Lieberman Plans for Loss Next Week
Lieberman Plans for Loss Next Week

Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) will shake up his campaign staff if he loses Tuesday’s Democratic primary to challenger Ned Lamont. Lieberman supporters have watched with growing dismay since the spring as the three term senator’s campaign has gone from oblivious to defensive. They expect to reap a bitter harvest in 6 days.

Expect Lieberman to can anyone who was associated with 2004 Kerry campaign and replace them with a team of pungent veterans who will take the fight to Lamont. As Lieberman tours the broiling state, you can almost hear the gloves coming off in preparation for a fight to the finish in November.

Lieberman will face pressure to abandon his independent run if he gets clocked on August 8th. But on August 9th he will be able to capture the spotlight by filing his petitions for his independent run.

6. He's done just about everything to insure it.
Not even Big Dawg and Boxer could help him. I disagree with Lieberman on many issues, but I don't dislike the man. However, he's been arrogant and stupid. The electorate has totally abandoned him because of this. Now, everything he says and does pisses them all off more.

The Young Republicans are backing him, which is going to achieve exactly the opposite of what they desire. It will drive even more Democrats into Lamont's camp.

Ned Lamont is going to be Connecticutt's next Senator. If Lamont wins the primary, which is looking very likely, he'll be swept into office in November.

8. But the young republicans can't help in on Aug. 8
Unless they changed parties to vote for him (it's a closed primary)

They would have had to no later than May 8...at which time the Lieberman camp was still not worrying.

But what great love Connecticut Democrats will heap on Lieberman knowing that the Republicans are actively supporting him. What an opportunity this affords Lamont. If I were Ned, I'd be saying publically that the Repugs want Lieberman reelected.

12. Someone said that is probably the deal that BC made with Joe
That he would try to help him but if he lost he must slink away. Will probably get a cabinet position if there is ever a Dem Executive again.

11. It was my understanding,
That Joe made a deal with Clinton. The deal was this, if Bill would come to Conn and campaign for Joe, Joe promised not to run as an indie if he lost the primary.

I obviously have no idea if this deal actually took place, but i read this somewhere and it makes sense. Why else would Clinton put himself in a position of campaigning for Joe, if he didn't have a deal on the side.

16. I heard that too on the news.
I suspect several prominent Democrats, including Clinton will put the pressure on him to not run an Indy campaign. Of course, that doesn't mean he will pay attention to them. By the way he's been acting lately it wouldn't surprise me if he told them all to go to hell and ran as an Indy.

19. but then joe could run as a republican, right?
besides, if he changed to independent, what would he owe Clinton anyways?
seems like another one sided deal, like the gang of 14, to me.

I don't see him fading away, not with that large of a sense of entitlement.

17. This Lamont thing reminds me of another insurgent campaign in CT
in which Sen. Lowell Weicker (R-But Walked Upright) was up against the underdog Attorney General of CT. Starting from far behind, the AG drew even in the polls, and his supporters started wearing "Dead Heat" buttons all over the place. Eventually he prevailed, and was elected to the Senate --

-- where he remains today, for the time being, as that underdog insurgent was none other than Joe Lieberman himself. My, how time flies...

From an email to Princeton Republicans shown at link above:

Republicans interested in campaigning for Lieberman in the Democratic Primary will have lodging accommodations paid for (by his campaign), as well as food and transportation.

Edit to add: This is absolutely outrageous and begs the question of what Lieberman would owe the Republicans (beyond bus fare, food and lodging) if he wins (as unlikely as that seems now).

33. Either way, we win
But it is right that the Dems hold Joe's feet to the fire for his sucking up to fascism. On the whole, he's a pretty good senator and on most issues is pretty mainstream liberal.
