Rumours and Fire

Rumous in Beirut are that a massacre in southern Lebanon is currently under way. Israeli artillery barrages are reportedly pounding certain villages, in which residents were warned to leave with pamphlets, but for some reason could not.

The problem appears to be one of implementation. the Education Minister, Qabbani, issued orders but the schools are not responding. However, later the Minister refuted such claims and asserted that schools have been opened.

All major roads leading anywhere in Lebanon (between cities and towns) have been cut off. The Lebanese isolated; staying in homes and bracing themselves.

Il-Dahyeh and Haret Hreik are under heavy artillery fire. News report that the Hizbullah headquarters have been decimated.

Al-Masna'a area, the last part of the Damascus-Beirut highways that is part of the Lebanese territories, has been hit.

Jabal Turbol next to Tripoli in the north has been raided. The Akkar and Dinnieh, two regions in the north, have been cut off. And an electricity power plant in Minieh in the north has been hit. I'm trying to call my family who are in the north and cannot reach them.

More to come....

Addendum: Just a thought that came to my mind: PM Seniora in his interview with CNN yesterday said that the Lebanese want safety and security for their children and Israeli's children. He said that this won't happen overnight, but Israel must create an atmosphere that is conducive for us to move to that point. Seniora asserted the government's respect for international resolutions and law. This means that PM Seniora openly does not endorse what Hizbullah is doing and if given an opportunity he will move towards their disarmament. PM Seniora will go down in history as a true statesman.

Update: Most European countries and the U.S. are arranging for the evacuation of their nationals. What does that mean? Worst things are to come. Allah yistor!

Update 2: Not rumors anymore - 23 already have died in an attack on the village of Marooheen. Jdaidet Yabous is being hit, an area which is on the Lebanon-Syria border, but on the Syrian side.

Addendum 2: For all commentors: We don't have a strong government. We are just starting to build ourself after the Syrians left last year. The Syrian military-intelligence apparatus controlled every aspect of Lebanese life and government. We are just starting to talk; yes we might have failed because we were not seizing the moment, but we were just starting to talk. Something that we couldn't do when the Syrians were there.

Hizbullah has almost betrayed us. Betrayed the dialogue, everyone. But let's face it: The Israeli attacks have completely paralyzed the political body of the country. So how can something be done?

Yes, sometimes all what we have is rhetoric. But for those who don't know history: PM Seniora, who is a Sunni Muslim, saying that he does not endorse and is not responsible for what Hizbullah did is a breakthrough. His saying that he longs for peace on both sides is a breakthrough. Alluding that Hizbullah should be disarmed is a breakthrough!

So give me a break!

Update 3: Israel says warplanes are bombing roads and bridges near Masnaa border checkpoint to prevent Hizbullah from taking 2 captured soldiers out of Lebanon. Israel Radio says Nasrallah is hiding in a tunnel under Hizbullah's headquarters in Haret Hreik.

Syrian sources deny that Syrian military checkpoints were targeted by Israeli fire.

Update 4: My whole extended family were able to spot Israeli warships from the Tripoli port; they are freaked out and are all heading to the mountains.

"Nobody knows how many rebellions, besides political rebellions, ferment in the masses of life which people earth."

12. If you watch
LBC America, you can see video of the destruction in Lebanon. Luckily we have that channel on cable. I have a young Lebanese neighbour and he's on line with his parents and cousins.

The PM also said the Israeils were at fault because Hizbullah exists because of the problems Israel "creates".

And what would that "problem" be, eh?

I saw the CNN interview here in the US. Your PM will not garner much sympathy here with such duplictious statements.

Israel presents the same "problem" for Hizbullah as office workers presented for Al-Quaeda in the World Trade Center.

No doubt they have similar "solutions" in mind.

Up till now Lebanon did nothing about Hizbollah and NOW the PM is saying he wants to disarm them? Does the Lebanese army have the power to disarm Hizbollah? To me, these sound like empty words. I fail to see the great statesmanship here.

see, that's is a perfect example how you "peace activists" can cause war, only to keep you conscience clean. if israel would have defended itself a few years ago, it could save both lebanese and israeli lives right now.

you can be both, sad because of the war, and yet understand the importance of those strikes to tel aviv and nahariya people, as well as for the people in beirut. these acts of violence by israel are sad but needed, needed for the defence of the entire area, and needed to clean the area from the monster that grew without nobody interupting in south lebanon

Almost? Almost!

Despite the nuance of the PM's statement, your country is suffering a measure of destruction because of the actions of terrorists in your midst.

In the US we cheered your Cedar Revolution, but the facts remain.

If you think the Israeli's should suffer bombings and attacks across borders while you all "talk" about the possibility of removing Hizbullah you are naive.

I don't think anything longterm will change until you have a decisive civil war and expel the terrorists.

I am sorry to be so harsh, but from where I sit to see your PM's fecklessness described as "statesmanship" (no matter how "young" or "new" your government) is worthy of pity.

He is obviously cowed by a force he cannot standup to - Hizbullah. But to hear is tiny "peeps" of the meerest tiny tiny hint of "independence" is truly, truly sad.

The attack near/in Syria is a shot across the bow, a warning to Syria and Iran that Israel is serious.

Report: Israel gives Syria ultimatum

London-based Arabic language newspaper Al-Hayat says Israel gave Syria 72 hours to stop Hizbullah’s activity, bring about release of kidnapped IDF troops. ‘Israel will not end military activity until new situation created that will prevent Syria, Iran from using terror organizations to threaten its security,’ newspaper quotes Pentagon official as saying
Roee Nahmias

The London-based Arabic language newspaper Al-Hayat reported Saturday that “Washington has information according to which Israel gave Damascus 72 hours to stop Hizbullah’s activity along the Lebanon-Israel border and bring about the release the two kidnapped IDF soldiers or it would launch an offensive with disastrous consequences.”

Once again... Israel doesnt want to pay the price while you trying to disarm HA thru the "negotiations".
Also... If you think that you've "succeeded" with Syrian pull-out thru international diplomatic pressure - you are wrong.
Hizballah is Syria. Thats why Assad so easily pulled his OFFICIAL troops out.
He knows he still can bite Israel with the help of Hizballah. He knows Nasrallah will keep Syrian interests safe in Lebanon.
Hizballah would never disarm thru talks and diplomatic pressure.
Admit it. The Lebanese people tried to avoid any direct confrontation with Hizballah, which (YES!) could lead to a Civil War. Out of fear and weakness.
Face the consequences now.
You stuck in the middle of war. Too bad. Either take weapon and go fight Hizballah or join Hizballah to fight Israel.
And another option of course... Run, hide or cry 'till this all is over.
Considering your past actions (or inaction, if to be more specific), i believe thats what you'll do.
BTW, i dont see Israel complaining to Intl' Community, while 600 Katyusha's raining on their cities. Know why?
They understand that they are in war that was declared on them. You dont.
So yeah. Give me a break.

They only morn lebaneese civilians. The IDF kill civilians while trying to take out military targets and infastructure. Unlike the Lebaneese that fire rockets into populated areas indiscrimately with the intended goal of harming only civilians.

Let's look at some each sides "targets" so far.

Israel:
Airports: Transportation that can be used for rearming Hezbollah. Every military in the world will target airports.
Roads/Bridges: Transportation and troop movement. Again always a military target.
Power grid: Communications etc.. Again always a military target.
Fuel Depots: Again always a military target.
Hezbollah HQ and strongholds: Enemy positions are always legitmate targets, even if they are among the population
Rocket launching sites: Again always a military target.
TV stations: propaganda and Communications. Again always a military target.

Israels goal: military victory. All targets are strategic in nature with the untimate goal of rendering the opposing army incapable of continued action.

Lebanon:
Navy ship: One of the few strategic military targets hit by Lebanon
Tiberias: residental areas, no strategic military targets nearby.
Haifa: Stella Maris neighborhood , no strategic military targets nearby.
Nahariya: residental areas, no strategic military targets nearby.
Safed: restdential areas. Airport nearby but not targeted.
Ma'alot: residental areas, no strategic military targets nearby.
Peki'in: residental areas, no strategic military targets nearby.
Horfesh: residental areas, no strategic military targets nearby.
El-Koush: residental areas, no strategic military targets nearby.
Tzuriel: residental areas, no strategic military targets nearby.

Lebanons goal: As many civilian casualties as possible, terror among the population, force Israel to the bargining table.

Has Israel suffered less casualties, yes. But it is not from a lack of trying on Lebanon's part. Over 1000 rockets have rained down on northern Israel, with the only intended purpose of killing civilians. Main reason for less casualties is that the people of northern Israel are held up in bomb shelters. Why does everyone have bomb shelters in Northern Israel...because Lebanon/Hezbollah have been attacking them for the last twenty years.

So please spare me the same old dirty tricks crap. It is like trying to compare a sniper shooting a general to a mad man spraying a machine gun in all directions. This is war. Will there be civilian casualties? Unavoidable. But which side is predominantly targeting civialians and which side is predominantly targeting strategic military targets?

I don't know the Lebanese system that well, but it's my understanding that there are quotas in parliament, but there is still a coalition and opposition. The hezbollah MPs can't be fired but the ministers can be fired from the cabinet. And if the government really cannot even fire terrorist ministers then what's the use of such a government? And why are we suppose to be encouraged by such absurd "breakthroughs"? And what can Israel possibly do under those circumstances?

How does this work?

The Lebanese attack a neighboring country and then demand that the neighboring country resolve the internal issues that lead to the attack?

Let's make sure we're getting this right: the lebanese want the israelis to eliminate hezbullah for them? That's what this sounds like to me.

The more I study this more enraged I become. Where is the flower of ARab manhood in all of this?

It is quite clear that the arabs lack the courage it takes to expunge the psychopaths that have highjacked their religion. But rather than summon this courage, you blame everyone but yourselves.

What, exactly, do you think we in America have been doing for the last five years? We've been studying this situation carefully and we've clearly reached some conclusions. And conclusion number one is that the arab muslim culture is dangerous to our civilization.

There is no point in mincing words now. Just look at the Syrian ambassador to the US, demanding that America play it's traditional role. To this guy America's traditional role is "dupe for the whiley arabs."

As they say in Mexico, NO mas. 9/11 changed all that. We got hip to your bullshit and we're not buying it anymore.

We have a 135,000 battle hardened troops sitting in Iraq. We've learned how to fight and win in your region. The syrian ambassador may be so stupid that he cannot see the change in the landscape, but we in American aren't.

Arab duplicity won't work this time. Woe is me balogna isn't selling. you attacked your neighbor, you've done nothing to confront the psychotics within your faith, you should have no expectations of Sympathy from the civilized world.

If you lack the balls to take on the evil doers among you then you're gonna die.

Welcome to a war YOU should have fought and didn't.

If the end of this war will only mark a return to how things were a day before the war, than nothing was achieved by either side but loss of lifes.

It is important to use this opportunity (YES! Thats what any crisis is - An opportunity) to make a DIFFERENCE in the way thongs are. If, in the end of this, Hizbullah is allawed to continue to attack Israel, than nothing has changed and all this will happen again. And again. And again...

For all this to CHANGE, Hizbullah MUST be disarmed - or be left alon on the battlefield, with no civillians to hide behind.

These are the options left to the lebanese people: disarm Hizbullah, or leave your country to them. Anything else means we will see a re-run of all of this, again and again and again.

Yes, I agree Israel's attacks make it harder for the Lebanese Government (such as it is) to act, but I don't think anyone in the Israeli Government seriously considers the possibility of the Lebanese Army actualy trying to disarm Hizbullah; I think Ulmert, Peretz and Halutz are trying to force Syria into orderring Hizbullah to back down.

This will take a long time, as Assad has no real concern for how many lebanese get killed. And this is where Lebanese civillians can make a difference, by making their voice heard and calling Hizbullah to stop. If the Lebanese overnment realise they have popular support, they MIGHT do something sooner.

Ulmert followed the path marked by Sharon and evacuated the Israeli settlments in Gaza. Everyone said it cannot be done, but he did it. It is time for the Lebanese People to be as currageous, and disarm Hizbullah for Lebanon's sake.

the lebanon's PM statements are 100% true. israel is an aggressor, instigator, and murderer. poor israel and US have to spin this shit HARD to make it seem like anything else... EVIL. this is pure EVIL.

Yup, 11:05am. It's all Israelis. Not Syria, Iran, Iraq, or any of the other nutjob repressive regimes. You collectively murder and torture all of your own in a matter of days than Israel has in all her entire existence. One day I hope you live in an Arab society that grants you half the rights Arab citizens have in Israel -- and that's with my acknowledgement of the blatant discrimination against Arabs in Israel!

4. Syria denying being hit because they really fear what they would have
to do if it was known that they were struck. The Lebanese people are the one to truly suffer in this and the enitre Arab world is once again standing by as Israel massacre Lebanon once again. It's what Israel and the US do best, massacre people when they know they can't evenly fight back. If you think Osama had it in for us, wait for the blowback from this latest Israeli massacre.

5. Israel always claims that weapons and militants are "hiding" in civilian
homes etc. to justify their attacks. There are no miltary bases inside Palestinian territory so where would one expect weapons and militants to be? And everyone in Israel between the ages of 18 and 21 are in the military so no matter where a place is attacked it is likely to kill "civilians" because the military is everywhere.

10. This blogger is calling Israeli blogger comments US Psyops
I hope they don't shut the comments section down.....

At 11:35 AM, Anonymous said...
to all lebanese - do not forget that a lot of what you are reading is american psyops - propaganda. we have to deal with it on every single political and social website with the ability to comment. they use the same tactics - baiting, name-calling, racist, ignorant flaming, and most importantly - getting out that pro-US message. which in this case, is a pro-israel message.

i agree, doha, that making people become members would cut this down a little bit, as long as you frequently prune the membership, with an eye for this propaganda.

you could say i'm a propaganda "fighter" - that's kind of what i do. it's astounding, for example, that the majority of the world is so against this - yet 90% of the people on this site blame hezbollah - not the entity with their hand on the constant trigger, israel - for the killing in lebanon. this is not coincidence.

in addition, i have strong feelings. as an american who has been tied to this agenda with a noose, there is blood on my hands i never wanted. this is so horribly out of whack. my last drop of sympathy for israel has vanished. i don't care about their dead; i don't care about the future of their country. they have fucked themselves by these actions in such a irretrievable way. that is my feeling on the matter. they are destroying an entire country! and holding up a virtually powerless boogeyman as the "real" culprit while they bomb and bomb away... killing fleeing civilians, debilitating the means of escape, and offering "the hand of peace"? what balls.

there is no justifying these actions. none. there have been some sincere israelis who have also said this - and for that, i thank you. but anyone who supports israel's actions here - in my opinion - are as evil as israel itself.

PORTS AND ARMY UNDER ATTACK

The Tripoli Port has been shelled by Israelis!

OH MY GOD!!! THAT'S MY HOME CITY. MY FAMILY IS IN THE CAR RIGHT NOW LEAVING THE CITY UP TO THE MOUNTAINS. THEY WERE SCARED WHEN I LAST CALLED THEM. I SHOULD CALL THEM RIGHT NOW TO DOUBLE CHECK ON THEM. YA ALLAH!!!!!

The Beirut port is also being hit!!!

Update: Al-Manara, next to AUB in Beirut, is being shelled right now!!!!!!!!!!! It's getting worse.

Update 2: BEIRUT LIGHTHOUSE DESTROYED!!! ALL LEBANON NOW IS UNDER ATTACK!!!!

Update 3: Jounieh and Aamchit ports have been hit.

Update 4: A raid targets the army radar base in Wajh al-Hajar in the northern city of Batroun. Casualties reported.

Update 5: One Lebanese soldier died and three wounded. Okay, so now the Lebanese Army is being attacked. And also all the Lebanese ports. In Tripoli's port they hit wheat reserves. I'm sure Hizbullah fighters are not hiding there. What about Jounieh or Aamchit? They are touristic ports.

What makes me boil even more is the "most trusted name in the news, CNN" reporting on the events.

You'd think life is so simple. Black, white. Evil, Good. "We're uprooting the evil tooth, it's painful, but it's ok". Seeing families and children and your country charred and burning is beyond "painful", it stirs violent reactions in the most moderate of us.

CNN and the rest of the media are either dumb, or they want do dumb their audience down, or both. Not dumb, but rather inhuman. I want to see the people saying "it must be done" go through an air raid and see death in their own eyes, and still feel good about the "must be done" rhetoric.... Just sickening.

People on this board seem to be surprised that Israel is targetting things that don't have the word "Hezbollah" on it. Well, that's the downside of allowing terrorists to roam free in a country. It legitimizes targetting of anything that is OR could be used as a platform for war-making. Maybe the former Beirut lighthouse was the location from where the Silkworm missile was fired yesterday.

In any case, Lebanon will no longer be used as an outpost for Iran after this is all said and done.

So saying that Israelis are racist is at least a bit hypocritical, don't you think?

And guess what, i am even more white than you are, so STFU

That's war Jay. Suck huh?

You hate us, we hate you. The only option is the barrel of a gun. If neither of us is going to stop hating then we need to accept war and that people are going to die. I am sorry if you find that cruel and uncaring. I am a realist. Currently we can not live side by side in peace. Surrender and we can talk peace. We will not surrender so it is up to you. Surrender or fight and try to make us surrender. That is war.

well for the military expert advising us to send the army to disarm hizbullah, my dear, I'm Lebanese and i know what is the Lebanese Army weaponry, they still use the old Bunher (remember those??), Syria didnt let the lebanese army modernize its weaponry, rather it infested it with Syrian Intelligence, and thats a fact, they had all the time to infiltrate the entire Government structure from the bottom up to the president to an extent that to this day, we are still infiltrated.

Now i've been reading this Blog for the past 3 years and all i hear is Israelis whining why we dont do anything about Hizbullah. I hate Hizbullah, My msn nickname is currently "Fuck Hizbullah" and i never liked those guys same as every Lebanese Christian and probably every other religion in the country. But Israelis, put some sense into ure heads and answer me this:
"Iran and Syria are the biggest threat To Israel at the moment, they are like the Serpent Head, why doesnt it bomb them since we all know that the entire arab region hate Iran and Syria, in addition, Syria has an obsolete army consisting of 60% fags amongst its rank (official numbers). You would like this wont you, and i bet Halutz and his friends wants it too, I DO TOO. BUT, USA wont let u do that becoz it exercises pressure, Economical and political pressure. Does that make from you cowards and Whinos?

Still with me? Ok now make that smaller on a scale of 1/10,000 , on Lebanese scale relative to Israel, We cannot throw Hizbullah out becoz the Lebanese are not armed, the Lebanese Army isnt armed enough to break the hizbullah (the Syrians made sure of that), In addition to have installed a Terror factor throughout last year with the 14 Bombings around lebanon that targeted economical and political Joints. Despite that, we were trying to TALK our way out of this, probably a bit slowly, but we were getting there, SO SPARE US YOUR WHINING coz ure not so different from us for god's sake.

Instead, Try lessening your hate posts and support the people who are facing Syria and Hizbullah for you, the People that received the PLO Plague for you for several years and drowned in civil war so you would NOT be PLAGUED yourself, The people that are supporting every FART happening in the middle east for you, coz we're the "wistle on the Presto", everytime there is excess pressure in Israel, something pops up in lebanon (mainly the PLO), The people that were occupied by the Syrian Scum so u wont have to dispute them in Gulan Heights and were given Lebanon instead.

So forget the PEanuts and hit the damn Serpent head.
So lemme see u disarm a radical Shii'a group armed with AK47 and willing to blow themselves up around every corner while u have Pens and Papers as weapons.

hezbollah took 2 israeli soldiers, in order to bargain for the 3 lebanese israel illegally holds in its country (but you don't respect other nations, or international law).

the rockets came after you bombed lebanon's infrastructure - including the airport, an electricity plant, 2 military (not hezbollah - lebanese) bases, the port, and southern lebanon.

Bush has pushed hard for Syria to get its grubby paws off Lebanon, and is obviously working hard to topple the Iranian mullahs, so don't slime his intentions re: Lebanon.

Bush, America, and Israel all want a peaceful, democratic, SECULAR Lebanon.

Hezbollah, Syria and Iran all want an armed camp from which to launch rockets against the "Zionist entity."

Regular Lebanese are obviously getting caught in the middle, which is unfortunate, but this was going to happen sooner or later. Better now than in five years when Iran has nukes.

And in addedum, if the Israel army really wanted to take on Hezbollah, they would have worked with the Lebanese government and made coordinated raids. From reading the Lebanese PM's comments, and everybody's thoughts, I don't think anyone would of been against a coordinated ground assault without random shelling..

But that is not what Israel wants. Punishing an entire civilian populace for what a few do is by no means justified...Perspective wise if a radical element from the USA (and believe me we have quite a few) were to go across the border and shell Mexico, I wouldn't feel they were justified to start nuking or bombing the USA (though that is an impossibility, nonetheless).

Update 6: Army establishments in the Beirut port were hit. The Hamat airport in the north was hit also. Amr Mousa the Secretary General of the Arab League is speaking right now.

Update 7: The Arab League has decided to "help" Lebanon. How? The Arab Ministers have came to a conclusion that they have all dropped the Peace Negotiations long time ago. Therefore, they decided to revive the negotiations by taking the issue to the UN Security Council. Go figure!

Update 8: Our President went from Baabda to Faqra (for "rest"). While PM Seniora is making his incessant calls and meetings. Our President is pathetic.

27. LEBANON IS HERE TO STAY

LEBANON IS HERE TO STAY

A very moving speech by Prime Minister Seniora. So moving, so moving.

The last thing he said is: Loubnan sa yabka, Loubnan sa yabka, Loubnan sa yabka! (Lebanon is here to stay!)

Yes, Lebanon is here to stay. No one has the right to destroy it, to undermine it. We have paid so much.

He reiterated that the Lebanese state needs to be strong, and is required to protect its citizens and establishments. Therefore, he declared that all parties need to cease fire, and negotiations need to start in cooperation with the international community. Second, the Lebanese Army needs to head out to the South in close cooperation with the UN. Third, a call to all friends of Lebanon to help Lebanon, a country declared as devestated, in every single way, through diplomacy, aid and so far.

He again said that the government does not endorse what Hizbullah did and was not aware of it. He also condemned strongly Israel's attacks which has led to many deaths of civilians, especially those families who were trying to flee the south. It's so disheartening. Lebanon is now facing a humanitarian crisis and also economic.

PM Seniora is a true statesman, no matter what many might say. Lebanon is here to stay, is here to stay, is here to stay!

He addressed the whole world from the heart of Beirut, not like how our President who headed to Faqra in the mountains.

Update: So an Israeli General said that the IDF did not afterall hit Syrian military posts on the Lebanon-Syrian border. They only hit inside the Lebanese territories, but next to the Syrian posts. He added that in the IDF defense strategy, it's not planned to have Syria hit, just Lebanon.

Thank you so much for letting us know. Of course it seems that Israel is hitting an easy target, Lebanon. No one can fight back, except for Hizbullah. We don't have a strong army. News even is saying that all of the Army radars positioned in Lebanon's ports have been destroyed by the IDF. So...please don't tell me Lebanon is not an easy target. It's not that the Syrian Army is equal in force to the IDF, but perhaps the IDF should hit those behind Hizbullah, not the Lebanese people.

Addendum: Peaceful World Wide Rally to Protest Ongoing attacks on LEBANON

The Lebanese state should have tried being strong last year, rather than ceding its sovereignty to a pack of Iranian thugs.

As an American, I do find myself continually shaking my head at Arab logic. Will I ever hear an Arab politician tell the plain truth?

Obviously Lebanon isn't "strong" in any sense of the word.

HOW will Lebanon stay? At the good graces of terrorists? As a puppet of Syria?

It's too late for promises. Too late for moving speeches. The time for promises was in 2000 when Israel left.

Now is the time for action.

If the Lebanese want freedom and peace they need to do something about it.

The rest is empty talk.

doha: thank you again for your highly competent and composed appraisels and updates. i was struck reading the comments section over the last few days by how much vitriol and just childish 'verbal' mudslinging some of the readers (if that's the right word) of this blog get up to and just thought i'd briefly interject an open letter to everyone who tries to derail, deform and destroy what is (and needs to be) a forum for positive discussion, proactive information and helping those of us far away from explosions and death try to find out as much as we can about the plight of our friends and loved ones.

the age old question: would you flamers, trolls and other ne'erdowells be as comfortable saying "i hope your family dies" "your x deserves to be incinerated" "you (dogs / monkeys / snakes / etc.) are xyz" in person? really? i dare you. do you get so "angry" (easy to do online) because you are marvelously impotent and frustrated in the rest of your life and so somehow venting your bile in a forum where many people are just trying to get information about their familys and their homes and the places they love seems somehow acceptable? were you raised by wolves? seriously.

thank you to everyone else (keep the great updates coming) and maybe all the negative, racist, jingoistic nasties can -- um -- take a break for a bit? this isn't fucking kindergarten. it's serious for a lot of us.

Israeli army sources say that Lebanese army radars were destroyed because it was determined that a Lebanese army radar was used to control the missile that hit the Israeli navy ship yesterday evening.

If the Lebanese army is either stupid enough to assist Hizballah, or too weak to reject Hizballah's "requests" for assistance, it will be hit. Otherwise, Israel has no reason or will to attack the Lebanese army.

As for the redundant phrase: "do u expect us to sit by while u kidnap our soldiers? " No we dont, go for the root, ure wasting ure bullets on hizbullah, why dont u hit Syria, we all know they are behind this (we all know that the soldiers are there by now), OR USA is bullying u too much so they dont face more trouble in Iraq? yeah, bigger countries have a tendency to do that.

If he want's to "talk business" he must first of all bring back the 2 Israeli hostages.

Let's see if you can handle Hizballa with that before you asking us to belive that you can restraint Hizballa in southern Lebanon.

You got the key for a sulotion.
you better fight for your right to live in peace. Without Nasralla holding your breath.

It sucks for the Lebanese people, but Hezbollah uses the Lebanese infrastructure including the highways, bridges, ports and the airport to move its men and to receive arms and other supplies from within Lebanon and from Syria and Iran. From one of the Lebanese blogs:

I don't know what to say anymore. Sayyid Nasrallah is still alive and declaring an open war. Where is our President? Where are our Ministers? Prime Minister? Members of Parliament?

All these institutions and the guardians of these institutions are obsolete at this point. Nasrallah is leading the show. He's defying everything and everyone. He is assuming the position of the guardian of the Prophet's Family, against all odds. This is not about Lebanon anymore; this is about Nasrallah's pride.

The Iran-Syria Axis has just fully materialized!

Of course you could have won it. If you had asked the US, or France, or NATO, or fucking POLAND for some help, Hezbullah would have vanished into thin air at the first sign of a professional WESTERN military.

But your "Arab pride" or "Muslim brotherhood" or whatever the hell it is somehow forces you to prefer bloodthirsty terrorists to civilized Westerners. You don't mind giving Iran a third of your country, but God forbid you allow the French onto your soil!

And you wonder why some in the West are losing patience with "moderate" Muslims?

If you'd just ASK for help, we'd help. We want to KILL these fuckers. Why won't you let us? You ENJOY living next to 8th century barbarians who treat women like cattle and stone homosexuals?

Doha and the other Lebanese here: you have my prayers for your saftey, concern for the future of Lebanaon, and good will.

However, you must understand a cease-fire under the present circumstances is simply not possible. While a cease-fire would take the immediate pressure off of Lebanon - and is attractive for that reason - the primary beneficiaries of any cease-fire would be Hizbullah and its patrons.

Hizbullah has to be defeated. It must essentially cease to exist as an oranized entity capable of waging war.

To paraprhase Cato the Censor speaking to the Roman Senate: ceterum censeo Hizbullah esse delendam.

The utter destruction of Hizbullah is a military and political necessity . If that means a wider war with Syria and even Iran, that will happen. The best Lebanon can hope is that the Israelis are quickly victorious and are not attacked with WMD, which would cause them to respond in kind, imposing a Carthegenian peace between the Mediterranean and the Iraq border.

At 2:10 PM, Anonymous said...

I liked how emotional Saniora's speech was, but he left out a key element making it fluff without much meaning at all. He could have taken the chance to slip in a criticism of Hezbollah to show the world that our government really doesn't APPROVE of what happened. Instead he said that he vows to stand up to Israel. I wish he would have elaborated. Not one time did he even mention the WORD hezbollah.
and to add, where are those politicians that have been so keen on keeping their faces in the media since last year's Cedar Revolution...where are Aoun and Geagea now ? where is Jumblatt ? how nice it is that they are happy to be around when things are calm...who should we turn to now ?

thank you again for all of your updates.

Of course they don't want Israel's help, Israelis are Jews, and therefore, evil.

to those who answered my post: dont put us in the same category as PLO fuckers or Najaf extremists, Jews used to live in lebanon between us christians, and muslims, but unfortunately, the area was overrun by insanity, religious isanity.

Dont tell us about "arab pride" and that shit, if u live in lebanon, u know damn well that this is not the case, anyway, this is useless, maybe after there will be peace, u'll see how much the lebanese are different from the rest of the arab radical world, probably after u visit Hamra and Achrafieh, u'll spend more time here than in Tel Aviv.

as for Hizbullah, he has been amassing rockets and hiding them in cache for the past 15 years under the syrian occupation, and everytime the army tried to intervene after syria came out, they instigate a problem that threatens internal peace (Hizbullah = Syrian gun in lebanon).

AND YES we asked foreign support, but not the military one, go take a course in urban warefare and u'll know that Hizbullah is very well dug in in lebanon (thanks again to syria), so a direct confrontation would ruin the country even more than than what the IDF is doing now. So the pressure was being made via political mediums. Why do u think Israel decided to attack Hizbullah this year and didnt do so when he was doing fiercer attacks on Israel before? that is becoz ISRAEL is forbidden or DOES NOT want a direct confrontation with Syria, although they could win easily, and I as Lebanese, and as an Expert in regional politics, I tell u that Nasrallah wouldve died politically in lebanon IF Israel dropped JUST ONE bomb on damascus, or if IDF waited more till the US and international community increased the pressures on syria, and therefore, open the way for less radical leaders to take charge of Hizbullah and start transforming it into a political party and disarm it with the help of the remaining lebanese. THAT WAS THE PLAN: WEAKEN NASRALLAH and make way for more popular but less radical leaders (who were hated by the syrian regime). but dont claim ure expert in lebanese politics just as we dont claim to be expert in Israeli politics...

My comment:
It takes radar to fire off a Silkworm. Don't you get it? Lebanese military allows Hezbollah to play with its toys. So, now they're gone. It's as simple as that. Israel will give Leb the keys back once it clears out the house. Then Lebs should go home, build life back, and don't let others on your property.

I appreciate the job you do and your insights.

In some of the other posts, which I caught up with this morning after finding your site, many seem to ignore the elephant in the corner. Which is, this situation where an army/militia, independant from your government's control, is allowed to occupy part of your country and enjoy the protection of its borders and freely cross the international border of your neighboring state to kidnap then return to your country without repercussion. In addition, the same group is allowed to fire missiles from inside your territory, across an international border, randomly into a neighboring state.

The Lebanese seem to be caught in an impossible squeeze here. Its horrible to watch. But, I dont see how any reasonable person would expect this situation to be allowed to continue. Eventually, that neighbor who is at the other end of the rockets and has its citizens kidnapped is going to invade you to end it. Either you do it, or they eventually will. This is logical, agreed?

Thats the part I see missing from the other discussions. Setting aside all the bigger conflicts in the region and world and just focussing soley on the Israeli-Lebanon dispute, it seems that peace is possible if you did not allow this independent group within your country to use your territory as a base and safe-haven from which to launch assaults.

All I have seen on this so far in the opinions of the Lebanese is a sort of blanket complaint that the LA is weak and Syria still controls things. What I have not seen is any type of expression of a determined consensus to rid yourselves of Hezbollah.

But this seems to me to be the price of peace. Are Lebanese willing to pay it? If so, then state what is necessary to either clear them out or at least disarm them. And, of course, prevent this same situation from re-occuring in the future.

As neither Arab nor Jew I dont have the same vested interest as some of you do. But do in the humanity in general and hope for as quick and least destructive outcome as possible.

best wishes to all, john p.

There is a real parallel here between the Israeli decision to leave Lebanon in 2000 and the decision that is now needed by the government in Beirut. Barak (and then Bibi) did something that no other Israeli politician had dared to do; understand the potential danger and the perception of the move as a defeat, and see it for what it really was - an opportunity to short cicuit the cycle of bloodshed and regain the moral high ground. The Lebanese government must now do the same. Ackowledge that sovereign control by a democratically elected government is a key element in running a country. They need to take back the south and disarm the militants. If they can't do it then maybe they should ask for a pan arab force to be formed to come in and do so.
From reading this and other blogs it seems clear that there is an elevated level of rational thinking in Lebanon. The people understand that Israel has a right to exist and has the power to be a real friend to the lebanese people. There has to be a way to make that happen and allow the innocent populations on both sides to get on with their lives and fulfill their aspirations.
Its great for the PM to make a speech - let's see some real proposals and real action.

First, you should understand that what the IDF is doing now is the opening act of a full-scale invasion to root out Hezbollah.

It's going to get much, much worse.

I think you'll agree that standing up against Hezbollah and calling in the French -- not pathetic UN peacekeepers, but tens of thousands of heavily armed French soldiers eager for some Hezbollah blood -- and actually HELPING them -- yes, actually TAKING SIDES and DOING SOMETHING rather than talking... well, it would have been much better for Lebanon.

I feel for your country, but you are complicit in the creation and growth of Hezbollah. Your president is *still* a Syrian toadie. They blow up your national hero, and you still allow one of their thugs to be your president?

Gathering in public places and waving flags is great, but it only gets so much done. When you're dealing with bloodthirsty thugs, at a certain point you have to pick up the guns.

And if you needed military help, it was there for the asking. The entire West is on your side, if you'd just open your eyes and see it.

If Hezbollah cares so much for Lebanon, why do they not surrender? If they truly cared about Lebanon they would do something to get the Israelis to stop. War is ugly, but peace has to be bought with blood.

If you and the average Lebanese want peace, here is what you need to do.

Get a weapon, go out at night, find Hizbullah, kill them. Hide your weapon until the next night and do it over and over and over. Get your friends and relatives to do the same.

If you do it long enough, guess what? They will leave or surrender (no, forget that, they are too stupid and mad with years of hate to do that).

If you want to live and to prosper, for your children and your grandchildren to have a good life, free from war, you must fight and even die to do this.

Many have discovered this simple fact, many have died for it. Americans have died for this for not only themselves but also for millions of other peoples of this earth.

When you can do that, when you care more for your children and for your grandchildren than you do for your own life...

Then you will have peace and freedom. Until you and your countrymen do, you will be nothing more than slaves and have nothing.

Australians are far enough not to be hated or biased and they are quite eager to actually find some military missions for their army to keep it ready to curb a probable escallation in the Pacific

In my neighborhood, we had a drug gang take over a whole apartment building.
From there, they launched attacks on other competitiors who tried to deal in this formally quiet area, and their "customers" (crack heads) would prey on the peaceful neighbors by roberry and murder, and burglaries of those who lived there.
This gang turned a 5 block area into HELL.

-The Police did nothing.
-The Government did nothing.
-The Neighborhood Watch was intimidated and threatened with death from these thugs.

You know what happened?
20 Men from this neighborhood went into that apartment building, broke down the doors of the Drug Gang, beat the living crap out of them so bad that their mothers felt it.

And THESE MEN took that building back, and told the Owner it will be burned to the ground if he let the Drug Gang back.

Been quiet here ever since.

thats what u get when ure occupied for 15 years, and when the occupying country leaves, leave u "boobytraps" that if ignited, would generate an internal war between christians, sunni and druz from one side, and Shiia from the other. so what to do ?

In addition, the reason the elbanese government was a bit patient with hizbullah is that he pledged to operate only in the Shebaa farm (another mine left by syria, they dont say its lebanese territory and dont say its not) so Hizbullah was saying he is trying to free sheb3a (a region in the far south, between syria, lebanon and Israel, clearly u'll know whats next then :D) from the "Israeli occupation" and he pledged to only operate in sheb3a and not cross the blue line which is the official uncontested border. But what u see now in the news headlines as "Rules of the game have changed", they mean that Hizbullah for the first time after the Israeli withdrew from the south, crossed the blue line, and operated outside the Sheb3a area and kidnapped the 2 soldiers. AND THIS IS what everyone is failing to see and understand on this blog, and in the entire world, that Hizbullah surprised the Leb govnmt, broke its word, knew that would furiate Israel, and despite all those, he did it. and that is why the lebanese government is saying that they had nothing to do with the kidnapping.

Now u might wonder how come the government is dealing with Hizbullah, MAN, there is one million soul, Shii'a, that are controlled by about 40,000 militants, and they do not dare to question Nasrallah or his BOZOS, and if nasrallah says BLOW URESELF, they blow themselves, 1 million soul (now this is a typical arab fanaticism and not the other lebanese).

So the Lebanese government was trying to avoid: 1- carnage, 2- internal war, 3- a reason for syria to say to the international community: "look, i left lebanon, and they started killing each others, they need me there, i should go back".

NO WE WONT ALLOW THEM BACK, we drove them out with demonstrations once, but it wont happen again, if we had to choose, we prefer a bomb dropped from an airplane on a free land is better that a knock on the floor by the back of the AK47 of a syrian army.

and if anyone of u need more clarifications on lebanese internal politics, or feel like he wants to have constructive talks like i started to do with some israelis, u can email me on redminister@hotmail.com coz i'm really pissed of the ignorance i saw today in all those posts.

for those calling for military fighting, we did that from 1972 till 1991, it got us nowhere, becoz whatever number of souls we lost, if there is a regional DEAL that has to pass, everything will go up the wind, we fought the PLO, then the Syrians for 17 years, then when USA needed syria's support in the first gulf war (yes its support to close its long border on iraqi supplies), the USA then gave Syria the green light to use the Air-force (which was forbidden to her to do so or else Israel would shoot every plane down) and was able to break the Status-quo, break all our fortifications and overrun the country. and since there is too much turmoil in the area, we dont want to be the victims of "big boyz deals" after loosing so many souls. That is why we do not want to carry guns against syria and hizbullah.
and for those telling us to ask for french military intervention, WAKE UP, the mighty USA is still facing problems in iraw coz the neighbours are still helping insurgents, and the insurgents themselves were well prepared for urban warefare, even if the iraqi population is trying to fight them as well and pinpointing them, but still, regional powers and intervention is the key.

it's like going to a funeral and shooting spitballs at the mourners. i too stand up for lebanon and for the voices of those who are unheard because of the strategic interests of global media. i just wish people like this moron: "Do you muslims like the idea of your daughter being a sexual slave for a suicide terrorist in your Paradise?" would go and post their idiocy somewhere where the readers of the board weren't holding their breath to see if a bunch of airplanes had just dropped bombs on the house of someone they knew.

Hey, can you blame us for being ignorant? Your politics are more complex than a Dostoevsky novel.

But it seems that basically your "Cedar Revolution" wasn't really much of a revolution after all. You didn't REALLY get your government back, did you?

You essentially allowed your foreign policy to be determined by a genocidal terrorist organization, right? So in the end, can you really blame Israel for taking action? If the situation were reversed, wouldn't YOU take action to protect your homeland?

I think we can all agree, at least on this blog, that Hezbollah are the villains here.

So don't blame Israel. Hell, with any luck they'll do you a huge favor and "simplify" your politics by eliminating Hezbollah. I mean would you really object to 40,000 dead Hezbollah "freedom fighters"?

If you're not willing to stab Hezbollah in the back -- and this is obviously the best time to do that -- then keep your heads down, stay safe, and stop blaming Israel for finishing what you started.

There is people , there is numbers , there is people who think that Hizbollah only can protect . And to support their cause there is all what Israel did before if not now ! they have the History to testify that when they were without defence they got killed and their land was burned ... This is only to tell you that the problem is not easy Hisbollah came from people it is not something that came from no where and we should change an opinion in order to have peace , this is Democracy , UNDERSTAND , THIS IS IT !

to anon 2:51,

please read carefully what i'm writing, i'm being as comprehensive as possible, the 25% are controlled by 40,000 with an iron fist, and in small geographical areas (easily controllable), Hizbullah is expert in that stuff.
and i said also (damn i hate repeating myself) that there are less radical but MORE POPULAR Leaders amongst those 25%, but for the reasons mentioned above they cannot just go tell Nasrallah: "ure not our leader"... hehehe u clearly dont watch his speeches how much "Hitleristic" he is.

now when the IDF operation first started, I was hailing it, it was working great:
1- isolating the missile cache through bridges destroyed
2- isolating the south, his base of operation.
3- clearing out the dahyeh from civilians (with various means), so less human shields, less wrong targets for F16s, less chaos for the IDF intelligence on the ground, and making those 25% more dispersed and less controllable by the 40,000 i mentioned above
4- the IDF attacks were smart in a sense of making those 25% get more angry from hizbullah (no power, no water, no medicine, no supplies, no nothing becoz of the "mistake" hizbullah committed and broke his promise to the lebanese of not crossing the blue line)

but, today, the operation is taking a completely different approach, they are targeting the Hizbullah adversaries. like the Manara area, and Junieh.

I'm not worried about the cost of few bridges, that can be repaired with all the money we are going to receive soon after the operation is done, but the civilian casualties are my concerns, the israeli are attackin civilians, and from the last 2 days, they were able so far to kind-of differentiate between friend from foe. now, the IDF is trigger happy.

I know that when the operation is done, and IF, just IF, hizbullah is destroyed, Lebanon will flourish much more than wat it was before the 1970s, but at what price? a price that the IDF is making very high.

I think you should also be aware of a rally against the war is also planned for tomorrow in Tel Aviv:

http://haokets.com/article.asp?ArticleID=1873

We are calling upon all those who oppose the silent opposition to join our protest march this coming Sunday, 16.7.06, at 19:00, in Tel Aviv! Please, spread the word and come en masse!

Silence the Canons — Start Negotiating!

The illusion that a 'strong and firm' Israeli government can unilaterally determine the
borders and lives of Israel and its neighbors has shattered into a bloody reality. We can only expect more casualties, wounded, destruction, anxiety, economic and social paralysis for us and our neighbors are the price to pay if we continue to avoid the path of political negotiations.
Barak unilaterally stopped the peace process with Syria and preferred a unilateral withdrawal from Lebanon, without negotiations or agreements. Israel was left with the Golan Heights and with an armed Hizbollah on the border. We are now paying the price.
Barak and Ben-Ami, Sharon and Ben Eliezer, Mofaz and Peres, and now Olmert and Peretz gave up negotiating with the Palestinians and tried, and are still trying, to withdraw from some of the territories while maintaining the occupation in the rest of the territories.
Now it is clear:
No fence and no wall will protect Israel from hostile neighbors. The IDF has failed and will keep losing in the battle against guerilla forces. Technological and instrumental superiority allows one to spy, destroy, liquidate, but it cannot prevent injuries in the border or the home front, among civilians and soldiers.
After the long years of the failed military attempt to overcome guerilla forces in Lebanon, how can we think that the current use of force will solve anything? We've been in this situation before!!!
The only true defense, the only way to guarantee a different future, a future of peace and security, is to resolve the source of the hostility, to solve the conflict through negotiations, through compromise, by ending the occupation and establishing a relationship of equality and respect between Israelis and Palestinians and between Israelis and the neighboring nations.
Does it sound crazy? It is the sane thing to do. The sounds of explosion, the smell of burning and the rivers of blood are the crazy things.
Does it sound difficult? It is. We have realized already that the negotiations won't be simple, that the conflict is complicated, that both sides will be required to make big and painful concessions. But does anyone seriously think that military solutions are possible?!

Tomorrow, Sunday 16.7, we will hold a protest march in the streets of Tel Aviv:

No More Military Madness!
Stop the Unilateral Illusion!
Stop Killing Civilians in Lebanon, Israel and Gaza!
Start Political Negotiations!

We'll meet at 19:00 on the corner of Frishmann and Chen Blvd.
Those who can help making signs should come as of 16:00 to "haGada haSmalit", 70 Ahad Ha'am St.

No. I wouldn't object to 40,000 dead Nazis. Would you? I certainly won't object to 40,000 dead Islamo-fascist barbarians who want to return the world to the Dark Ages. On the contrary, I think their deaths are necessary if humanity is to move forward.

Anyone who is willing to kill for 8th century religious beliefs, in my opinion, is better off dead. If there were 40,000 heavily armed Christians blowing up coffee shops in my home town, I'd want them all dead too.

Now, I'd much prefer they change their views and put down their guns. But if they insist on the fight, then we have to kill them. Don't we?

Lebanon should exercise its sovreignty on all of its territory, including the southern border with Israel. It is the undisturbed activity of Hizballah, ynder the Iranian and Syrian protection, that provoked the IDF into targeting specific areas in Lebanon. Israel has no dispute with the state of Lebanon, but only with those organizations based in Lebanon that wish to exterminate Israel itself.

Israel and Lebann are the most progressive countries in the Muddle East. Therefore, they both have vested interst in calming down the atmosphere and exercise normal relationships - even without an official agreement.

yes. because that is the highest and most rational point that humanity has reached. congratulations. welcome to the ranks of the barbarians. discussion of needs, wants, expectations always more valuable than killing. again -- if you've never seen someone be killed i suppose that this has different resonance -- i personally would much prefer to reason, discourse and discuss with 40,000 nazis and try to get them to denazify than to kill them. causing more deaths has never moved humanity forward, except in the most grim, utilitarian, facist interprations of "forwardness" -- we've reached further than that -- some of us. i hope.

Realistically, the time for pompous prouncements from Lebanese politicians has come and gone, and won't come back for a while. Carefully measured statements of criticism of Hezbullah aren't enough; strong statements aren't enough.

The Lebanese are going to have to decide if their fear of or love of Hezbollah is greater than their fear of what the IDF can do to a nation that is at war with Israel.

"but at what price? a price that the IDF is making very high."

15 dead civilians is a "very high" price for your nation's freedom?

I think your sense of perspective is a bit skewed here. For example, one of your bloggers posted:

"BEIRUT LIGHTHOUSE DESTROYED!!! ALL LEBANON NOW IS UNDER ATTACK!!!!"

A lighthouse which housed a radar which guided a missile which struck an Israeli ship was blown up. And suddenly ALL LEBANON NOW IS UNDER ATTACK!!!!

Maybe the IDF is being too heavy-handed, but I'm not seeing much restraint from your bloggers, so I have no idea what the truth is.

But I do know this, when Hezbollah intentionally wages war to maximize civilian casualties ON THEIR OWN SIDE -- as you know they do -- what else do you expect? Maybe if they didn't house their weapons in civilian houses, there would be fewer civilian casualties? Maybe if they didn't hold their planning sessions with their wives and children in the next room, there would be fewer civilian casualties?

I don't see the IDF soldiers pushing their wives in front of them. If you're so upset about dead civilians, maybe you should direct some of your invective at Hezbollah?

But I don't want to jump to conclusions, so let's hear your argument. Let's say it's 1939, and you have to prevent WW2 by talking with Hitler.

There is no reason for Israel to attack Syria. The IDF doesn't exist to solve Lebanon's problems. All Israel needs is a buffer in southern Lebanon since that's where the aggression against Israel comes from.

At 3:30 PM, itai said...
The reason Lebanese army radar stations were destroyed:
The missiles fired by Hizbulah on the Israeli war ship is a self guiding radar missile but in order to launch it it needs to get the initial coordinates of the target from another radar. this makes your army a prime suspect in assisting the Hizbulah with that attack. And either way it's safer for the ships that your radars are down.

What I think is this: Hizbulah has a few thousand armed militants let say they even have 5000 armed men. The Lebanese army has 75,000 soldiers so if your government had the will they would probably find the way to take control of matters in their country.

So excuse me for not buying that "we're being held hostage", "blame it on someone else" rhetorics.

The Lebanese ambassador to the U.S. publicly expressed support of the attack across the border on wednesday. just before Lebanon realised Israel is not going to put up with this shit anymore and he was called back to Lebanon.

I don't believe your government is sincere, I think they just found out they made a big mistake messing with Israel so now they just try to make excuses and throw off the blame.

how do you make those groups feel disempowered in the first place? by destroying their homes, livelihood, communications, currency, *avenues of participation with the world at large* and by making them feel less then human.

If hizbullah are such criminals to hide behind women and children, does that mean you should kill them, ure a jew for god sake, a believer of god, a god that does not kill people like Saddam, Taliban and Algerian extremists did.

You have a moral responsibility to promote proper civilized behavior. I see now on ManarTV (hizbullah station which should be bombed by the way) people showing burnt children on tv to promote hatered towards Israel. and some israeli extreme newspaper show all the deaths made by hizbullah attack, and that results in total hate... the lebanese watching this would hate all Israelis, and israelis hate all lebanese (like i'm sensing in the posts). This thing has to stop.

Do u ever wondered why the arab muslims hate u so much: becoz u treat them very wrong, but thats not the only reason, the real reason is that their extreme, politically oriented religious figure use those pictures and videos and feed it to their children. (I hate extremism in all religions, even those perverted priests in New york)

That is why, the only way to face so much hatred that became a vicious cycle of "who came first? chicken or egg?" is to restructure the education, and control the media like Jazeera, Al Manar and whatever extreme israeli tv that uses such graphical images to promote Hatred.

Look, I respect your opinion, and I WISH the world were like that. But there are some people, and some idealogies, that don't want peace. They WANT a fight. The Nazis WANTED a fight. Hezbollah WANTS a fight. Al-Qaeda WANTS a fight.

And so it's either fight them, or give in to them.

I think history has shown what happens when you give in to them. I think the Lebanese people are learning right now what happens when you give in to them.

I'm not a bloodthirsty monster, and again, I wish your point of view was correct in all situations.

But it's not. For the world to become a better place, some people have to die. That's a sad, unfortunate fact.

But it's a fact.

So no, I won't cry over 40,000 dead barbarians, because their deaths will allow 4 million, or 40 million, or 400 million, to live in peace.

War is terrible. But sometimes it's the lesser of two evils.

SAVE LEBANON. DESTROY HEZBOLLAH.

It's the only path to peace in Lebanon. When Israel withdrew from south Lebanon in 2000, they scrupulously followed UN resolutions and got UN to sign off on the border. OTOH Hezbollah decided to keep firing occasional rockets. They have had many provocations, but Israel decided to ignore them until now. In January, Hezbollah made a policy to try to kidnap IDF soldiers. That is an ACT OF WAR. Now, the crossed the border and killed and kidnapped soldiers, deliberately provoking Israel at a time when Hamas in Gaza made the same provocations. These groups deny even the right of Israel to exist and foment hatred and preach genocide against Jews.

Iranian Guards are advisors to Hezbollah. They helped fire the missile that damaged Israel's ship, thay helped build Hezbollah border posts used to attack israel. It's unfortunate that Lebanon is a pawn of a Syrian-Iran pincer attack on Israel (from Gaza/Hamas and Lebanon/Hezbollah).

So what are Lebanese expecting from Israel? To do nothing while Hezbollah crosses into israel and kills IDF soldiers?!? Of course, Israel will respond to an act of war with war against Hezbollah. The problem is that now Hezbollah was let into Lebanese Govt, it's like letting a terrorist into your house - you are now prisoners of his violence and/or complicit by not stopping it sooner.

It is stunning and sad that Hezbollah forces have popular support among Lebanese Shiites, but these groups would be nothing without $100s of millions from Iran and Syria's sponsorship and support. The Shiite community has to be talked down from being used as pawns for the agressions of Iran, and the other communities -Christian, Druze, Sunni - have to make a fundamental break with Hezbollah and deman

There is no requirement to share a Government with Hezbollah, if they will not comply with UN resolution to disarm, remove them from the Govt. Force a de-escalation or force them out. The UN resolution requiring dismantling of militias must be enforced. A Lebanese Army that keeps the peace at the southern border must replace the terrorist activity of Hezbollah.

This act of war was a proxy attack from Iranian and Syrian interests. It's not Lebanon's war - it is Hezbollah's and Syria's war. Just as the PLO destroyed Lebanon's peace in the 1970s by destabilizing and sparking civil war, Hezbollah's irresponsible behavior may drag Lebanon back down again.

If this is not done, Lebanon will keep paying the price for being a base camp for terror-masters.

And if Lebanese say "No we don't have the power to do this". Well - If the Lebanese can't do it, let IDF do the dirty work, and stay safe while they do this ugly but necessary thing. I hope Lebanon is better for it in the long run.

First of all let me say this: fuck you!
Second thing, you fire at us, dance and give away candies on your streets when you kill and kidnap our soldiers, and NOW you
cry out like babies?! The least you can do is fight like men and if you can't, if you are as weak as you claim then don't start a fight that you can't finish.
And regarding this cowerdly asshole sweating pig - nasrallah (may he die of brain cancer - or even better an Israeli missile), let me give you an advice: KILL HIM.

Kul kalb biji yumo!
Fuck you very much.

The fun have just begun,

"If hizbullah are such criminals to hide behind women and children, does that mean you should kill them"

First, I'm an atheist American, not a Jew. Second, the God of the bible is a genocidal maniac, so don't even bring Him into the discussion.

Third -- how do you suggest that the IDF fight a war against an enemy that hides among civilians without killing any civilians?

I'm serious here, I'd like you to think about this. If you know a Hezbollah rocket site is located in a house, and it's firing rockets into your country, what do you do? Take it out, and possibly kill civilians, or let it keep firing, and kill YOUR civilians?

This is the dilemna that the IDF faces whenver it fights Arabs. This is the dilemna the US military faces in Iraq. Hezbollah or al-Qaeda or Sunni insurgents or the Taliban or Hamas, they ALL hide behind their women and children. Have you seen the pictures of Hamas fighters in Gaza surrounded by children?

Take a look:

How are you supposed to fight the guy with assault rifle without endangering the children he's surrounded by?

And you get mad at the IDF, but not the medieval thugs who willingly put their own civilians in harm's way?

None.

You know how many American civilians Imperial Japan killed? A few dozen. And America still used nuclear weapons against Japanese cities.

What do those numbers mean? Just because you are shitty at war doesn't make you right. Just because you keep starting wars you can't win doesn't make you brave.

That typical arab mentality Lebanon suffers from is going to cost what's left of your country big time.

Why has Lebanon not uprooted Hizbollah in the past years? The answer is very complicated, granted, but one has to make choices: do we live with terrorists? or do we eliminate them? No amount of negotiating is going to do any good with people who believe that Israel ought to be destroyed. My prayers are with all the many non-combatant Lebanese; but I agree with the commenters supra who have remarked that when war is necessary (i.e. when the one party is incapable of negotiating and is intent on violence, even to the point of putting its forces intentionally in close proximity to non-combatants), it is better that the party of violence die, even forty thousand people, so that the millions can live in peace. Someone upthread 'didn't want to get into Hitler, the Nazis etc': that is simply not acceptable, particularly in this case.

IDF warns Lebanon not to fire at army
By YAAKOV KATZ

A day after the Lebanese army fired at an Israeli AIRCRAFT on Friday, the IDF sent a severe warning to the Lebanese army.

The warning stated that Israel had thus far refrained from firing at Lebanese army positions, but should the Lebanese army continue firing at the IDF, the situation would change.

The aircraft was not damaged in the incident.

it wouldn't be censorship, since it would just be moving posts around... i don't know if there's a way to do that in blogger.

or make everyone log in to post. maybe if people had to actually be de-anonymized they would slow down a little bit before showing off the absolute worst in them?

Doha,

First and formost, congratulations on your heartfelt posts and for maintaining this forum during these difficult times.

After listening to PM siniora tonight, I can honestly say that I love the man! He is classy, elegant, smart, and most of all genuine. As much as I despise Hizbollah and would love for them to just GO THE HELL AWAY, right now we need to be united---against the unjustified Israeli aggression. Tonight, I do not despise Emile Lahoud, and I will refrain from mocking him (and for those who know me...thats a collossal sacrifice I am making). Instead, tonight, I am a Lebanese eager to stand side by side with all other Lebanese, no matter how 'Pro-Syrian' they may be. Mr. Olmert, Hassan Nasrallah was right...you are an idiot. Your miscalculation that by bombing all of Lebanon you would cause us to mobilize against Hizballah is an idiotic notion. Your inexperience is clear to me now. Israelis deserve a much wiser leader.

Hi all, I have a real question here.

What is the purpose of the protest in front of the Israeli embassy

Why not protest in front of the Syrian embassies around the world?
Or the Iranian embassies?

Syria and Iran pushed your country into attacking Israel and you are paying the price. It might suck for you but Israel won't ever put your lives before protecting its citizens from Lebanese attacks and provocation.

It's not that the Syrian Army is equal in force to the IDF, but perhaps the IDF should hit those behind Hizbullah, not the Lebanese people.

actually, according to CNN, the benevolent israelis dropped leaflets in a southern village stating (pretty much what you said - coincidence?)...

“is hezbollah helping the situation of lebanon?
hezbollah is damaging lebanon!” sporting a graphic of the head of hezbollah as a serpent.

The Irano-Syrian strategy, especially since Ahmadinejad's decision to make the destruction of the Jewish state a priority of his administration, would encourage those in Israel who insist that it should seize the current opportunity for breaking the Hezbollah's war machine even in the face of a broader war. In doing so Israel could claim that it was simply helping Lebanon implement Resolution 1559.

The stakes have been raised beyond anyone's expectation.

If Israel backs down now and ends its campaign without disarming the Hezbollah it would, in effect, hand Iran and Syria an unexpected victory. This would also spell the end of Lebanon's new democratic government and the return in force of Syrian and Iranian influence in Lebanon. At the other end of the spectrum in Palestine, such an Israeli retreat would give a badly hurt Hamas a second lease of life and greater vigour to pursue its radical strategy. If, on the other hand, Israel removes the Hezbollah from the Lebanese scene it would be the turn of the leaderships in Tehran and Damascus to come to terms with a major strategic setback that could encourage their internal enemies. What is certain is that this conflict will not end until one side wins and another side loses. The G-8 may try to postpone decision-time for a bit longer. But it is hard not to see that there are two visions of the Middle East, one backed by the United States and its allies, including Israel, the other promoted by Iran and Syria and their surrogates.

Since a synthesis of the two is not possible, even the G-8 may realise that they cannot prevent a broader regional war.

To all Israelis on this blog:

Please, please, please: I urge you to demonstrate against the war in Lebanon. It does not serve any purpose but prolonging the violence and the hatred that has existed between our countries for too long.

I hesitate to post this, but...
These are the victims of this war. These are villagers warned to leave their homes by the IDF. They were killed today while trying to flee north by a direct hit.

100+ dead so far. I do not want anymore of this. I do not want it for me and I do not want it for you. And I do not want it for our children.

Details of the demo from a fellow blogger:
We'll meet at 19:00 on the corner of Frishmann and Chen Blvd.
Those who can help making signs should come as of 16:00 to "haGada haSmalit", 70 Ahad Ha'am St.
For more information: 050-7425484 / 050-6230249.
Details concerning transportation from other cities will appear later on.

could you paste details of the demo on the main page? Israeli public opinion is the only thing that can influence the Israeli government.

What emotion should we have when we see our children slaughtered? same as you. Israelis profess to hate killing civilian yet they recklessly slaughter. this will help bring peace? it is very difficult not to hate, i pray for the strength not to despise all of israel.

Sorry to bother you all. This is my first ever blog. I need to get to Beirut ... to see someone important, and because it is a city I love. My MEA ticket is waste-paper. But can I get down from the north, from Latikia to Beirut? Are there still buses running .. or at least the odd service? Not leaving for a week or so, so things may change, but it would be useful to know how things stand now.

Oh and btw .. thanks to you all for being here. I need to know what is going on.

Stop arguing over save a Lebanese civilian petition and a save the Israeli civilians petition. What's needed is a "Save the Civilians" petition.

I have little to add right now about the ongoing tragedy, but I will say two things about the public reasons for Hizbullah’s actions on Wed.

I don’t think that the scale of Israel’s assault is justified, but I can’t stand HA either.

Re: Lebanese Prisoners in Israeli Jails

Nasrallah wants Samir Kuntar to be released. While there might be some Lebanese prisoners in Israeli jails who ought to be freed, Samir Kuntar is not one of them. In 1979 he murdered, point blank, three members of an Israeli family (plus a policeman). He invaded their apartment, looked them in the faces, and killed them. He killed the little girl by forcing a rifle butt into her skull.

Re: Getting Lebanese Released

Nasrallah rhetorically asked “if anyone knows a better way to , I’d like to hear it.”

Actually there is. In mid-2005 Israel released over 20 Jordanian prisoners, some of whom had committed deeds similar to Kuntar’s.

in response to the slate article:

Lee Smith (the author of the article) has always framed his arguments in this way:

"Maybe she will go home with him, assuming he has his own place, and give herself to him for the first time. Or maybe she already has. Regardless, I bet that come morning, she, like every other unmarried Lebanese woman, will rise early to hurry home before her parents wake, lest she scandalize them, their family, and neighbors. ... "

and I have always objected to it -- it's a sort of create-grand-situation-from-clever-insight tactic that only 1) consistently reinforces incorrect ideas of the region and 2) always forms his arguement on a precarious (but stable-seeming) balance point of "An Observation." He wrote an article about the townhouse gallery in cairo once (i think he might have even been staying at our house) where "all egyptian artists" were abstracted from a scene of three guys sitting around making bad art from cigarette boxes... so condescending.

israel's actions stand alone, and are the responsibility of israel alone - regardless of whoever it feels like blaming. i don't understand why israelis and israeli apologists feel comfortable coming here, after the havoc israel's wreaked on the sovereign nation of lebanon, to insist lebanese - still very much being injured by you - to acknowledge the significance of your own citizens' pain. have some respect - and if you don't - why not go somewhere where people support your aggression?

my family is ok, but i am not lebanese... although i have been talked to as "my kind" and called a "snake" and a "pig" and a "donkey" and an "islamofascist" because of hateful peoples' assumptions. what hate there is.

in addition for my heart bleeding for lebanon, i am against the policy of preemption. i am also against US aggression in the world - and i see this as a definite upscale of it. we in the US are taught that jews=persecuted people - tread lightly and ask no questions. what a shock it was to increasingly learn of israel's systematic, long-term domination and oppression of palestinians. but this action against lebanon tipped the scale - and now i'm learning of their long-term harrassment of lebanese; its disrespect of lebanon's borders (it seems israel disrespects any arab border); and its propaganda-backed villianization campaign re: hezbollah.

i feel we can't afford to allow the israeli/us-backed propaganda machine to work here - people in the US have been drawn to this site to learn about new events in lebanon, and it seems important to me to fight the hype.

thanks for your comment! :)

The israelis think they have right to break international law and ignore international human rights. Any nation or person that opposes their actions are quickly tagged as a Nazi Sympathiser - which is pure bullshit. It's disgusting to watch Israel oppressing and crushing their neighbours decade after decade... and lets face it the only reason they doing this is to enlarge the jewish state. They can do what they want because the US has given them a licence to bully and kill they neighbours at will. The so called western 'War On Terror' has been embraced by Israel to terrorize it's own neighbours. It's disgusting and people in the EU are sick and tired of Israel making the Middle East into the unstable enviromnent it has become.

I pray for victory over Hezbollah. If Israel doesn't destroy Hezbollah, nobody will, you obviously can't or won't. It is a shame Lebanon may have to be destroyed in the process. Hezbollah has declared war on Isreal. Israel has declared war on Hezbollah, and unfortunately the country that harbors them will be harmed. There will be civilian casulities on both sides but it can not stop until somebody is victorious. I honestly believe that if Israel pulls out now Hezbollah will gain strength. Iran will send more troops into Lebanon and Islamic law will tighten on Lebanon like a noose. I think if Hezbollah wins, Iran will rebuild your country and sieze more power in your government. If Israel wins we should help rebuild your country and we don't want to run your government. To me, an Israeli victory seem the better. Do you honestly think that if Israel stopped now Hezbollah would not scream victory and get even more support for beating back the Israeli invasion?

But of course this is not a valid point on this blog right? It is not even worthy of discussion. It is just propaganda right?

Sub rose,

There is no way the IDF can extricate Hizbllah from Lebanon in a short time. If this is the goal, then this is going to end up to be a bloody and protracted conflict. If the conflict goes on for too long, then the seething tensions inside Lebanon will most probably explode into a civil war (again).

Please understand that Hezbollah will grow stronger in a civil war. They have an excuse to keep their weapons and solidify themselves as the real authority when the central government collapses, as it normally does in a civil war. It is only peace that will disarm them.
Having said that, what on earth does bombing a van loaded with refugees have to do with extricating Hezbollah? Violence breeds more violence. Why is this so difficult to understand?

yes, you are right. this is not a valid point on this blog, asshole. this is not a valid attitude in a civilized society. your statement seems so - flippant, and yet, loaded in it, is the destruction of a country that doesn't even affect you. i don't know if you recognized the title - it's "lebanese bloggers." if you don't support the lebanese, maybe you should go somewhere else to talk about how lebanon might need to be destroyed, and what-not.

or let me just tell you about the angel israel. halo and all, around november 25, 2005, an israeli found themselves over the border in lebanon. "a civilian" - yeah, right. this AFTER israeli planes had decided lebanon was their place to drop leaflets of propaganda re: hezbollah. not for nothing, hezbollah are lebanese... but tough shit, b/c israel doesn't like 'em, so they harrass them at the lebanese border. the story continues.

israel - you don't have a leg to stand on, and nothing you say will change my mind - so save your breath.

49. technology is amazing
In times past, you had to wait for news of the war to come from runners and the rumor mill. The telegraph meant you could hear of events within 24 hours, though confusion could still delay the full telling of events. With Vietnam the war was in our living rooms every night. CNN brought the Gulf War to us in real time. But up until now, all of those advances still required news gatering and distribution organizations, very expensive, and also very easy to filter. Now we're getting the equivalent of the Civil War letters and pub fights in realtime. We're watching people on both sides of the fight yelling at each other.

I thought it was trippy enough when I was reading the snarking on the CNN talkbacks when the US started bombing in the Balkan war back in '99. We've got people practically blogging from the foxholes right now. Astounding.

thread title: Lebanese bloggers: "incendiary bombs on villages", "Massacre in Tyre"

I believe this terrible bombing is a deliberate incitement to a wider war. How much of this - with the supine complicity, even congratulations - of the US government, will be tolerated by the other nations of the world before they enter the fight? Oh, I do believe there are monsters who WANT Syria and Iran to attack so that they can "justify" the wider war they want.
