8. Hayden saying he WANTED to notify Congress.
He says it was important to him to brief the leadership - if there was to be a dialogue beyond that, he said he was open to do it if that were the decision. Keeps referring to the Constitution. :eyes:

25. Wolf, after showing other stories, says
that they are covering this very important hearing about the future of US intelligence - then goes to commercial. I don't get CSpan 3, and I'm getting more info from Amy Goodman on Democracy Now about the hearing than from CNN - and she filmed this morning before the hearing.

Now CNN is interviewing Lott rather than showing the hearing. Very tired of corporate news.

He opposed the initial program because he did not think it was legal, then he is convinced by the WH lawyers, take their opinion to his own lawyers, who tells him its legal, and he does not ask for their opinion in writing?

I thought the first rule of government was CYA, meaning you get everything in writing.

Pat Roberts may have heard all about the illegal warrantless wiretapping and datamining offshore in Global Information Group Ltd's operation combined with ChoicePoint data, but if no one speaks up and alerts Congress about the illegalities, our Constitution is buried with Jimmie Hoffa...

and I want that discussion taking place NOT in camera but out in open session.

97. I could've sworn...

that they reported yesterday that Bush Ad. briefed the full committees on the NSA program. If Hayden's changing that now to 4-6 people, that means they weren't telling the truth about how many people were present at the briefing on Wed.

Wed., May 17 - "NSA to Brief Lawmakers on Spy Program"

"AP - The Bush administration will brief the full House and Senate Intelligence Committees in Congress on the National Security Agency’s controversial surveillance activities, reversing course after five months. The sessions scheduled for Wednesday afternoon on Capitol Hill were to be led by the NSA’s director, Lt. Gen. Keith Alexander, and were sure to focus on the ultra-secret agency’s efforts to monitor domestic calls when one party is overseas and suspected of terrorism, as well as the agency’s efforts to collect records on ordinary Americans’ calls.

The briefings were coming less than 24 hours ahead of the opening of confirmation hearings for Gen. Michael Hayden, nominated to head the CIA. He was set to appear Thursday before the Senate Intelligence Committee."

94. I am sick of this "privacy vs. security" thing.
This is not a tug-of-war. You do not pull one end of the string and come up just that much short on the other end. There is no teeter-totter here.

Our rights are inalienable. We are guaranteed them No Matter What. That's what freedom is about. We do not give them up to feel a little safer.
