Santorum stands firm on claim that report backs prewar threat
By Chris Mondics
Inquirer Washington Bureau
Pennsylvania political page
WASHINGTON - Sen. Rick Santorum (R., Pa.) insisted yesterday that a just-released intelligence report proves that Saddam Hussein had weapons that in the hands of terrorists could have become weapons of mass destruction.

The partially declassified report, put together by a Defense Department agency, revealed that American forces have recovered about 500 rounds of chemical-weapons shells containing "degraded" mustard or sarin nerve gas in Iraq.

"Is 500 rounds a serious threat?" Santorum asked. "I would make the argument that we had reached the threshold. The concern with chemical and biological weapons was not so much that he would use them against us but that they would secrete out to terrorist organizations for them to use."

But the report, while noting Hussein's leftover chemical weapons could fall into the hands of terrorists, does nothing to undercut the assertion of U.S. weapons inspector Charles Duelfer in November 2004 that Hussein had no active chemical weapons program at the time U.S. troops invaded in 2003. It suggested the weapons had been produced before the 1991 Gulf War.

5. do we think santorum is the RNC sacrificial lamb?
I mean, could they know he's toast anyways, and are asking him to look too foolish to be elected, but still catapult the false propaganda, hoping it entrenches in the shallow ditch the loyal 32% call a mind?

7. If you notice the White House is deafly silent on this. However, I am
sure they are letting him do this and are saying let him take a shot at it not giving up on the race but basically in desperation to try anything to win.

10. Yeah, I am curious to see the next poll on him. 18 points down before
this dumb stunt. What's your guess after the next idiot's poll?

Also, I don't understand how or why the dems can't make something out of the republicans politicizing the Iraq war now. Do these dems go to idiot school themselves? They can't bring anything to the forefront and show the American people where they are in the right and the republicans are out for nobody but themselves. Even, the minimum wage bill, vote down the minimum wage bill and vote themselves a pay raise. If they were going to do that, they should at least in all human decency, not voted themselves a raise.

11. Not that I expect it, but there isn't the slightest bit of sincerity
in his concern about this. They could care less about whether or not the WMD claim makes any sense, just that it make headlines. He is very irresponsible.
