I just saw "Serenity" and it F*cking ROCKS!!!
DISCLAIMER - OK, I know this belongs in the Lounge... but when I posted it there, rabrrrrrr was the only only one that replied and I KNOW there are more FireFly fans on DU than he and I...

I loved Firefly on SciFi and I was heartbroken when it was canceled. I was afeared that Serenity would be a let down, like so many movies based on TVseries-books-etc are but.... I am so glad it stayed true to the series I loved (before it was canceled by those goddamn fascists who are only after profits). The cast members were the same (thank the deity, It always pisses me off when they cast someone new) and I really think I should not be so thrilled about a movie cause it's so nerdy. (I feel like a Trekkie) I even watched the outtakes and the deleted scenes and the producer interviews and I'm watching it again with director commentary ON (Joss Weldon is a fucking genius!!)

FIREFLY FANS CHECK IN!!

7. I knew there was some reason I was drawn to
The HypnoToad!

If he digs Firefly, then he's OK in my book, no matter what others say about him. ;)

2. It was great!
My partner and I watched it this past week, then watched the entire season of "Firefly!" It is a complete shame it was canceled. I told my partner, Joss Whedon should try something new again...do an entire 2nd season on DVD and sell it in two parts! It would be unheard of! He likes doing things differently, so why not a second season of a canceled TV series on DVD? I understand that season 1 is making a killing, I bet it would be enough to finance, a second season!

and have been anxiously awaiting my Serenity CD. It came in the mail 6 hours ago and I have already watched it twice, plus the extras.

Geez, I hope they make a Serenity II, although it won't be the same with out Walsh and the Shepard.

4. Never watched the Firefly series, but I liked Serenity a lot
It was a very well-crafted movie: introduced the main characters without bogging down, got the plot moving quickly, had some very solid action sequences, and played out an interesting storyline. The actors were very much in their roles, possibly a bi-product of having played them on TV for some time, and I had no difficulty suspending disbelief through most of the movie. The script was exceptional, in that it didn't wallow in exposition for the newbs like me, yet I had no confusion as to what was happening. A rare bird, indeed.

Big   for Serenity.

6. I love that movie
My boss recommended it and, after he had recommended FRIDA, I was a bit skeptical but I saw it in theaters on the last weekend it was out then BOUGHT the series watched it twice and put the movie on my xmas list.

It is the best show never watched on television then made into the best movie.

8. Yeah. It kicked ass.
Unfortunately, there's never going to be a sequel since it bombed so horribly at the box office. Maybe if it gets good word of mouth and does well on video, there could be another film.

Sadly, I don't think that's going to happen. Joss Whedon rocks and he gets no love from the general public.

That movie kicked so much ass. The characters all seemed like real people. It was sweet, and funny, and exciting as all hell, at various times. Watching it almost felt like the first time I saw Star Wars.

13. You might check the DVDs
They're available, too, the entire series -- including three episodes which were never aired during Firefly's all-too-brief run on Fox.

14. I discovered Firefly and Serenity recently, and I'm digging it
I'm not really a big sci-fi fan, but Firefly appeals to me. I love the crime genre, and I like mixing genres in general. Plus, the whole idea of the space western has always seemed perfectly logical to me. Plus, the characters are just cool. All in all, it rocks.

Or should I say, it's shiny.

SF/Westerns produced lately.

I really hope one of the cable channels decides to resurrect Firefly. It was a really good show.

27. You know, when I first saw the trailer, I thought Mal looked familiar...
I couldn't put my finger on it. When I found out that it was based on Firefly, which I had never seen but remembered the promos for, it made more sense. Then I looked him up and found out that he used to come out on "Two Guys and a Girl," which I used to watch every now and then, and also the wrong Pvt. Ryand in "Saving Private Ryan," and then I remembered who he was.

19. The DVD is shiny! I miss my Cap'n Tightpants!
You did find the Easter Egg, right? It has the weird little commercial for the Fruit Oaty Bars. :) My favorite outtake was the one where Wash is steering thru the Reavers and Mal's yelling at him so he says "Fine! You f'n drive!" and gets up and says Jayne's line "I'll be in my bunk!" LMAO Simply awesome... Hubby and I have been saving the commentary for tomorrow night - try to spread out the yummy goodness in small portions...

That said, I am in major Joss withdrawal right now... I can't wait to see how Wonder Woman shapes up. That's what I've heard his next project is... (sigh)

You can't take my Jossverse from me... :)

20. FOX killed Firefly deliberately
Firefly and the movie Serenity are what you get when a writer and director with talent are left alone to do what they do best.

How does a show succeed when you show it out of order, show it at different times and on different nights each time it's shown?

The very fact that Firefly has fans is proof of the quality. It found a loyal audience DESPITE FOX doing it's best to kill it before it got off the ground.

And Serenity did damn well for not having ANY press.

23. The content of Firefly would be more than enough for any station to nix it
for the show is anti-fascist and anti-corporate (or anti-corporate in terms of what corporations today behave.)

Nevermind how Firefly can make normally make prostitution a more moral career... I think the episode was "Shindig" and is one of the most thought-provoking pieces ever. Many would dismiss it as "supporting prostitution therefore it's immoral." What those fools don't realize is that Firefly is not like Family Guy. The former turns controversial subjects into true, non-preachy discussions (so I'm happy Rick Berman, Ronald D Moore, et al were not involved!!). The latter is just gross-out filth that people think is brilliant for some reason.

22. 9.75 out of 10! And its talk of fascism and such makes it a good allegory.
The movie clearly takes scenes from no less than six episodes of "Blake's 7", but given how this guy could take a show decrying totalitarianism with a group of heroes who in of themselves are criminals - from the 1970s - and update it so brilliantly, I sure as hell won't complain!

I know some people won't see the movie because there are no "big names" in it. Whew boy... Most 'big names' are walking egos. The actors in serenity are ACTORS. Good ones. And most of them have long lists of tv and film works... to bias a movie solely because egomaniacs like Tom Cruise and Bruce Willis aren't in them utter fools.

If ANYTHING I could nitpick, I'd replace Mr Universe's private station (ugh) with an Alliance communication center (ala B7). This would not have jolted the storyline one iota. It's still reasonably great as it is, of course... :) But Joss had to make it "big hollywood fluff" in one way, I suppose. :) His charaters more than make up for it, and "The Operative" is the best damn villain EVER. So refreshingly original and delightfully cruel in his approach.

The deleted scenes alone are somewhat cool; but Joss' explanations as to why they were removed are even better.

* Annie waves

Joss Whedon was a strong supporter of Kerry last year. He was encouraging people to have fund-raising house parties on a certain date, and they could participate in a group call-in to Joss to discuss the movie.

I won;t go into details about where I was disappointed because the disappoinment is directly linked to the plot of the story.
