why would H&R Block contribute to republicans?
Their donations per buyblue.org run 44% repuke and 56% democrat but why would they give anything to republicans? Repubs want to do away with income tax! Why would you contribute to a party that wants to do away with your entire industry?!?! I can’t for the life of me imagine the reasoning behind this. In addition to that, republicans briefly tried earlier this year to get rid of EIC which accounts for half or more of Block’s business. Do I just not get it?

1. Abolishing the income tax is another one of those Repuke pipe dreams.
Like banning abortion. Sure, they'll talk the talk, because it always gets them votes.

But what if the Repukes finally achieve those goals? Those people are heavy single-issue voters. Their single issue will be gone - and with it, potentially the reason they go out to the polls and vote Repuke.

I think the Repuke party just strings most of its single-issue groups along like that, so they can be sure to have that voting bloc.

2. Because Rs keep them in business. They create many
tax loopholes for their rich constituents and for businesses. This is their bread and butter. If the tax codes were so simple that report forms could be completed in less than a page for everyone, then the Block would no longer have a reason to exist.

5. They don't do any corporate taxes
I'd have to guess that most of the credits that keep Block in business are democratic creations - EIC, Child care credit, education credit, savers credit, Child tax credit

To me, this is like Budweiser donating to the prohibition party

3. I grew up with the Bloch kids
Yes, they spell their name BlocH. Company name ends with a K.

They are good people. They have done a lot for our community. This is sad to see.

4. Well, income tax is one thing; corporate taxes, VAT and so forth another
Plus, they are international now, not just a US company. And they have other accounting services besides the well known income tax racket.

If you do not give the GOP dough, they shut you out. Gotta keep those eggs in more than one basket.

6. a general BuyBlue / donation observation...
I have not researched this extensively, but I've noticed that companies that are headquartered in blue states donate more to dems and the trend is the same toward companies in red states donating to pugs.

If my observation is overly simplistic or just plain wrong, correct me.

Otherwise, what would possible explanations for this be? Local / state tax implications? State labor laws? Why would that alone tip the scales for businesses that sell product and possibly have remote offices nationwide or worldwide?

Maybe it's just easier to buy your local senator / rep because you have "been doing business" with him / her for so long?
