That Deborah Howell is such a delicate flower

The Unsoiled Ears of Deborah Howell

Simple obscenity is not the same as invective and invective is not the same as sexist personal attacks. But, of course, since we haven't really seen the offending emails/comments/whatever we still don't know exactly what got their knickers in a twist.

From 1992 National Pres Club interview:

When I was twelve years old, we were going to this Baptist church in San Antonio. I was listening to this preacher, and he said something about Mary, "the so-called queen of heaven by the Catholics." It was very anti-Catholic. I listened and I said a twelve-year-old's version of, "What is this shit?"

...

She was a wonderful mother in the sense that she was a great stay-at-home mother. She was very supportive of me. I remember her spanking me as a child and the usual kinds of things. The only time I ever remember her giving me a total and complete batch of shit was when I lied to her about smoking, and she knew better.

...

Howell: "Adios, mother fucker." I didn't. I said, "See ya." And I walked out, and I started to work on the Corpus Christi Caller-Times in two weeks. I only had to work five days a week, too, but I had split days off and split shifts. I'd come to work at 5:45 in the morning, work till noon, go home, and come back and work three to six. It was just screwy. And I liked it, and I had a good time.

...

3. I scanned it all. What am I missing? The hypocrisy? -->
"It's all an informality, but the rules of the office are much more formal now than they were when I was growing up in the newspaper business."

5. It's unbelievably telling. The person who wrote the
"I have a contract, you evil posters" column and the person in those passages are not the same person, are they?

:)

6. I notice she is a liberal user of the dreaded "c" word too.......

I suspect she is a just substandard employee and has a problem taking criticism or correction from superiors. I do sense an out of proportion ego of her own self worth.

7. Oh the vulgarity!!! I'm shocked, shocked.
(Fanning self in righteous indignation.) Oh I should write a strongly worded letter to the Post complaining that they allow such an uncouth vulgarian to pollute their pages and my delicate, refined sensibilities with her gutter mind and even worse, a persistent aversion to getting her facts right.

Language and hypocrisy aside, Howell's repeatedly been proved fucking WRONG and yet she apparently continues to dig a hole and throws shit at those who dare criticize her. When some people demanded she be fired, she boasted that she had a contact. Ms. Howell, may I remind you...so did Judy Miller.
