The Merry Minuet The Kingston Trio Words and Music by Sheldon Harnick
-From their 1959 LP "From the Hungry"
They're rioting in Africa (whistling) They're starving in Spain (whistling) There's hurricanes in Flo-ri-da (whistling) And Texas needs rain The whole world is festering with unhappy souls The French hate the Germans, the Germans hate the Poles Italians hate Yugoslavs, South Africans hate the Dutch AND I DON'T LIKE ANYBODY VERY MUCH!!
But we can be tranquil and thankful and proud For man's been endowed with a mushroom-shaped cloud And we know for certain that some lovely day Someone will set the spark off AND WE WILL ALL BE BLOWN AWAY!!
They're rioting in Africa (whistling) There's strife in Iran What nature doesn't so to us Will be done by our fellow man.
Too late to edit. I guess I just assumed the I was there as I knew the album well.
I am going to check Amazon to see if it is available. I downloaded an album from emusic tonight to make hubby a cd....but is not the original songs from the hungry i.
15. Its hard to admit but I'm old enough too. Geez, you'd think
we would have learned a little since them. Guess 1960 is not that far behind us. Forty five years must not be long enough to realize that war is wrong and that we can indeed blow ourselves away.
When I was in college, The Kingston Trio was the only music that was ever played. I knew the words to everyone of their songs. I have seen them several times in the past few years (only one original left and not sure if he is even still with the group.) My favorite album by the Kingston Trio is still "From the Hungry I." The Merry Minuet is on that album. The words to that song are sure prophetic today, aren't they?
I frequented the Troubador in Los Angeles in the 60's and caught the Kingston Trio every time they were in town. Either it was because I was younger that things seemed 'bad' but not 'dire' - or age has taken some of the bloom off my optimism. I just never felt as angry or dispairing as I have during the * years.
