At a time of great national unity against a real threat, an opportunist regime took the opening to cheerlead and fear-monger their way (with the help of cherry-picked intelligence) to wage a war of choice with the goal of enriching: themselves, the oil cartels, the defense industry, private contractors and assorted and sundry others with ties to the administration.
I posted this as a response to a thread in Editorials and then decided that it's the best explanation I have ever given myself for why the war is wrong. It's wrong because we never acknowledged why we were REALLY fighting it in the first place. That's why Bush is so eager to say "the past is past" when pressed on the reasons for the war. That is why their justifications shift so many times. It wasn't about Terrorism. It wasn't about National Security. It wasn't about bringing Democracy to the world. It was about making some rich people richer.
