precious access, outsiders like you guys are busy working and getting the actual job done.

When we toast this, I will also be lifting my glass to you guys.

:headbang:

Edited on Sat May-13-06 04:52 PM by TahitiNut
All three phrases are used in the first six paragraphs.

"... Fitzgerald spent more than half a day Friday at the offices of Patton Boggs ..."
"... Fitzgerald was in Washington, DC, Friday and met with Luskin for about 15 hours ..."
"... Fitzgerald spent the entire day (Friday) at Luskin's office."

and that will turn off even more people.

The only ones left supporting this administration are the batshit insane people we hear on WJ on C-SPAN in the morning and those still posting at freeperville.

Extremism has never been an acceptable form of politics at the polls.

375. If they thought a "let's fix the Messican problem, heh, heh" speech
...could deflect from the indictment of the Architect, they're insane. Stupid. Totally out of touch. He could actually come up with a BRILLIANT, equitable, agreeable-to-all plan to resolve the undocumented worker matter (we won't hold our breath, though) and it would be BURIED under any Fitzgerald announcement.

About the only thing that might take the edge off is if he announced that his crack team of scientists discovered a way to turn seawater into gasoline...and I don't think that's in the cards!

237. Exactly. Yes, he'll still be working on his "priorities," but I bet there
will be some wind taken out of his sails by this. He WILL have to spend some of that time and energy with his own lawyers, trying to save his own ass. He can't just focus exclusively on the campaigns, much as he'd like to. This will be a SERIOUS distraction, and probably also, headlines for weeks. Everybody other than Jason Leopold will have to try everything they can think of to advance the story for their own network/paper/show/whatever. The bushies may also find themselves diverting a lot of legal muscle over to kkkarl's cause, and perhaps also, at the expense of others (like maybe libby) and others of their friends who need legal assistance. He himself will become priority one - everything will become re-geared towards saving kkkarl. He will not be operating at full strength, even if bushco sends in lots of legal reinforcements. The kkkarl team will still need kkkarl's personal participation to press their case. So, no matter how much he wants to focus singlemindedly on swiftboating Democrats for November, he's gonna have to divert at least some of his attention to his own defense. Even though we can also expect an inevitable presidential pardon for him. I doubt he'll ever see the inside of a jail cell. But one can certainly hope...

33. HaHa again, IF, IF, IF, Bush ACCEPTS Rove's resignation BEFORE
the Novembe it will be a coup.

However, Rove has a spanking new multi-million dollar home in DC so I'm sure he'll be directing the usual republican election smearing, distorting & lying just as if he was doing it from his office at the White House.

Rove is their boy, who will do the dirty work for the republicans and the vindictive Rove enjoys every second doing it...Such as making sure electronic voting machines are ready to be manipulated in the certain precincts around the country where they are necessary to assure the republican majority in congress!!!

73. You obviously don't understand what an indictment does to
a person's mental state! I DO! Not ME, thank God, but some people I've worked for. That indictment takes priority over EVERYTHING in their life!

Some in the Pub Party may still want his advice, but I really doubt his advice will be worth much anymore! There's also a reason for a lot of Pubs to want to put as much distance between THEM, Rove and the WH!

200. Is Karl enough of a sociopath / egomaniac that it won't bother him much?
I know he won't feel guilty for a second, but will his ego tell him he has nothing to fear? If so, he could remain a dire threat.

Sort of off-topic: On the Psychology of Legal Problems

I've been sued twice, once by a vindictive bastard who didn't bother showing up to court. I worked hard putting together a package to defeat him and should have counter-sued. I was also sued for an automobile accident I caused. I scraped an elderly couple's rear right fender while trying to avoid rear-ending them. Yeah, it was a bad place in the road, should have had a turn lane, blah blah blah, but it was my fault. What wasn't my fault were all the medical problems the couple developed after the accident, including the man's inability to get it up for his wife. They tried to sue me for $350,000, $100,000 of which had to do with their loss of a sex life. I kid you not. I put a three foot shallow scrape on their bumper. We all drove away after the cops came. I wasn't even issued a ticket. Later I was blamed for the couple's terrible sex life. Damn, who can I sue for my lousy sex life?

I do have a conscience, a very tender one, and despite the fact that I was completely in the right in one case and probably being used to collect money in the other case, I felt terrible about the impending court dates, the hearings, the depositions, everything. I worried that some of the couple's complaints might be legitimate, yet I felt bitter that they were obviously using me to milk money from the system. Some of the angst linked back to my childhood. I spent over a year in court testifying about sex crimes committed against me. As you can imagine, I hate court and courtrooms. Also, seeing the word "defendant" next to my name seemed to imply I was some kind of monster.

I obsessed over those court cases. They consumed nearly every waking thought and caused me untold emotional distress.

Unfortunately, I don't think Rove has a very well developed superego...if he has one at all. But he is a selfish bastard and should worry about jail time unless he has the world's biggest ego (a possibility) or knows something we don't (another, very horrible possibility).

What do you think? Will this distract Rove at all?

It's a whole other story when someone is guilty and was trying everything to keep it quiet, but gets found out! I don't think Rove's ego or arrogance will matter this time. This time it's HIS ASS! Nope, this will consume his every waking moment, and there will be many, because sleeping will be difficult!

If this puts Rove out of action, it will help a lot.

Like I said in the other response, I just want these criminals acknowledged as such and put in a place where they can no longer harm the rest of us. Considering how the Bush Crime Family has evaded time and again, I am worried that we may be screwed. I don't want it to take a major upheaval, but considering how dense some of our fellow Americans are, that may be the only thing that works.

250. Uh yeah... Did anyone notice, when he was finished testifying for the
FIFTH time, how much weight he's lost? I seriously doubt he was merely working toward bikini season. This IS big trouble if it's true and it WILL command a LOT of his attention. Besides, his troubles will all be endured under the glare of the lights of all that publicity and the news hounds who will camp out on his front lawn and infringe upon his privacy and bother his wife and block his driveway and litter his yard and annoy his kid and his kid's friends. It won't be an easy thing to just go "drop by kkkarl's place" after hours anymore as I'm sure some pols have done routinely as they consult his wisdomship for their own careers. He thinks he lives in a fishbowl now? Wait til the indictment comes down. However, you can bet one other thing - I bet if he ever has hus mug shot taken, it'll be all upstanding and smiley like tom delay's was, so the opposition couldn't make much use of it.

BTW, I'm in no way disparaging Truthout by alleging it doesn't take much to scoop them anymore: it's just a fact. Most of the corporate media is chocked full of lazy slime these days.

264. Here, here. It's 10 years since I left the business. It's completely
deteriorated in that time. But as long as the White House has handouts to pass around, and there are lazy reporters more interested in not blowing their precious fucking access by doing a "Cincinatti rewrite" on it, or afraid of rattling somebody's cages in the executive suites, that's how it may stay. For now.

No disparaging of anyone from Cincinatti. I used to work with a guy who produced one of the local news shows. I wrote for it. He used to talk all the time about what he called the "Cincinatti rewrite" - in which you just regurgitate the press release or the A-wire (long writethru meant for newspapers, not for air). It was his nickname for lazy writing.

Time and time again I see stories broken first on the internet, only to watch the MSM pat each other on the back for "breaking" the news hours, days, weeks, even months later.

If not, you and Leopold have staked your reputation on a bad story and your many followers may cast a jaundiced eye towards future "scoops" you endorse.

If so, you'll hear nothing but praise from moi from now on.

But did you see that grin on Scottie's face on his last day at that podium? It was genuine and joyful. McClellen is happy to be out and his face shows that as clearly as his lying always did. He should not ever take up poker.

271. Come to think of it, that 24-hour note is RAWTHER intriguing.
Considering how this bunch manipulates the news coverage, how conceivable might it be that this is actually happening, NOW? That kkkarl is cleaning out his desk NOW - on a Saturday of a Mother's Day weekend when the Friday night news dump has already come and gone and there won't be any coverage of anything til Monday and all the main camera crews are off for the weekend (as are most of the big name correspondents and anchors and ALL of the news/network brass) and you have skeleton crews on staff in most of the DC outlets, and the city's pretty dead and everybody's off at their beach houses and boats and golf courses til Monday? A savvy assignment editor might do well to assign some crew to birddog kkarl NOW, camp out across the street from his house and keep watch around the clock. That's what some of 'em did during Watergate. It may be going down even as we speak, so that it'll be a done deal by Monday when it's announced (or WHENEVER) and kkkarl will ALREADY have cleared out his office and departed, so nobody can get any pictures for the news shows. Wouldn't surprise me at all if they were smuggling him out the side door when everybody else is off duty for the weekend, so that when work resumes on Monday morning, he's long gone and safely out of range.

I'll BET that's what's happening.

I'll bet kkkarl rove sightings from here on will be VERY limited. Get him OUTTA there! Don't want the reminders out there on the evening news to distract everybody from the distractions WE'VE already arranged, do we?

124. If it looks like this will continue up the food chain
my prediction is that he will resign so that Chimpy can appoint a VP (McCain), then Chimpy will either resign before being impeached (more noble but unlikely - this creature is not noble) or after and will be pardoned as will Cheney et al., by the aforementioned VP who will become acting President for the remainder of the term. Acting President McCain will then have the incumbent advantage, probably the only Rethug on earth to be able to fish an advantage out of this mess. Anyone still confused by the turn around of McCain and the famous huggsys and cakes?

The names are different, but the story has a feel of deja vu to it, doesn't it?

352. Um,
I just told a group with 80,000 members. I doubt the RNC looks at it, but don't worry, I won't spill the beans to them. But, come on, this doesn't look like rocket science to me - those of us over the age of 40 have seen this already, different cast, pretty much same storyline.

Our next move? Who the hell knows?

My next move would be to cry. My next step after that would be to pray that McCain hasn't gone completely to the dark side but I'm not holding out a lot of hope there - more, I would hope that he would stand up to his puppet masters once he was in the Oval Office. He is, after all, a tad smarter than the Chimp and he's been seasoned by life in a way the Chimperor cannot even imagine. Sadly, though, he is smart enough to pardon all as ordered as he will be destroyed otherwise.

No good news here. I'm just hoping they're too stupid for this one. I mean, it's happened before. They aren't nearly as smart as we give them credit for and evil without smart is not well focused.

So, I remain hopeful that they will continue to chase their tails and continue to put their trust in Diebold, er, I mean God. And I hope no one lets the chimperor near the button - he's got way too itchy fingers. He wants to put the "nukular" hurt on Iran in a big way, and not just so he can be the "War Prez'dint" again and get to strut around in his flight suit.

Maybe now with the BCF and Neo-con Admin. imploding, we can maybe, just maybe, get our country back (if the bastards don't start WWIII or pull another 9-11).

And when we do, we will investigate every damn crime they ever committed: illegal pre-emptive war and profiteering, oil and energy monopoly and profiteering, MIHOP 9-11, Patriot Act, NSA domestic spying via phone/email/satellite imagery, election fraud and corruption, political assassinations all the way back to JFK, and so much more.

God, please make it come true. May your truth prevail, and all the criminals who are destroying this good Earth and our once great country rot in hell.

I called her up to sing "Happy Birthday" to her--I'm a vocalist --and she asked me what I've been doing today.

"Followin' the news," I said casually. When I asked her what was going on, I told her an "alternative news source" was reporting that Karl Rove has been indicted. :) Hey, at least it will cause a little cognitive dissonance until she hears the "Karl is innocent" talking points. Probably she's already heard them, so this may not have fazed her. I do hope she has a happy birthday, but I also wish she would let something into her brain besides Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, et al. It ain't never gonna happen though. :(

Because it's just in their nature as lying, corrupt scumbags that they just can't help themselves from leaking stuff or doing something wrong, it's the only life they know.

I believe if Rove does not desire to negotiate a plea agreement after being given 24 hours from notification of charges, Fitz can then present the judge with formal charges and make the public announcement.

196. These little technical details trip me up. I thought that once the GJ
voted to indict they moved with haste to a courtroom and handed up their indictment to the judge who then gets it recorded and swears out the arrest order, etc.

Is there a lawyer out there who can clear up the choreographic options?

253. I have my doubts that GJ has voted on the charges that Fitz is planning
It is possible that Fitz was notifying Rove's attorneys that he has decided to recommend that the GJ indict Rove on these charges and gave Rove 24 hours in case Rove wants to roll over. Then if Rove indicates no interest in a plea bargain, Fitz must meet with the GJ next week for them to vote to indict, indictment goes to judge and then Fitz will announce press conference for the next day.

Perjury's nice (and obvious), but these people aren't just liars. They're traitors. You or I would've been lined up against the wall by now, not that we would ever stoop to their level.

They're not getting what they're due.
Frog march 'em, sure, but they should still keep digging. I'd say we have a cap of... ohhh... <consults Ken Starr's receipts>.. about 160 million taxpayer dollars and several more years, in all fairness. Keep it up, Fitz.

122. I'm a believer, I believe Leopold's article.
Edited on Sat May-13-06 04:39 PM by me b zola
So now I'm wondering about the timing of bush*s immigration speech tomorrow. In Leopold's article that you posted yesterday, 'ROVE INFORMS WHITE HOUSE HE WILL BE INDICTED', the final paragraph is sticking out im my mind:

"... "There's no doubt that it will be front page news if and when (an indictment) happens. But eventually it will become old news quickly. The key issue here is that the president or Mr. Bolten respond to the charges immediately, make a statement and then move on to other important policy issues and keep that as the main focus going forward.""

I think that this is how they will handle the spin. They will inudate the airwaves with their talking heads saying things like "bush* is working at the people's business, and all you (meaning anyone who is talking about the indictment and the corruption of the administration) want to play the blame game. We want to look forward, and you all are looking back." ----or some dribble to that effect.

If I'm right about how they are going to spin it, are we ready to counter it? Are our elected Dems who will get airtime? Will the media focus on the big story of bush*s brain being indicted, or will they be bullied into dropping it for more slight of hand by bush*?

I thought for sure the logging of domestic phone calls would do the trick and save the country/world. Evidently I'm a big alarmist, this has all happened before and all we have to do is wait through some arcane media spin process by which the Democrats must deny any intentions of impeachment for 5 more months, get elected, break said promise and viola!. Oh yeah, and any talk of election shenanigans is just looony.

267. ? It's not a civil case, it's a criminal matter. Perhaps to give Rover a
last chance to take a plea before he turns himself in for the ultimate photo op, a booking photo?

It's also not unheard of to arrange for a surrender in advance in cases like this as opposed to having the cops show up during breakfast and hauling you out while you've still in your PJ's. Also perhaps it could be a "courtesy" to someone who reportedly allegedly has been helping shove other people under the bus in an attempt to mitigate his own fate. Althought the thought of Rover taking off on the lam would be kinda interesting.

Don't know, just speculatin'. ;)

298. Of course you're right about it not being a civil case. I was thinking
"white collar crime" not civil case. Duh.

Still, I think it's overly dramatic to say "get your affairs in order" in a case like this.

That's what they said to Dearest Husband 26 years ago when MD Anderson Cancer Center sent him home as terminal.

Lucky for him, another surgery and some radiation did the trick. Bonus? Doesn't even have to use deoderant on that side. :)

Anyway, the choice of words just seemed odd to me.

been a kick in the gut.

But yeah you're right on the report. Unless they're planning to keep Rover in the slammer without bail, which is unlikely and that was your original point, that "get your affairs in order" is a tad melodramatic. I hope that's not part of some spin going on. Poor Rover, sent home to pack his toothbrush, a change of boxers, sigh a farewell to his kids and his wife (who bizarrely looks like a female clone of Rover) before toddling off to the big house. ;)

He was a toddler when his Air Force family lived in the Marshall Islands. They used to watch the atomic tests over Bikini, and they swam in the lagoon.

Unfortunately, the lagoon was where they towed the hulls of the ships that had been the targets of the blasts.

Nothing like a little radiation in the morning.

His father had all kinds of internal problems, but lived a normal lifespan. His mother lost her eyesight to macular degeneration.

DH had an awful cancer at age 35. His younger sister (unborn at the time they lived on Kwajalein) had an intestinal blockage, and when they opened her up, everything was backward!

Coincidence? You decide. :)

The word "call" means to exclaim, or declare

The word "bullshit" has homogeneous (single) meaning, as opposed to a heterogenous one where it could mean anything. It means the dung of the male cow. In other words, what the claims of Leopold are worth.

I would also like to define "non-response" as what happens when a request is made (like "please define non-response") and despite a reply changing the subject, the definition is not provided.

Edit: I would like to thank you for the opportunity to make my points clear. Are they crystal enough for you?

161. Rove Informs White House He Will Be Indicted
http://www.opednews.com/articles/opedne_jason_le_060513_rove_informs_white_h.htm

Within the last week, Karl Rove told President Bush and Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten, as well as a few other high level administration officials, that he will be indicted in the CIA leak case and will immediately resign his White House job when the special counsel publicly announces the charges against him, according to sources.

Details of Rove's discussions with the president and Bolten have spread through the corridors of the White House where low-level staffers and senior officials were trying to determine how the indictment would impact an administration that has been mired in a number of high-profile political scandals for nearly a year, said a half-dozen White House aides and two senior officials who work at the Republican National Committee.

178. WTF??? THIS ARTICLE DOESN'T MAKE SENSE
I know you guys are all going to flame me, but please please hear me out on this:

"Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald spent more than half a day Friday at the offices of Patton Boggs, the law firm representing Karl Rove."

"Sources said Fitzgerald was in Washington, DC, Friday and met with Luskin for about 15 hours to go over the charges against Rove"

"The grand jury hearing evidence in the Plame Wilson case met Friday on other matters while Fitzgerald spent the entire day at Luskin's office."

Something is just wrong here.

Which was it?

Half a day? An entire day? Fifteen hours?

When did Fitz get time to file these papers here? http://msnbc.msn.com/id/12774143/site/newsweek

Why the HELL would Fitz spend fifteen hours "going over the charges" against Rove? Hullo???

This isn't how Fitz works. Review how he handled Libby.

You mean NO OTHER MEDIA would have noticed this? Fitz has been followed everywhere in recent months.

"instructed one of the attorneys to tell Rove that he has 24 hours to get his affairs in order"

Assuming this is true, THIS sounds like a target letter (or the equivalent). Which would mean the previous target letter Leopold reported as being fact several times over does not exist.

"Sources close to the case said Friday that it appeared very likely that an obstruction charge against Rove would be included with charges of perjury and lying to investigators."

"An announcement by Fitzgerald is expected to come this week, sources close to the case said. However, the day and time is unknown."

Perjury and lying to the investigators are the same things.

Fitz isn't the one who indicts. The Grand Jury is. It was reported they met on other things Friday, so they didn't indict Rove unless they did it previously, in which case, we would have HEARD ABOUT IT!

So we have no sources that will go on record, no comments from anybody directly involved, and conflicting info throughout the article.

This is horrible. We have REAL NEWS TODAY ON THE CIA LEAK CASE, and it is here:

http://thenexthurrah.typepad.com/the_next_hurrah/2006/05/fitzgerald_coll.html
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/12774143/site/newsweek/

An actual document. Court filings. Actual news backed up by proof. Where is your proof, Truthout? Why aren't you reporting the real news of the documents in the Libby case?

204. Incredible. How closely did you read the article?....

Why do you believe the two events are mutually exclusive? If Fitz spent half a day in the Patton Boggs office, that would equal about 4-6 hours talking to Luskin. Fitz then spent the remaining 9-11 hours talking with Luskin at one or more locations outside of the Patton Boggs office.

"The grand jury hearing evidence in the Plame Wilson case met Friday on other matters while Fitzgerald spent the entire day at Luskin's office."

Yes, the Grand Jury can be convened to discuss other legal matters. Why is that an issue?

"Sources close to the case said Friday that it appeared very likely that an obstruction charge against Rove would be included with charges of perjury and lying to investigators."

The charges of perjury may have to do with Rove lying to someone other than the investigators. That may be the reason for the distinction being made between "charges of perjury and lying to investigators".

"An announcement by Fitzgerald is expected to come this week, sources close to the case said. However, the day and time is unknown."

I simply do not understand why you have a problem with this statement. Fitz works on his own schedule, something everyone following this case should know by now.

As far as how Fitz handled Libby, I recall he spent several hours in the law office representing Libby prior to announcing the charges against Libby. Doesn't look like he handled Rove any differently, IMHO.

As to your remarks about why other media outlets have not picked up on certain parts of this story, which of those MSM stooges wants to be first to report this major blow against the Necon Junta?

You seem more interested in attacking the veracity of Jason Leopold, and by extension, Will Pitt, then you do in trying to understand what Leopold actually wrote.

I'm quite sure MSM would fall over itself to break this story. I don't believe for one second that MSM ('cept maybe Fox) would not go to print with this out of fear.

The MSM, presumably, doesn't have the sources Jason Leopold does. I hope those sources are legit. We've seen gotchas of this nature before.

212. I hear you. Not being a lawyer I wonder why Fitz would sit on a GJ vote
and not move the GJ into a courtroom to hand up the indictment. Why would he put it in his brief case and go off to visit Rove's lawyers? I don't get that.

Handing up the indictment wouldn't really prevent Rove from striking a plea bargain. Indeed, it seems to me once Rove _is_ indicted the pressure will be even greater for Rove to cop a plea.

Maybe some legal eagle can explain whether the reported choreography has any similarity with usual practice and/or Fitzgerald's previous behaviors.

213. Here's my take:
Edited on Sat May-13-06 06:09 PM by Patsy Stone
The 15 hours was over several days. At least half a day was spent yesterday at the lawyer's office.

That filing had been in the works for a while. The information was requested by Libby's lawyers on May 5: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x1174620

There were sealed indictments already. He got that earlier and went to Rove's lawyer's to discuss them all over time (15 hours worth). Yesterday, he told them they had a day to decide whether or not to make a plea. It's now up to Fitz to make the formal announcement. That's what the world is waiting for. Either that, or for Rove to step down. But he already said he's not going to until the indictments are revealed. Thus, the ball is in Fitz's court.

My .02. And I reserve the right to be wrong. :)

244. Perjury and lying to investigators are not the same thing. Perjury is
lying while under oath. Lying to fed investigators during the course of an investigation, while not under oath, is also a crime. (Martha Stewart didn't serve time in prison for perjury as I recall but for lying to fed investigators.) Rove lied to fed investigators in fall 2003 and subsequently lied in his testimony to the grand jury.

...the top levels of the U. S. Government. I recall Watergate, Iran-Contra, and the Starr Inquisition as the only previous cases that merited a Special Prosecutor, or a prosecutor with powers equivalent to a Special Prosecutor.

Given what we know about the NeoCon Junta, I would imagine that Fitz has been very deliberate at each step in the process to be absolutely sure all of his ducks were in a row and quacking in unison.

203. perhaps they met to discuss Cheney's notes:

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/12774274/site/newsweek/

May 13, 2006 - The role of Vice President Dick Cheney in the criminal case stemming from the outing of White House critic Joseph Wilson's CIA wife is likely to get fresh attention as a result of newly disclosed notes showing that Cheney personally asked whether Wilson had been sent by his wife on a "junket" to Africa.

270. No one else is touching this story, but why?
not even repeating on their own blogs, except dailykos where it has been diaried, but no one is leading with it. Same thing with yesterdays article by Leopold.

Huffington Post isn't touching this either, nor BuzzFlash, nor Drudge (which necessarily doesn't mean a thing.)

But none of the major lefty blogs are going with this. Exclusive or not, this would have spread like wildfire and repeated and analyzed unless there was a huge amount of skepticism and caution surrounding Leopold or his sources.

I want to believe DESPARATELY, but this is extremely different from the Libby indictment when it seemed to explode everywhere that Thursday night last October.

What gives here?

Here's a curious clue (12+ / 0-)
Recommended by:pontificator, gorlim, cookiesandmilk, highacidity, badlands, mayan, julied, Scout Finch, lmllebrown, michele2, nieman, Cory Bantic
as to whether the ax will be dropped really soon.

Yesterday on the Breaking: Rove To Be Indicted diary, I made a comment about a scheduled speech that Rove was to make to the The American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research (AEI) on Monday, May 15, 2006.

So, out of curiousity I just went to the AEI and there is no scheduled event for Monday, May 15th on any of their pages that I could find.

I guess Rove called them to say he was going to be busy getting some affairs in order, so he needed to cancel.

:::snicker, snicker:::

But still. . I've seen this people take down Dan Rather with my own eyes. My experience is to see the second source

It is on ice as I speak. Sipping a Budweiser in pre-celebration of the indictment. Monday when Rove is indicted, I open the bubbly. However, I'm saving the best stuff, Laurent-Perrier Grande Siècle, for when Bush is led away from the White House in handcuff. That just may happen by the end of the year the way things are going.

His stories have always been accurate, so much so, that people are blind to the truth.

Let me just say that I have never been known as one who spills my candy in the lobby, but Friday was a very long day AND Karl is guilty as sin AND this grand jury hates evil doers as much as I do - so you can draw your own conclusions! Please allow me to go back to enjoying my romantic picnic. ;)

Have a great weekend.

last opportunity to get someone to cop a plea before the indictment goes public. (I can't cite a source at the moment and the attorneys on board can address that. But please be kind. I bruise easily. lol.)

Today's article doesn't state that the indictment was sealed but Leopold's Friday article stated that the indictment would be sealed. No explanation why it would be sealed, but that's what the article said, FWIW.

TalkLeft (Jeralyn Merritt) speculates that the 15 hours were spent trying to reach a plea agreement and then that the 24 hours notice was given when the talks failed to reach a deal. http://talkleft.com/new_archives/014833.html

Regardless of the merits of Leopold's sources and the info they've provided, it seems today's article was rushed to print (so to speak) and could have been clearer. JMO.

428. Bob Cesca: Truthout Reporting That Karl Rove Was Indicted
I haven't been able to find additional confirmation of this, but Jason Leopold at Truthout is reporting that Karl Rove was indicted yesterday on charges of perjury and lying to investigators.

Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald spent more than half a day Friday at the offices of Patton Boggs, the law firm representing Karl Rove. During the course of that meeting, Fitzgerald served attorneys for former Deputy White House Chief of Staff Karl Rove with an indictment charging the embattled White House official with perjury and lying to investigators related to his role in the CIA leak case, and instructed one of the attorneys to tell Rove that he has 24 hours to get his affairs in order, high level sources with direct knowledge of the meeting said Saturday morning."

So that pretty much caps off a stellar week for the Bush administration. And the president is going to be speaking about -- what was that? -- immigration? That's rich.

...

UPDATE: I want to reiterate that I haven't seen any additional confirmation of Leopold's story. It's now been more than five hours since the Truthout dispatch went out. But if Leopold's story is accurate, well then... cool.

444. LOL - Talk about hanging one's career on ONE story....
... depending on which way this turns out...

There are only so many "stays of decision" that maneuvers like "depends on what the meaning of 24 hours is" will get get you...

Ballsy! :)

While Im still holding out hope that this pans out, we are all human and we all make mistakes.

To cover up those mistakes is a Bush move. We are better than that.

Besides, its well archived and to delete it would only increase any perceived damage.

457. Careful! This could be a Rove ploy...
Rove working it so he would be indicted could be a masterful plot by that genius Rove, the reason and outcome we won't know about till we see Rove laughing at us.

Or, it could be simply Rove's crimes catching up with him.

I vote the second one.

466. NICE FANTASY...NOW BACK TO REALITY....
Karl Rove has just re-painted the entire left-wing blogosphere as a bunch of know-nothing bullshit artists that let their hate of a great man, get in the way of the fact that George W. Bush is one of the greatest Presidents in this country's history....

Fellas, (and ladies)

Keep your noses clean and your powder dry....the indictments will come when they come...

471. Perhaps TruthOut doesn't believe in retractions
The grand jury is meeting today, and perhaps on Friday. If an indictment is returned today, Jason Leopold's legion of fans will say that he was right all along and that TruthOut beat the MSM to the story. If no indictment is returned today, they will say that Fritz is giving Rove time to settle his affairs.

Now, as to Leopold's plagiarism story...

474. Let's visit "settle his affairs". That makes no sense unless he would be
hauled off to jail or prison immediately. Rove will have enough time to "settle his affairs" up to and through the trial.

Meanwhile, even if he had to "settle his affairs" today, he's going to be on Capital Hill arm twisting for the Shrub's immigration plan.
