Watching my TIVO'd Countdown, with tears in my eyes....
When Turley said that we may find out.. that our president ordered our soldiers to commit torture I just lost it.

How is it possible that we've fallen so far? How is this America?

5. Domestic immunity never worked for tinhorn dictators; won't work for Bush
Congress should not attempt to provide domestic immunity for criminal violations of rights and protections contained in the Geneva Conventions, Article 3. And Article 3 incorporates by reference the INternational Covenant on Civil and Political rights (a treaty to which the US is signatory), and which reflects what the international community recognizes as a set of minimum due process guarantees under customary human rights law that must be complied with.

Tin-horn dictatorships attempt such form of impunity but the attempt itself violates several treaties of the US and, as Marcos, Milsevic, Noriega, Pinochet, various Argentinian generals and others have learned, have no legal effect abroad in foreign or international fora (can you say World Court War Crimes Tribunal?) And if the Congress votes in any manner to legitimize Bush's torture, those who voted for it will also be war criminals.

The Congress should protect what's left of the tattered honor of the United States and maintain the rule of law.

6. Wondering if it's one reason to cut vet's care too.
Don't want anybody getting therapy, that might out some nasty truths about torture.

2. the torture is apparently affecting the soldiers as well
Edited on Wed Sep-20-06 07:26 AM by leftchick
I read "American Gulag" in Harpers and one ex-detainee (who was tortured) felt bad for his US guards. He said they are suffering for what they are doing. This is so horrible for all of humankind.

4. Listening to Randi Rhodes last night...
she was reading the transcript describing some of the things our soldiers allegedly did to some prisoners. It was beyond belief. I said to myself, "That can't possibly be true"

Then I remembered the photographs. Yes, horrible as it is, it can be true.

We have fallen. This country is well along the road to becoming the very worst of what we condemn in brutal regimes around the world.

ALL BECAUSE OF GEORGE BUSH.
