"No one can terrorize a whole nation, unless we are all his accomplices"
Edited on Sat May-13-06 04:24 PM by Roland99
"No one can terrorize a whole nation, unless we are all his accomplices." - Edward R. Murrow

For too long this nation has been an accomplice to the destruction of itself.

For too long the Constitution has been under attack in ways even Sen. McCarthy would never have dared to imagine.

For too long the propaganda of fear has ruled the airwaves, chanting "9/11! 9/11! 9/11!"

But no more.

The end of an administration

Remember that image for that image above represents the darkest hour of democracy in this nation since it was under attack from within almost 150 years ago. Darker than the days of McCarthy when lives and businesses were destroyed under a campaign of fear. Days dark enough to have caused the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent lives in a war waged in the name of this nation's security.

But no more.

The tide has turned.

That which has been known as "Bush's Brain" has now officially been indicted for charges of perjury and lying to investigators.

The tide has turned.

The mighty American media which has turned into that which Edward Murrow lamented as isolating us from the truth in its attempt to entertain us to gather ratings for ad revenue. Money spoke louder than truth and fairness.

But no more.

The American media has been beaten by a new force: the public. The public has arisen and the truth has been found. In the form of the internet with its blogs, discussion forums, and independent journalists. Names such as Kos, Leopold, Alexandrovna, Atrios (Black) have risen above the muck of infotainment and provided the nation and the world with information. Information that has spread and been used to fight back against the powers and their war of propaganda.

The Vice President of the United States was the one responsible for the most egregious attack on Fourth Amendment rights since those days of McCarthy. And this is not the first time he has done so. His efforts to wage war on the world in the name of whatever idol he worships resulted in the travesties of Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib. The flag of freedom and democracy was trampled and ripped to shreds in the process leaving a shell of a republic that must work for decades to repair from within, straddled now with massive amounts of debt incurred so that they could wage their war of ideologies. They still claim to have been right in their actions and many believed.

But no more.

2. Only the SCARED say SCARED!
I've always thought that I'd worry about the Terraists when I saw them on my turf. Little did I know they were hiding in my telephone!

3. They're hiding in plain sight in the White House.
The very White House where Lincoln, FDR, JFK and others resided and presided.

4. I never really was an accomplice to the fear-mongering
Edited on Sat May-13-06 04:36 PM by SeattleGirl
But I know that for the longest time, the majority of people in this country were. Part of it was reasonable, in that we had been attacked, but most of it was NOT reasonable. Most of the fear people were feeling was being fed by this Administration: "9/11, 9/11, 9/11, terra, terra, terra." But people ARE waking up. People are starting to see the people in this Administration for what they are: liars, thieves and murderers. More and more people are saying, "I will no longer be a party to this."

Could we be attacked again? Yes. But walking around in a trumped up state of fear, cowering before this evil cabal, isn't going to stop another attack. All it will do is lead to further erosion of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. We the People are waking up. We the People are saying "No more!"

Excellent post, Roland 99. Recommended.

5. Thank you. And I will admit I was an accomplice for a while.
I've written things and said things of which I am utterly ashamed to have done.

But no more.

The question now is: What person or party has the courage to do the right thing and shed the coat of greed? To shun the lobbyists and special interests? To actually represent his or her constituents?

6. Roland, this reads like a call to arms! Pacifist arms, weapons like truth
and passion and moving forward in spite of fear. Thank you for this stirring reminder. I think that a bit of a comparison can be made between Murrow and Colbert. Both brilliant men with rock solid values and a way with words, as well as the skill to use the public media to inspire and confront each can be seen as turning points. Once the nakedness of the emperor has been so publicly declared, the whole illusion is shattered.
Here is to the magnificent shatterers! :toast:

all of the scandals and lies have chipped away enough to let some truth and light break free.

11. Here's what I posted in another thread of a similar vein:
"This is the rub. No one can take our freedom & liberties from us BUT us. Horrible acts of terrorism affect us deeply, but they have no power to actually change us as a people. I guess, though, that is why they call it terrorism; some will be so terrified they will willingly hand over their civil liberties hoping someone will keep them "safe".

How ironic, that repubs view us as the the weak ones when they are the ones to throw away everthing that makes us American in the name of "fighting the terrorists". Then again, irony escapes republicans."

12. Makes me seethe every time I see this bumper sticker: Freedom Isn't Free
Well, suppose it's not. Too bad the price for freedom is....well....freedom.

14. The price of freedom will be our all-out effort and funding to win
(and protect) the elections. This will include canvassing, speaking out, funding, and vigilance.

16. Don't Bail Out On Democratic Candidates!
I don't know about any polls, but I'll bet that many Americans still believe that there is a connection between OBL and the Country that Shrub insisted had a connection with September 11. Many Americans have not read the 911 Commission Report or seen the video "Uncovered: The Truth behind the War" from MoveOn. And many Americans still proudly wave the Confederate Flag and have a very high ratio of billboards that show a Light Brown haired White Jesus from the Mid-east who will save them from eternal hell fire.

Unfortunately the process of obtaining progressive goals like not allowing Terry Schiavo to go peacefully (and remember Terry was kept alive for over a decade) is a rather difficult unless you can convince most Americans from a swing-vote state that that is not something that will send them directly to eternal hell fire. How could Terry Schiavo have been kept alive for such a long time if it wasn't for a public that is hardly homogenous in it's thoughts.

It is obtaining the most votes from these swing vote states that helps a candidate to win a general election.

We are the Big Tent Party! We cannot succeed by not voting for a candidate simply because he or she is not progressive enough!

I can't not vote for a candidate because the don't get me the house with the white picket fence. I'll settle for the friggin' door to a house with a white picket fence if that's what it takes to get someone voted in on a general election!

Democratic leaders fight very hard to achieve goals. I watch them on C-Span don't take the idea that anything these leaders are doing is a picnic! It's a process, and the American public needs to be convinced: They need to know why the Generals wanted Rummy out they need to be informed to make an idea popular before a leader can really move on an issue that might cost his or her reelection. It's politics and it stinks!!

If you want to put your money where your mouth is give to a specific candidate who can win in a general election!

17. As long as it's a candidate that actually wants to represent constituents
and not corporate and special interests.

Were it, say, Hillary vs. McCain, I'll be writing in Bugs Bunny.
