This morning's faculty meeting (ie, the uninformed public)
Or maybe it's the apathetic public, or just your everyday Bushbots...

Many were already sitting at tables waiting for the meeting to begin. They were all going on about American Idol last night, which I know nothing about (I'm sorry, I'm not into today's pop culture). So, I had to ask to the large crew, "Did any of you know about the NSA wiretapping, and that your names are in a government database and they may be listening to your private phone calls?"

-Birds chirping-. And finally, from ones who may have heard something about it, "Big deal, Garrett." You see, I'm one of those Bush-haters.

The difference between liberals and conservatives isn't necessarily political idealogy. It's now about whether you are informed or blissfully in the dark. Today's conservatives just seem to be whistling past the graveyard...

1. No, they're whistling as the grave is dug in front of them.

7. The conservatives don't see the banana peel placed in front.

2. Are you a new teacher?
Many teachers are very conservative, which is funny because the wingers are always calling them liberals. Even more surprising is that many teachers do not vote, are not registered, and have no idea who their representative is. I discovered this little-known fact while going around with petitions for Clark in 2004.

As a veteran teacher, my advice is stick to light stuff in faculty meetings or you will be labeled as a trouble-maker. You are not going to convert anyone in the faculty lounge.

3. 20 years in the business, now a counselor
Very conservative community. I keep telling them that they are voting against their own best interests when voting Republican here in Texas. They still go about doing it, even though everytime our legislature meets, they find a new way to screw us. I can present all the data to them, but they just toss it aside. It really is mind-boggling.

4. With all due respect, that really isn't true.
My parents and stepfather were all teachers for forty years (retired now); I grew up surrounded by elementary and secondary teachers and a smattering of college professors. I've known and interacted with far more teachers than I can count, including those at my son's schools, and in all my life I think I've known a total of maybe three conservative teachers altogether, and those were moderates.

The vast majority were registered to vote, kept themselves very well informed, and voted in each and every election. I'm sure that isn't the case with every teacher and in all areas, but I really don't believe most are uninformed conservatives who don't vote.

5. I'm sorry, but I'm talking about my campus
And yes, I can guarantee you that at least 3/4 vote Republican. It has to do mainly because of the region I live in.

6. Amen and amen again
You'll find your high school teachers more liberal. And the elementary teachers are sometimes quite wonderful and sweet and clueless. I know that is stereotyping, but it's true. Every school has its cadre of old hippy types like me that remember the open classroom and now we are in the test-taking environment and it is SO hard for us.

I am fortunate that in my center, most are liberals.
