20% are Mexican?
I heard on the Randi Rhodes Show today that of all the undocumented people/wokers in the USA, only 20% are Mexican.

Is there a link/source to verify this?
Does she mean all that come across the southern border; be they Central or South American?
How would these statistics be gathered?

If this is true then it is an eye opener.
I want to believe her, it sounds correct, but I need more detail.

Thanks

1. I would guess that a huge number are central or south American.
I know of lots of Salvadorans, Nicaraguans, etc.

But percentage-wise, I can't help.

2. I wish she would have given more details...
...but every host can't be like Thom Hartmann, I guess.

3. I've met five people I've known to be undocumented.
None were from Mexico. One was from Ghana, one was from Columbia, and three were from the UK.

4. That's contrary to other reliable estimates
Pew Hispanic Center report, based on CPS and other Federal data sets, estimates 57 % Mexican, 22% other Central or South American, remainder from other parts of the world.

Maybe she was quoting some other stat, like percent who came here in the past year or number who are children?

7. my wife teaches in a lower-income area
populated largely by immigrants (many probably undocumented). She has taught many kids from Central America (as well as Bosnia, Cambodia, Puerto Rico etc), but I do not remember her having taught any Mexican kids. So that seems consistent with what you report Randi says.

This area (in Massachusetts) is having a big problem with the MS-13 gang, and it originated in El Salvador.
