More facts and thoughts on the Miami Seven case
This is from an e-mail I received, which lays it out pretty nicely. RIM:

Another Weapon of Mass Distraction

The Bush administration recently arrested seven (7) Black men, accusing them of planning acts of terror. But most people, including top brass in the FBI itself, think these guys were not much more than amateur wannabes who posed no real danger to anyone, except themselves. The raid made a big media splash while taking attention away from other developments. Was this another Bush Weapon of Mass Distraction? You decide...

* Damaging Real News. Did you hear that the Bush Administration has been spying on millions of financial records, using the SWIFT service, based in Belgium, not subject to US privacy laws, which manages transactions between banks (when you use your ATM from one bank at another bank)? Do you wonder why? The White House sent letters to several newspapers begging them not to run the story. The day before the story is run- a story sure to anger many people still sore about the warrant less wiretapping story- the arrests are made on shaky evidence.

* TV Time. The raid was timed to happen at the exact same time that FBI Director Robert Mueller was on the Larry King show. It was a made for TV event.

* "Militaristic" Look. The media made a big deal about the group's "militaristic" look, implying that they were well trained and organized. But, according to the actual indictment, they group members could not afford their own boots or gear, so they FBI bought it for them.

* Pictures of Targets. In the biggest piece of evidence against them, the group apparently took pictures of several Miami area building which would be targets. But, according to the indictment, the group did not have money for either the cameras or the car to go to the sites. So, the FBI bought them the cameras and rented the car. Did the FBI also tell them which pictures to take so they could arrest them?

* Incomplete List. In another big piece of evidence, the group's leader submitted a list of what the group would need to accomplish the mission of blowing up several buildings. According to the indictment, he asked for more boots, guns, money and other supplies. What was missing? There were no explosives or supplies which could be used to make explosives. What were they going to do, kick the FBI building down with their new boots?

* No Weapons Found. Not one weapon was found during the raid. Just how dangerous were these guys?

* Amateurs. Deputy FBI Director John Pistole said the group's plan was "more aspirational than operational" and many have described them as amateurs, who did the exact opposite of what most known terrorist cells actually do. They could not even afford to get boots and did not know that you had to have explosives to blow up a building. These guys probably could not have robbed a convenience store much less committed acts of terror greater than 9/11.

* Real Terrorists I. While the FBI dropped the hammer on the amateurs, the US is harboring real live terrorists. Luis Posada is an international fugitive widely believed to be the mastermind behind the 1976 bombing of a Cuban airliner, killing 73 passengers. After breaking out of prison in Venezuela, the CIA hired him to do their dirty work in Nicaraguan dirty wars of the 1980s. Posada was living free in the US until he held a press conference forcing the US to arrest him- for immigration violations, not for terrorism. Bush refuses to either extradite or try Posada for the bombings.

* Real Terrorists II. Orlando Bosch is a Posada accomplice who defended the bombing of the plane during an April 2006 TV interview. When asked if he felt guilty about killing 6 young female fencers on the plane, he responded "No, because in the end those who were there had to know that they were cooperating with the tyranny in Cuba." When asked outright if he did it, he said if he denied it he would be accused of lying about the details he provided, and "If I tell you that I was involved, I will be inculpating myself." Bosch is a free man living in a house in Miami, Florida.

* Real Terrorists III. On the day of the raid, the Miami Herald printed a front page article in which Jose Antonia Llama, a former board member of the powerful Cuban American National Foundation (CANF), a government recognized non-profit-organization, stated that the board of directors had a sub-committee who bought weapons, boats and a helicopter and trained people to launch attacks on a sovereign nation (Cuba). These are actual terrorists. The story did not make national news. Llama and the other board members named continue to live in Miami. No arrests have been made.

* Real Terrorists IV. Did we mentioned that people arrested with no weapons, no plans and no capacity to carry out attacks are Black, some with dreadlocks, and the people with weapons, plans and military experience are all white/hispanic, some with business suits? Do you feel safer yet?

* Justification? Will this raid be used to justify warrant less wiretaps and violation of civil liberties to a gullible public? Will the arrests make the public think they are safer, distracting them from the fact that there are real terrorists living in the US and the "war" is not really going all that well?

2. I think W has cried wolf once too many times.
I have been fascinated that "our government" would arrest these homeless people without a pot to pee in and hold a national news conference by Alberto indicating they had stopped a terrorist attack.

Conservatives must also realize it's a farce. They are strangely silent about it.

Just another example of this administration wanting to change the subject concerning their horrible ineptness. This one backfired.

3. And NYC had...
three driveby shootings this Sunday. Maybe more, but that's what was on the 11PM news. So, do we really care about phony terror cells or should we maybe worry about the day-to-day slaughter on our streets?

Ashcroft may have been a jerk, but Gonzo is making me nostalgic for him. Ashcroft had some measure of decency about him, however small perhaps, that stopped him from being such a craven, lying tool. Setting up this bunch of losers as "terrorists" is as cynical as it gets.

6. Can hardly wait for W/Alberto to warn us as the danger the
Miami 7 contained. Probably like the recently found WMD's and all the rest of the tripe broadcast by the fanatical right wingers.

7. Great points delivered.I've bookmarked your post for future reference.
Bush and his cohorts top themselves every day. Don't know how much the country can take. The Miami 7 stunt is simply contemptible.

8. You left out one of my favorite Cuban terrorists - Santiago Alvarez
Oh I know, there are too many to list them all, but this is the one that the M&M should been all over like stink on shit if they were really interested in exposing the terrorists, who have lived in this country under the protection of the US government for decades.

Alvarez was already suspected of smuggling Luis Posada into the US on his yacht a couple of years ago. Even though the M$M did report that Posada had shown up in Miami and was wanted for acts of terrorism, the FBI and Immigration ignored him. That was until he got silly and Alvarez helped him set up that 'news conference' in a Hialeah warehouse. Then the US had no choice but to arrest Posada and make him shut his god damn big mouth.

Well, well, turns out that Mr Alvaraez himself got busted last Nov. Apparently, Alvarez and his pals still have wet dreams about getting rid of Castro and were planning Return to Bay of Pigs. Alvarez apparently is very rich man at this point in his life and owns a big condo complex up in Broward County. The residents got alarmed when he started moving in all these old Cuban guys to get ready for BP2. One of their favorite pasttimes was running up and down the stairs all day and doing calisthenics to get in shape for their mission.

Ol' Alvarez finally blew it, when he asked an accomplice, who turned out to be an FBI informant, to deliver a cooler full of weapons to his Broward condo. There the FBI found Alvarez's weapons cache. According to the judge, there was enough weapons, including C4 explosives to cause a major bloodbath.

So where's the M$M when a real terrorist, with real weapons gets busted right here in FL? Nowhere to be found, of course. Where's Gonzalez and Mueller? Why no big press conference? Why was the Liberty Seven big news but this story gets buried? Because BushCo & the M$M could care less about real terrorism. They would rather ruin innocent people's lives because they needed a new distraction and of course young black men exercising are a lot more dangerous then old Cuban men acting out their final fantasy.

9. but, but without this story
Soledad O'Brien wouldn't have been able to link Rastafarians and Black Muslims as possible national threats.

Yeah, I've got nothing to defend the raid or the media whores covering it.

10. More on Posada (from today's Miami Herald):
Posada's CIA ties uncovered in papers

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/14901750.htm

Details have emerged about Cuban exile militant Luis Posada Carriles' CIA links 40 years ago in South Florida. One revelation: his tie to the agency's Miami bureau.

<snip>

"Nearly four years after the failed CIA-backed Bay of Pigs invasion, Cuban exile militant Luis Posada Carriles continued to work for the spy agency, according to CIA files released to The Miami Herald.

His job: ''Training Branch Instructor'' for its Miami station, which then was responsible for intelligence-gathering missions into Cuba. He was part of the covert JMWAVE -- the code name for the CIA Miami bureau, which at the time operated within the University of Miami.

His tenure: March 26, 1965, to July 11, 1967.

The revelation of Posada's ties to the CIA's operations in Miami was contained in documents requested by The Miami Herald as part of a Freedom of Information Act request.

Although some of Posada's CIA links were known previously, the CIA files released to the newspaper this month add detail about the Cuban militant's connections to America's storied and controversial spy agency.

The information comes at a time that Posada, currently detained in El Paso, Texas, is seeking approval of his U.S. citizenship application on the ground that he served the CIA and the U.S. military."
