What's to keep the Puggies from forcing elections on "their" equipment? "Who cares what we think?"

issue and this story.

Why?

Because many have been coopted into 2008 campaigns that want the issues shifted to the centrist approach, and they NEED the perception that Democrats lost in 2002 and 2004.

How will strategists make their mortgage payments if it turns out that all Dems needed were the votes counted honestly?

Look at the stir they caused over Pt9-11 - imagine that same level of outrage directed at the machine fraud and the pressure applied to the corpmedia to REPORT it.

6. I Have NO....ZERO ZERO ZERO Faith In The Media To Really Report This
They could find evidence that the 2004 election was fixed, and it would get a page 30 mention in the paper. The media is NOT on our side, save for the odd exception like Keith, or are not given enough power to do anything significant. Oh, I LOVE Keith, but he can't do it by himself, and 1 hour per day is not enough to influence the MORONS that make up almost 1/3rd of our country.

Princeton Professor Hacks Voting Machines

POSTED: 12:37 am CDT September 14, 2006

TRENTON, N.J. -- A Princeton computer science professor said electronic voting machines made by a company based in Ohio are vulnerable to hacking.

Edward Felten and two students have released a paper on the school's Web site that says they tested a Diebold voting machine. They found ways to quickly upload malicious programs and developed a computer virus able to attack the machines.

A Diebold spokesman said Felten ignored newer software and security measures that prevent such hacking.

The Diebold machine tested by Felten is used across the country along with a newer model.

The professor said better software and voter receipts could help solve the problems.

Princeton Professor Hacks Electronic Voting Machine
By CHRIS NEWMARKER, AP

Steve Nesius, AP
A Diebold Election Systems electronic voting machine is tested in Jackson, Miss. in June.

TRENTON, N.J. (Sept. 14) - A Princeton University computer science professor added new fuel Wednesday to claims that electronic voting machines used across much of the country are vulnerable to hacking that could alter vote totals or disable machines.

In a paper posted on the university's Web site, Edward Felten and two graduate students described how they had tested a Diebold AccuVote-TS machine they obtained, found ways to quickly upload malicious programs and even developed a computer virus able to spread such programs between machines.

<snip>

The machine Felten tested, obtained in May from an undisclosed source, was the same type used across Maryland in its primary election Tuesday, according to Ross Goldstein, a deputy administrator with the state's Board of Elections. Goldstein said he couldn't comment on the report until he read it.

<snip>

Previous studies have claimed hacking vulnerabilities with the machines. But Felten claims his study is the first time that an independent research group has obtained an actual machine and tested it extensively.

Felten and graduate students Ariel Feldman and Alex Halderman found that malicious programs could be placed on the Diebold by accessing the memory card slot and power button, both behind a locked door on the side of the machine. One member of the group was able to pick the lock in 10 seconds, and software could be installed in less than a minute, according to the report.

The researchers say they designed software capable of modifying all records, audit logs and counters kept by the voting machine, ensuring that a careful forensic examination would find nothing wrong.

The programs were able to modify vote totals or cause machines to break down, something that could alter the course of an election if machines were located in crucial polling stations.

It was also possible to design a computer virus to spread malicious programs to multiple machines by piggybacking on a new software download or an election information file being transferred from machine to machine, Felten said.

"I think there are many people out there who have the type of technical ability to carry out the sort of attacks we describe here," he said.

78. Columbus Dispatch yesterday (different study)
Cleveland study questions accuracy of Diebold voting machines
By Mark Niquette and Joe Hallett
The Columbus Dispatch
Wednesday, August 16, 2006 1:11 AM
A new study raises serious questions about whether Diebold touch-screen voting devices used in more than half of Ohio's counties produce accurate results, but Diebold insists the machines can be trusted and that the study is flawed.

A three-month review of Diebold electronic voting machines used in Cuyahoga County during the May primary concluded that the votes recorded electronically and on paper receipts did not always match.

“(T)he election system, in its entirety, exhibits shortcomings with extremely serious consequences, especially in the event of a close election,” concludes the study, released yesterday by Election Science Institute of San Francisco, Calif., or ESI.

“These shortcomings merit urgent attention. Relying on this system in its present state should be viewed as a calculated risk,” the study said.

Steven Hertzberg, ESI's founder, said last night researchers can't yet explain the discrepancies and that more study should be done among researchers, Diebold and election officials.

“We need to understand much better why this occurred, whether it was human error, machine error or a combination of both,” he said.

92. we should have the right to demand paper ballots
these machines have no paper trails. When I moved to Nevada, I thought the machines were papered-and for the local election they used the papered machines, but when the presidential election came, half were papered and half were not. My in-laws, at their precinct had to vote on a non-papered machine as there were only two papered machine-one broke down and there was a large line at the other one. It was bad enough that voter registrations were destroyed, and those whose registrations were destroyed were not allowed to re-register, per a determination by a judge (thus depriving them of voting rights), but we also had the non-papered machines rolled out. Nevada was a swing state in the last election and the dirty, unethical tricks were unbelievable!!!!

"If someone tries to tamper with the cards, it will be immediately recognized," he said.

That said, a Princeton University computer science professor yesterday posted a paper on a school Web site describing how he and two graduate students were able to quickly upload malicious programs onto a Diebold AccuVote-TS - the same model used in Anne Arundel County. Edward Felten said they even developed a computer virus able to spread such programs between machines.

It's official. Diebold is fundamentally broken.
Yesterday, Princeton researchers released the results of their investigations into a Diebold "accuvote" machine. They had a press release and everything. I'm guessing you didn't hear about it on the news. So, presented for your democratic (that's with a little-d) pleasure:

DailyKos has the story (Shame on you, Traditional Media, for ignoring this story!)

And YouTube has the researchers' demo.

Read the story. Or just watch the video. If you give a damn (or even some small portion of a damn, howevermuch that works out to be) about how this nation is run, on behalf of yourself or your children or whomever, both should set off deeply distressing alarm bells for you.

Now then, if you haven't gone and registered to vote absentee, what are you waiting for?
