I just saw again the clip of Steffie's lapdog interview with Condi Rice. She claimed that any attempt to link our Iraqi policies to increased violence in the muddle east "grotesque". The way she used that word suggests that her staff searched, weighed and selected that one word. It almost seemed as though she practiced it to get the tone right. It almost worked. She did not seem as immature and petulant as she normally does.
I'll say this for Condi - she has a natural knack for certain things. The way she reacts to criticism or pointed questions is extremely telling. I'd love to see a psychological profile on her. I am particularly struck by the way her policy and routine administrative failures are almost completely masked by the more catastrophic diplomatic failures. That takes true talent.
I have often thought that our country would be in much finer shape if we had done precisely the opposite of what George Bush wanted to do - on every issue, from the most mundane to the most complex. I no longer think that way. I have refined that opinion to include Condi Rice. If there were a diplomatic meeting, a policy statement, or a need for a decision by the secretary of state, I now believe that we should do everything exactly opposite of what she believes, says or does.
