SANTA CRUZ
Big light show -- art for peace
500 flashlights to be turned on at once, aimed toward sky

Steve Rubenstein, Chronicle Staff Writer

Thursday, September 21, 2006
Something important is going to happen in Santa Cruz tonight, involving the Pacific Coast and 500 giant flashlights.

It's art, which means that it's going to be even more important than 500 flashlights usually are.

"No one has ever done something like this before,'' said the artist, a 50-year-old former bike messenger named Kirby Scudder. "Maybe I'm going to find out why. I think it takes major idiocy to do something like this.''

What Scudder plans to do is to position a battery-powered light roughly the size of a car headlight every 30 feet along West Cliff Drive overlooking the sea, point them all straight up, have volunteers turn them all on at 9 p.m. and see what happens. The lights will stay on until the batteries run out.

It's International Peace Day, and the flashlights are supposed to be one of those light-a-candle-instead-of-curse-the-darkness deals, Scudder said.

"I don't think this is going to change the geopolitical landscape,'' Scudder said. "Part of the human condition is to be in conflict.

"But it's a start.''
