John Paul II thought Shrub was the Antichrist???
I was just driving into work listening to Stephanie Miller and the guys segued from Hugo Chavez "Arbusto=El Diablo" remarks to a couple of comments about how "the previous Pope" thought Bush was the Antichrist "according to some people on the inside". Were they making a joke, or has anyone who follows the papacy more closely than I tend to heard anything about this? If this is so, I may have to revise my opinion of the man upward a bit.

4. There's an urban legend behind Paul and Bush
It basically says that he privately wished that he was younger to confront Bush because the legend goes he had a suspicion that he was the Anti-Christ. Of course, he died before seeing what Bush really is, but supposedly he did tell Bush that if he invaded Iraq, he would invade alone. In other words, if he invaded, he would go without God.

5. IIRC, There were a few references to this story a few years ago, but
....the original source of the account leaves a lot to be desired as credibility goes (ie., the original source is Wayne Madsen using unnamed sources...).

WASHINGTON DC -- According to freelance journalist Wayne Madsden, "George W Bush's blood lust, his repeated commitment to Christian beliefs and his constant references to 'evil doers,' in the eyes of many devout Catholic leaders, bear all the hallmarks of the one warned about in the Book of Revelations--the anti-Christ."

Madsen, a Washington-based writer and columnist, who often writes for Counterpunch, says that people close to the pope claim that amid these concerns, the pontiff wishes he was younger and in better health to confront the possibility that Bush may represent the person prophesized in Revelations. John Paul II has always believed the world was on the precipice of the final confrontation between Good and Evil as foretold in the New Testament.

At the time, I filed this story in that category of things that 'while factually incorrect, are still 'true' nonetheless..."

6. the pope did publicly say before the invasion and occupation of iraq,
when bush was saber rattling and the pope was saying no to the invasion and occupation of iraq, that he, george w. bush, alone, would be responsible for derailing the course of humanity.
