"US of A: Love it or leave it commie"...a question for DU
I invariably hear this from people. The problem is, I really do want to leave the US and see the world, perhaps live somewhere where a trip to the doctor doesn't lead to bankruptcy, maybe not have Christian Republicans running everything and bitching about not having any power...but I have no money to move.

My question:

If you are in the "I can't love it so I'd rather leave it" crowd, would you be in favor of a one-time US govt grant to assist you in relocating to another country? If so, why. If not, why not.

No value judgments and no flame please("you suck for running away", "stay and fight the fascists", and the like). I'm just testing a weird idea that came to me last night while waiting for Family Guy to come on.

13. Hypothetically...
Are you suggesting that Republicans wouldn't pay to get rid of their political opposition? Wouldn't this be a lot cheaper than stealing elections?

24. Guess not...they've already spent the money to steal elections....
Edited on Tue Jun-27-06 05:19 AM by jus_the_facts
.... musta been a LOT cheaper to instigate that tactic with our tax dollars...besides they lose much more tax monies if they let you leave for good....can't have that!

2. I don't think that when they say "or leave it"
they mean that they would be willing to pay for you to do so. Like saying "get a job." Doesn't mean they are going to give you one.

But what if you don't love America in her current state but don't want to leave? What if you prefer to try to fix it?

Here's my slogan: "America. Help us fix it or shut the fuck up."

Course, if someone did want to pay my way to a life in another country, that would be a nifty option. Still don't think I would go, though.

3. T'would be nice. I'd be gone in a flash if I could afford it.
I could even adapt to saying "eh" or "blimey" or "alors".

17. Yeah...
Spell everything "our" instead of "or"

"Aluminium" instead of "aluminum"

Start eating Marmite

The only thing keeping me here is abject poverty.

4. Response...
This what I tell them.

If YOU don't like people freely expressing their opinion...
If YOU don't like letting citizens know that their rights are getting pissed on...
If YOU don't like that this country is for anyone who wants it, no matter the size of their bank account...
If YOU don't like people getting upset that we're pawning our troops...

YOU LEAVE! Because the Constitution doesn't want you!

And take your Bible with the post-it notes on the pages of cherry-picked quotes with you!

That's just me though.

6. I Also Would Love To Leave But...
I am over 50, have a technical degree, and 35 years of work experience. I would love to immigrate to Canada. Since I cannot do that, 2nd best is to convince my state to secede to Canada along with any other blue states that want to. We would benefit Canada greatly with our ports, industries and citizens, and they would enhance us because we would no longer have to contend with an unwanted war, we would gain health care (as well as help pay for it with our tax base) and their education system is better as well. They are just more humane toward their citizens in general, with their prison system more just and their welfare system much kinder.

My 2 cents

Cat In Seattle
P.S. It would be the delight of my heart to leave these theocratic, hypocritical, wingnut Repigs just waving in the wind. They have the highest and most heartless poverty issues, they are the greediest and most regressive tax stealers around, they are lazy corporate welfare queens, and they force their religion down people's throats by legislating their morality on the rest of us. They deserve to find out what life would be like if they lived in their "little Nirvanas" all by themselves without assuming We The People be the ones to line some "no-bid contract" rich man's pocket that they refuse to help pay for.

GRRRRRRRRRRRR!

16. Obviously a western/first world country of your choice...
We could sell it as a "Spread freedom" effort...instead of slaughtering millions, we just send our most liberal citizens abroad to represent the US's non-theocratic side.

9. My response is that this is MY HOME
and that there are a lot of people just like me and WE LIVE HERE TOO, and none of us is going to leave, so whatever cretin has just parroted that particular bumper sticker is going to have to come to terms with that.

Or if they are gonna complain, at least they can enlist and go to Iraq in stead of acting like big-mouthed cowards.

edit: Go! See the world! There are many places on Earth besides the USA.

11. Leave the US
I am retired and I have to stay and fight. First for my daughter and grandson. Second because if I don't there will be no social security for me or them.

15. They believe in spying on citizens, controlling the media, torturing
in secret prisons and they have the nerve to call us Commies? Give me a fucking break, that is what I tell them.

This is America. Land of the FREE, home of the brave. If they don't like the "free" part, then they need to move someplace where their restricted desires and lifestyles are more common place....like Afghanistan.

19. "Love it or leave it" assumes the country is perfect the way it is...
That there is no class differences, no legal injustices, no need to hold anyone accountable for the lies that have transpired these past 5 years.

A great phrase for a brain-dead knee-jerk reactionary.

even made tentative plans but then realized to my core I'm an American and I always will be. America is as much apart of me as being a female I so strongly identify with being American I know I could never really leave it behind.
