Good advice: A Doctor Takes Vitamins
The Wall Street Journal

January 18, 2006

TRICKS OF THE TRADE

A Doctor Takes Vitamins
January 18, 2006; Page D1

After taking his daily multivitamin, John Swartzberg waits at least two hours before taking any other medications. That's because multivitamin pills usually contain calcium, which can interfere with the absorption of a prescription drug.

Dr. Swartzberg, editor of the University of California, Berkeley, Wellness letter (a monthly publication that advises people on diet and nutrition) buys the cheapest generic multivitamins available. He checks the bottle to see whether the U.S. Pharmacopeia has approved the multivitamin. USP is a nonprofit group that verifies drugs and dietary supplements.

Dr. Swartzberg, 60 years old, began taking a daily multivitamin two years ago because there is evidence to suggest that, as people age, their ability to absorb vitamins from food is impaired.

He keeps his multivitamins in his kitchen cabinet rather than the medicine cabinet because drugs degrade more quickly if exposed to moisture.

1. My oncologist recommended a plain multivitamin.
He would agree with all this.

4. Is it possible that taking vits by pill diminishes the ability of the body
to absorb vitamins from the food? It could be our taking of vitamins by pill instead of through the foods we eat or through fortified versions of the foods we eat actually diminishes the body's ability to extract the vitamins directly from food.

6. the air we breathe
nutrients are depleted by pollution too. We are actually in a state of accelerated aging if we do not supplement. Our bodies use up certain nutrients to fight off foreign invaders - most people do not realize that their air fresheners, perfumes, formaldehyde in clothing and building materials, neurotoxins in pesticides, cleaning products and building materials etc supply us with a constant source of foreign invaders.

7. I agree, years ago I read up on what is in cosmetics and toiletries and
the effect they have, I gave up all toiletries and cosmetics since then. Natural soap and water and moisturizer.
Petroleum based moisturizers don't even get into our skin they irrritate and kill the skin and IMHO probably let alot of that smog and pollution into our systems not to mention the formaldehydes etc that we absorb.
