7. federal indictment
A federal indictment against seven men revealed Friday details of what the government said was a plan intended to “kill all the devils we can.”
The mission was intended to be “as good or greater than 9/11″ beginning with the destruction of Chicago’s Sears Tower, according to court documents obtained Friday by CNN.

4. There's a similar group in my DC neighborhood.
They practice military drills and Tai Chi
on the playground down the street. Evidently,
this group helps the elderly and the homeless,
and they formed this group in order to avoid
drugs, alcohol, and a life of crime.

They're all Black, BTW.

Terrorists?

Not until the FBI infiltrates and instigates.

Hm.

9. According to Stanley’s sister
According to Stanley’s sister, the group, which formed about a year ago, called itself the Seas of David. The 40 to 50 members consider themselves ‘’soldiers of God'’ and are against the war in Iraq. Like soldiers, they incorporate discipline into their daily lives: exercise, no drinking, no drugs and no meat.
Last year, Marlene Phanor said, her brother and other members of the group drove to Chicago…
‘’They said it was a karate school,'’ Benjamin Williams, 17, said of the warehouse. “They used to be out around 11 at night, practicing like they were in the military or something . . . push-ups, jumping jacks and jumping over chairs.'’
Another neighbor said: “They would be gone all day and come back at night to the warehouse to sleep. They sold shampoo and hair grease on the street.'’

24. OMG! I'm reading the indictment
The fake "al qaeda" guy had to supply them with...

A digital camera (to take pictures of targets)
a rental van to get there
a memory card for the camera

26. On or about May 24, 2006 NARSEAL BATISTE told the 'al Qaeda representative' that he was experiencing delays because of various problems within his organization but that he wanted to continue his mission and maintain his relationship with al Qaeda.

They had no money
they had no means

34. Quite the contrast to the William Krar case
which

  • was barely covered by the media, particularly the cable channels.
  • was barely discussed by the Justice Dept.
  • was only discovered by accident, by someone who mistakenly received mail meant from an associate of Krar's and reported it, even though Krar was known and had even been stopped with weapons, handcuffs, etc in his car before.
  • was a case in which Krar and associates had accumulated on their own "half a million rounds of ammunition, 65 pipebombs and briefcases that could be detonated by remote control, as well as 800g of almost pure sodium cyanide." http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/0,12271,1118162,00.html
  • only Krar, his partner and one other person were tried and sentenced, even though investigators believed others were involved.
  • received no public follow-up about this that I have seen.
  • they were tried and given light sentences, around 11 years for Krar and 5-6 for his partner.

Key difference?
Krar and his group were white, rightwing extremists. That doesn't fit the profile of the fear they want to spread.

36. Plus, that one doesn't work to promote their "need" to spy on us
since it was a concerned citizen that led to the discovery. Instead, it highlights the way they minimize the real threat from racist, rightwing hate groups.

I noticed in my morning paper that the terra story was next to the story about the government going after Americans' bank records without warrants. I doubt it will be long before we hear them trying to use this to justify illegal wiretaps, monitoring various groups (including Quakers, but seemingly not ones like Krar's), and probing even farther and with less oversight or judicial control. They needed something purely domestic, but far away from memories of the Oklahoma bombing (which wouldn't fit since since the above methods weren't proposed after that and they were also white and therefore not "other") to cover for why they want to really invade Americans rights.

Et voila, this happens.
